Han: The Jinchuriki of the Five-Tails (Kokuo)

UniverseHan (Five-Tails jinchuriki)Iwagakure

Armored in scalding steam, he overpowers his opponents through sheer size alone. Han is the tallest of the nine jinchuriki, and one of the most mysterious. Host of the Five-Tails (Gobi) of Iwagakure, he crushes his opponents thanks to a back-mounted furnace that multiplies his strength. Two misconceptions fall along the way: Kokuo is a horse-dolphin hybrid, not a unicorn, and the steam comes from Boil Release, the kekkei genkai of the beast rather than of its host. Then there is his capture, never depicted, and his return, reanimated for the war.

The tallest of the jinchuriki, armored in scalding steam: Han overpowers his opponents with his sheer size and his furnace armor. Host of the Five-Tails of Iwagakure, he remains one of the most mysterious of the nine hosts.

The Host of the Five-Tails

Han (ハン) is a shinobi of Iwagakure and the jinchuriki of the Five-Tails (Gobi), named Kokuo. He is physically the tallest of all the jinchuriki: he stands taller than even Killer Bee by a head.

Like Roshi, he is from Iwagakure and will be reanimated at the same time as him during the war — hence the persistent confusion between the village's two hosts.

Six shinobi lined up in a rocky cavern in front of a masked figure in a dark cloak; one of them, in heavy red armor and a conical helmet, stands clearly taller than all the others.
Lined up with the other jinchuriki brought back for the war, Han is recognizable first of all by his height.

Kokuo, Horse-Dolphin (Not a Unicorn)

The beast sealed inside Han is Kokuo, the Five-Tails: a large body of a white horse topped with a dolphin's head. Kishimoto claims this crossbreed in his second artbook.

The trap is a classic one: this is not a unicorn. The rest — the five horns, the origin, the boiling chakra — comes down to Kokuo himself far more than to his host.

Kokuo combines a horse's body with a dolphin's head, and bears several horns — not a single one like a unicorn.

The Steam Armor

Han's distinctive feature is a heavy steam armor fitted with a back-mounted furnace, which stores and projects enormous amounts of scalding steam. It is worn equipment, not a bodily power.

His style rests on taijutsu: by adjusting the steam pressure, he multiplies his physical strength and the power of his blows — hence his reputation as a master of steam.

The armor is worn equipment: thick plates and a furnace that releases steam with every burst.

The Steam Question

Han's steam comes from Boil Release(Futton), which blends Fire and Water Release. This kekkei genkai is not his own: it belongs to Kokuo.

Han borrows it from the beast and channels it through his armor. Nothing in the canon makes him a personal user of Boil Release, independent of the Tailed Beast. The nuance is worth keeping.

A Capture Never Shown

Han is the only jinchuriki whose abduction is shown neither in the manga nor in the anime. We know that he dies before the Fourth Great Ninja War and that Kokuo is extracted from him, nothing more.

The story does not settle the order of the two events. Any capture scene, any battle, any precise dating is therefore pure invention: on this point, the canon is silent.

Reanimated for the War

Like the other deceased jinchuriki, Han is brought back by the Edo Tensei (Reanimation Jutsu) cast by Kabuto for the Fourth Great Ninja War.

On the second day of the conflict, Obito converts him into one of his "Paths": a Rinnegan in the left eye, a Sharingan in the right eye, the beast resealed inside him and a chakra receiver implanted.

Two mismatched eyes, one ringed with circles and the other marked in red: the signature of Obito's "Paths".

FAQ

  • Which tailed beast is Han the jinchuriki of, and which village is he from?
He is the jinchuriki of the Five-Tails (Gobi), named Kokuo, and he is a shinobi of Iwagakure, the Hidden Stone Village, in the Land of Earth.
  • Is Kokuo a unicorn?
No — that is the classic trap. Kokuo is a white creature blending a horse's body and a dolphin's head, with horns, pale hooves and pale tail tips. Kishimoto explicitly wanted a horse-dolphin mix, confirmed in his second artbook.
  • Does Han wield Boil Release (Futton) as a personal kekkei genkai?
It needs nuance. Boil Release (Fire + Water) is Kokuo's kekkei genkai. Han exploits this steam through his armor (back-mounted furnace) to multiply his strength and his taijutsu; the canon does not clearly make him a personal user of Boil Release independent of the Tailed Beast and of the armor.
  • How did Han die, and why does he reappear during the war?
The Akatsuki extracted the Five-Tails from him, which killed him — his abduction itself is never shown, neither in the manga nor in the anime. Kabuto then reanimates him with the Edo Tensei, and Obito turns him into one of his jinchuriki "Paths" (Rinnegan on the left, Sharingan on the right).
  • Should Han be confused with Roshi?
No. Roshi is the jinchuriki of the Four-Tails (Yonbi, Son Goku) and uses Lava Release (Yoton). He too is from Iwagakure and is reanimated at the same time as Han, hence the frequent confusion — but they are two distinct characters.

In summary

Han is a giant made of riddles: we do not know his face beneath the steam, his personality, or even the circumstances of his capture. What remains is an imposing silhouette and a lesson — in Naruto, even the most low-profile characters carry the power of a demon within them.
