Water Release and Wind Release combined give one of the rarest kekkei genkai. Hyoton shapes ice with surgical precision, as much to attack as to defend or lock down the battlefield. This feature details its principles and its properties, looks back at its main canon user, then at the context and the themes attached to this power. Typical techniques, important clarifications and a strategic reading of both the strengths and the limits complete the picture.

Hyoton (氷遁, " Ice Release” / Ice Release) is a rare kekkei genkai born from the combination of Suiton (Water Release) and Fūton (Wind Release). It makes it possible to create and manipulate ice with great precision for attack, defense and battlefield control.

Principles and Properties

  • Hybrid nature: fusion of Suiton + Fūton.
  • Versatility: projectiles, barriers, traps and terrain alteration.
  • Plausible constraints: techniques costly in chakra; greater effectiveness in damp environments; vulnerable to Katon (Fire Release).
  • Rarity: very few users confirmed in the main canon.
Haku, long black hair and a ninja headband, raises a single finger in a sign of concentration in front of a field of blue ice crystals
The seal is formed with a single hand: the ice is born from an internal combination of chakra, without going through an outside element.

Main Canon User

Haku

A native of a village in the Land of Water, Haku perfected Hyoton under the tutelage of Zabuza Momochi.

  • Makyo Hyosho (“Demonic Ice Mirrors”): ice mirrors between which Haku moves at high speed.
  • Sensatsu Suisho (“A Thousand Deadly Needles of Water"): needles of water launched at the enemy — note that it is a Suiton (Water Release) technique and not a Hyoton one, Haku's only signature ice technique remaining the Makyo Hyosho.

Canon note: Haku is the only Hyoton user in the original manga and the Naruto anime . The Boruto anime, however, introduces Ryogi (Land of Snow, former Byakuya Gang), and the official novel Kakashi Hiden features Kahyo and Rahyo.

At night, beneath bare trees, a tall man with the lower half of his face masked and in dark armor faces a child with long black hair who is looking up at him
Taken in by Zabuza, Haku learns to turn his bloodline into a weapon: it is under this tutelage that Hyoton takes shape in the series.

Context and Themes

In the Land of Water, kekkei genkai were persecuted, which explains the rarity of Hyoton. Ice evokes isolation, fragile beauty and contained violence.

A young child with black hair and gray clothes, alone in a dark, misty undergrowth
In the Land of Water, bearing a kekkei genkai meant persecution: there, ice speaks first of isolation.

Typical Techniques and Uses

  • Offense: ice lances, needles, surging spikes.
  • Defense: walls and domes of ice.
  • Terrain control: frozen surfaces, ice prisons.
  • Mobility: fast movement via mirrors (Haku).
Haku, arms spread and palms open, stands beneath a vast white ice dome that shields him as well as a man positioned behind him
Same volume of chakra, a different use: the ice closes into a dome and covers two people instead of striking.

Important Clarifications

  • Shoton of Guren is not Hyoton and has no confirmed link with Suiton+Fūton.
  • The autonomous ice creatures or healing through cold fall under fan theories.
In the undergrowth, a woman with dark blue hair stands with her arms crossed beside a person trapped in tall pink crystal spikes
Guren's Shoton also traps, but in pink crystal: neither the material nor the origin connects it to Hyoton.

Strategic Strengths and Limits

  • Strengths: excellent space control, fast transitions attack → defense.
  • Limits: heavy consumption of chakra, vulnerable to Katon, hard to master.

Useful Comparisons

  • Hyoton vs Mokuton: finesse and speed of execution vs volume and broad control.
  • Hyoton vs Sharingan: elemental vs ocular heredity with no direct link.
A ninja in a tactical vest, hands joined in a seal, in front of enormous brown trunks that fill the frame
Mokuton plays on volume and its grip on the setting, where Hyoton banks on finesse and speed of execution.

FAQ

  • What is Hyoton?
An elemental release combining Suiton and Fūton.
  • Who uses Hyoton in the canon?
Haku, trained in the Land of Water then taken in by Zabuza Momochi, is the only user in the original manga and Naruto anime, with his Makyo Hyosho (Demonic Ice Mirrors). Outside that series, the Boruto anime adds Ryogi, and the official novel Kakashi Hiden features Kahyo and Rahyo, two members of an ice bloodline who fled Kirigakure.
  • Is it related to Shoton?
No, these are two advanced natures that are different.
  • Its main weaknesses?
Katon superiority, high consumption of chakra.
  • Does Hyoton appear in Boruto?
Yes, but only in the anime. Boruto introduces Ryogi, a young ninja from the Land of Snow and a former member of the Byakuya Gang, who combines his water and wind chakra to release a swarm of ice darts (Hyoton: Mangehyo), freeze the ground to immobilize his opponents and raise ice walls and domes. Ryogi is a character created for the animated series: he does not appear in the manga.

In brief

Hyoton is a kekkei genkai that is rare (Suiton+Fūton) of which Haku is the main canon user (original Naruto series). Powerful and versatile, it remains demanding in chakra and vulnerable to Katon. The Shoton of Guren is completely distinct.
