VillageAmegakure

It rains endlessly over Amegakure, and the rain is watching. A small isolationist village wedged between the great nations, it has served as the battlefield for other people's wars. Hanzo led it without ever being a Kage: the title of Amekage does not exist. Then comes Nagato, who becomes Pain and kills him, and Konan after him. This is where Yahiko founded the Akatsuki with the two of them, and where he impaled himself. As for the Land of Rain, the series never names it: the phrase comes from readers.

A village where it rains endlessly, crushed by other people's wars and turned into the birthplace of the Akatsuki. This is Amegakure.

A Village Crushed Between the Great Nations

Amegakure is a small industrial and isolationist village, wedged between several of the great nations — which turned it into the battlefield of their wars.

Its population is largely made up of refugees, and everything else follows from that: impenetrable defenses, distrust, and the dream of peace of three orphans. A useful point: the country that shelters it is never named in the series — “Land of Rain” is a name coined by readers.

Seen from behind, a man with long white hair stands in a few centimeters of water in the rain, facing a line of dark metal towers dotted with small lights
A village of steel turned in on itself: from serving as a battlefield for the great nations, Amegakure built itself into a fortress.

Hanzo, the Leader — Not a Kage

Hanzo the Salamander rules the village for many long years. Careful with the title: he is not a Kage, and “Amekage” does not exist.

Only the five great villages have a Kage; Hanzo is a village leader. He is the one who, during a war, dubs three Konoha ninja “the Sannin”.

Hanzo rules Amegakure for years without ever bearing a Kage title: he is its village leader.

The Orphans and the Akatsuki

The war leaves three orphans there — Nagato, Yahiko and Konan — whom Jiraiya takes in and trains.

It is Yahiko who founds the Akatsuki, with Nagato and Konan, to protect their country. The tragedy is often told wrong: during Hanzo's ambush, Nagato did not kill Yahiko — it was Yahiko who impaled himself on the kunai that Nagato was holding, to spare him that choice.

Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan as adults: it is Yahiko, in the center, who founds the Akatsuki to protect their country.

The Reign of Pain

Years later, Nagato leads a civil war, kills Hanzo in person, and establishes a theocracy: the village now worships a god named Pain.

Yahiko's body, for its part, becomes the Deva Path — the one that speaks. After Nagato, Konan leads the village in turn, briefly, before being killed by Tobi.

Nagato does not delegate the taking of the village: he strikes Hanzo down himself before installing the cult of Pain there.

The Rain That Watches

The endless rain is not just scenery: it is a sensor. The clouds are formed from Pain's chakra, and every drop is linked to his senses.

It signals that an intruder has entered — but does not locate him, hence the recourse to Konan. A telling detail: it stops when Pain is away. A village where even the weather belongs to its god.

FAQ

  • Is Amegakure one of the five great villages?
No. It is a small isolationist village, wedged between several of the great nations, which turned it into the battlefield of their wars — hence a population made up mostly of refugees. Everything else follows from that: its defenses, its distrust, and the dream of peace of its orphans.
  • Was Hanzo the Kage of Amegakure?
No, and it is a widespread mistake: “Amekage” does not exist. Only the leaders of the five great villages bear the title of Kage. Hanzo was the leader of the village, for many long years — he is also the one who dubbed the Sannin.
  • Who founded the Akatsuki?
Yahiko, with Nagato and Konan, in Amegakure, to protect their country. It is much later that the organization becomes what we know today. Careful with a point that is often told wrong: during Hanzo's ambush, Nagato did not kill Yahiko — it was Yahiko who impaled himself on the kunai that Nagato was holding, to spare him that choice.
  • Why does it rain nonstop in Amegakure?
Because the rain is a sensor. The clouds are formed from Pain's chakra, and every drop is linked to his senses: it signals to him that an intruder has entered the village. It does not locate him for all that, hence the recourse to Konan. It also stops when Pain is away.
  • Who leads the village after Hanzo?
Nagato, under the identity of Pain: he leads a civil war, kills Hanzo in person, and establishes a theocracy in which the village worships a god. After him, it is Konan who takes charge of the village, briefly, before being killed by Tobi.

In summary

Amegakure is the collateral victim of the ninja world: a nameless country, crushed by other people's wars, that ended up giving itself a god. The rain that falls there is the series' most beautiful symbol — a pain that never stops.
