The Main Families of Naruto Games

Most Naruto games fall into a handful of major fighting series. The most iconic one, Ultimate Ninja Storm, is developed by studio CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco; it faithfully follows the story of Naruto and Sasuke. Alongside it, there is the Nintendo branch (Clash of Ninja), online games and several mobile titles.

The PlayStation 2 Era: Ultimate Ninja

It all began in 2003 in Japan with Naruto: Ultimate Ninja (Japanese title Narutimate Hero), CyberConnect2's first fighting game on PlayStation 2. The series ran to five installments through 2007, including the Shippuden-era entries (Ultimate Ninja 4 and 5), the fifth of which was never released in North America (a PAL edition came out in Europe in 2009).

The Ultimate Ninja Storm Series

In 2008, CyberConnect2 launched the flagship high-definition series with Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm, at first exclusive to the PlayStation 3:

  • Ultimate Ninja Storm (2008) — first installment, PS3.
  • Storm 2 (2010) — first multiplatform release (PS3, Xbox 360).
  • Storm Generations (2012) — announced in 2011, but actually released in 2012.
  • Storm 3 (2013) — the Full Burst re-release added PC.
  • Storm Revolution (2014).
  • Storm 4 (2016), PS4/Xbox One/PC, rounded out by the expansion Road to Boruto in 2017.
  • Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections (November 17, 2023), released for the 20th anniversary and presented as the last installment in the Storm series.

Nintendo, Shinobi Striker and Mobile

Beyond the Storm games, the franchise explored other ground:

  • Clash of Ninja (Japanese Gekito Ninja Taisen!), a fighting series from studio Eighting launched in 2003 on GameCube, continued by Clash of Ninja Revolution on Wii. The publisher varies by region (Tomy in Japan, D3 Publisher in North America).
  • Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker (2018), a 4-vs-4 online multiplayer game developed by Soleil and published by Bandai Namco.
  • Mobile: Ultimate Ninja Blazing (2016, service shut down in 2021), Naruto x Boruto: Ninja Voltage (2017) and the MMORPG Naruto: Slugfest (2020).
