Tailed BeastChomeiTakigakure

Six wings, a single real tail, and the only flying tailed beast. Chomei, the Seven-Tails (Nanabi) nicknamed Lucky Seven, takes the form of a dark blue rhinoceros beetle and covers his opponents in a blinding scale powder. The profile also introduces his jinchuriki, Fu of Takigakure, the only host to come from a village outside the Five Great Nations, and retraces the journey of the most cheerful of the nine tailed beasts, from the Akatsuki to the war.

The only tailed beast able to fly, and the most cheerful: meet Chomei, the "Lucky Seven", and his jinchuriki Fu. A profile of the seven-tailed beast.

A Giant Beetle

Chomei is the Nanabi (the "Seven-Tails"), one of the nine tailed beasts. His form is that of a gigantic rhinoceros beetle (kabutomushi), dark blue and armored. Notable detail: his "seven tails" are in fact six wing-shaped appendages plus a single real tail.

The Only Flying Tailed Beast

Chomei is presented as the only tailed beast able to fly; he can even give his host insect wings. His signature ability is the release of a scale powder that blinds, to which a defensive cocoon is added.

Fu, the Kunoichi of the Hidden Waterfall

Chomei's last known host is Fu, a kunoichi from Takigakure, the Hidden Waterfall Village. The pair is unique of its kind: no other tailed beast, no other jinchuriki comes from a village outside the Five Great Ninja Nations.

Fu is herself a figure apart among the bearers of tailed beasts: cheerful, eager for friendship, the opposite of the isolation and mistrust in which most of the other hosts grew up.

One of the Nine Tailed Beasts

Like his fellow beasts, Chomei was born from the division of the Ten-Tails' chakra by Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths, who gave each beast a name.

From the Akatsuki to the War

Chomei is torn from his host by the Akatsuki and sealed inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. The extraction kills Fu; the anime attributes the capture to Kakuzu and Hidan, while the manga does not show the captors.

The war briefly places him back inside his host, reanimated by Edo Tensei (Reanimation Jutsu), under Obito's control, against Naruto and Killer Bee. He comes out of it free, like the eight other tailed beasts.

The extraction of the tailed beast leaves its host no chance: Fu does not survive it.

"Lucky Seven," the Most Cheerful Tailed Beast

Chomei has a temperament that is playful, almost carefree, which he shares with his host. When he introduces himself to Naruto in the shared consciousness of the tailed beasts, he announces himself as "Lucky Seven Chomei": a nod to his seven tails and to the lucky number. He also slips the word lucky just about everywhere in his lines.

He is also the only tailed beast to have changed appearance permanently. At his creation, he was only a larva that was entirely green, with red eyes and seven real tails. The blue-armored adult, six of whose tails have become wings, is the product of an insect metamorphosis.

His arsenal is not limited to flight. He has an enormous chakra reserve that he can lend to others, and he knows how to form a Tailed Beast Bomb. He fights like an insect: biting, charging with his horn. His durability is considerable, to the point of withstanding being pinned to the ground by the Nine-Tails.

Once the war is over, he keeps his distance from humans. When Urashiki begins coveting the chakra of the tailed beasts and Naruto organizes a telepathic meeting, Chomei declines, along with Matatabi and Kokuo, for fear of being captured and used one more time — despite the trust he places in Naruto.
