Three tomoe, then the black flames of Amaterasu. The Uchiha dojutsu copies techniques, hypnotizes through genjutsu, then crosses a threshold with the Mangekyo Sharingan — Tsukuyomi, Susanoo, Kamui — at the cost of progressive blindness. The guide walks through every tier, from the first tomoe to the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan that restores sight through a transplant from a relative, all the way to the evolution into the Rinnegan under conditions. Madara, Sasuke and the other famous wielders round out the picture.
Copying techniques, hypnotic genjutsu, the black flames of Amaterasu… the Sharingan is arguably the most iconic power in Naruto. Here is the complete guide to the dojutsu of the Uchiha Clan: its levels, from the first tomoe to the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, its techniques and its famous wielders.

The Basic Sharingan: The Three Tomoe
The Sharingan ("Copy Wheel Eye") is a kekkei genkai hereditary to the Uchiha Clan, considered one of the "Three Great Dojutsu" along with the Byakugan and the Rinnegan. It most often awakens during severe emotional distress tied to a loved one.
Its abilities break down along two axes: the Eye of Insight (seeing chakra, perceiving and copying almost any observed technique — except those that stem from another kekkei genkai) and the Eye of Hypnotism (casting genjutsu through simple eye contact). The eye matures from one to three tomoe: all of its abilities exist from the very first stage, but gain in precision up to the complete form.

The Mangekyo Sharingan and Its Techniques
The Mangekyo Sharingan is an advanced form, awakened by intense trauma (canonically the loss of a loved one). Its pattern is unique to each wielder. It unlocks devastating techniques:
- Amaterasu: all but inextinguishable black flames at the spot where the gaze lands, mastered by Itachi and Sasuke.
- Tsukuyomi: a genjutsu that distorts the perception of time — Itachi inflicted on Kakashi the equivalent of three days of torture in an instant.
- Susanoo: an armored chakra avatar, which requires having awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan in both eyes.
- Kamui: a dimensional teleportation unique to Obito (short range and intangibility) and to Kakashi (long range, through the eye of Obito that was transplanted into him).
The price to pay: repeated use of the Mangekyo Sharingan gradually damages eyesight, all the way to blindness.

The Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and the Evolution into Rinnegan
To escape this blindness, an Uchiha can transplant the eyes of a close relative in order to obtain the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan: in the story, only Madara (with the eyes of his brother Izuna) and Sasuke (with Itachi's) manage it. The evolution into the Rinnegan, for its part, is in no way automatic: it goes through bringing together the chakra of Indra and Asura — Madara had to take in Hashirama's cells, and Sasuke to receive a share of the chakra of the Sage of the Six Paths.

Famous Sharingan Wielders
Besides Itachi, Sasuke, Obito and Madara, there are also Shisui (whose Kotoamatsukami allows undetectable mind control) and Fugaku. A special case: Kakashi is not an Uchiha — his Sharingan is Obito's left eye, received during the Third Great Ninja War. All of them descend from Indra Otsutsuki, the eldest son of the Sage of the Six Paths.

FAQ
-
How many tomoe does a complete Sharingan have?Three tomoe per eye. The abilities exist from a single tomoe onward, but grow stronger up to the complete stage at three tomoe.
-
How is the Mangekyo Sharingan awakened?Through intense emotional trauma, canonically the loss of a loved one. Its pattern is unique to each wielder.
-
What does going from the Sharingan to the Mangekyo Sharingan cost?It is paid for twice. To obtain it, an intense trauma is required, canonically the loss of a loved one, where the basic Sharingan only calls for strong emotional distress. In use, each activation of the Mangekyo Sharingan damages eyesight to the point of blindness, and only the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, obtained by transplanting the eyes of a close wielder, restores vision.
-
Is Kakashi an Uchiha? No. His Sharingan is Obito Uchiha's left eye, which was transplanted into him during the Third Great Ninja War.
-
Can the Sharingan become a Rinnegan?Yes, but not spontaneously: the chakra of Indra and Asura must be brought together, as with Madara (Hashirama's cells) or Sasuke (the chakra of the Sage of the Six Paths).
In summary
From the first tomoe to the flames of Amaterasu, the Sharingan on its own sums up the power and the tragedy of the Uchiha Clan: every tier is paid for at a steep price.
