Infinite Tsukuyomi puts the entire planet to sleep with a single reflection. Reflected onto the Moon from the Rinne Sharingan, this genjutsu locks every victim inside the life they would have wanted while their body feeds the God Tree. Here is how it works, what it shows, who escapes it, and how it is finally broken.

An Eye Reflected on the Moon

The Infinite Tsukuyomi is not just another genjutsu. It is the final step of the Eye of the Moon Plan, the one Madara passes on to Obito and that Black Zetsu manipulates from the shadows. To cast it, you must first gather the nine tailed beasts, reassemble the Ten-Tails, and become its jinchuriki. That status makes a third eye appear on the forehead: the Rinne Sharingan, the original eye of Kaguya Otsutsuki, halfway between the Sharingan and the Rinnegan. Without it, the technique stays out of reach.

The second ingredient is the Moon itself, which serves as the projection surface. The user reflects their Rinne Sharingan onto it, and the celestial body sends the genjutsu's light back over the entire planet. The detail is anything but trivial: the Moon was formed by Hagoromo and Hamura, who sealed the body of the Ten-Tails inside it by means of a Chibaku Tensei. The plan's ultimate weapon therefore rests on the monster's own prison. Madara, for his part, simply rises into the sky to hook his gaze onto it.

Once the reflection is in place, a white light sweeps across the world, strong enough to erase the night for as long as it lasts. There is no need to stare at the Moon: it is enough to be caught in that glow. The victims' pupils then fill with the concentric rings of the Rinnegan, the visible signature of its hold, and the body freezes on the spot. No ordinary shelter filters out the phenomenon, which strikes the fighters at the front and the civilians left behind in the villages at the very same moment.

Every caster has their own method. Obito, once he had become the Ten-Tails' jinchuriki, intended to go through the flower of the God Tree, whose top bore a Rinne Sharingan ready to bloom; he was stopped before that. Kaguya, for her part, had the eye from birth. Madara takes the most direct and most theatrical route. Behind the promise of a world without war hides an entirely different goal, whispered by Black Zetsu: to build an army again and bring back its creator.

The glow reaches civilians too, far from the front: the pupils fill with the rings of the Rinnegan and the body no longer responds.

The Dream Everyone Grants Themselves

The trap rests on one simple idea: this is not a nightmare. Every victim is plunged into the world they would have wanted, an existence where their wishes are granted and their regrets erased. The dead are alive there, failures never happened, feelings are returned. Nothing invites you to wake up, and that is exactly what makes the illusion impossible to fight from within: the sleeper has no reason to resist.

The manga gives a glimpse of it at the moment of the casting. Kiba dreams of himself as Hokage and declares a public holiday in honor of dogs. Gaara gets a whole family back and welcomes Naruto, who comes over to play at his home. Rock Lee finally wins Sakura's heart, Choji shares his table with a wife who cooks without holding back, Shino discovers an unknown species. These panels say the essential: the dream is tailor-made, intimate and modest rather than grandiose.

Meanwhile, the body is not sleeping peacefully. The roots of the God Tree burst from the ground, coil around the motionless sleepers, and wrap them in a tight bark that leaves only the face showing. Each cocoon stays connected to the tree, which slowly draws out the chakra of its occupant. The dream is not a reward offered to the defeated: it is the anesthesia of a livestock farm.

Over time, the effect becomes irreversible. Year after year, the tree drains its prisoners of their energy, then of their personality and even of their features. The process has already happened once: the army of White Zetsu lined up by the Akatsuki is the humanity of an earlier cycle, caught in Kaguya's first Infinite Tsukuyomi and spat back out as puppets. The eternal happiness promised ends in a loss of identity that is complete.

During the dream, each sleeper stays locked inside a cocoon connected to the tree, which slowly drains their chakra.

The Few Who Were Spared

On the scale of the planet, the list of survivors fits on one hand. The glow spreads everywhere and closing your eyes changes nothing; the only reprieve lies in its duration, since the reflection eventually goes out after a short while. Those who, during that interval, were shielded from the moonlight were spared. The dead, for their part, are by definition out of reach.

In the story, that shelter has a name: Sasuke's complete Susanoo . The immense winged armor closes at the right moment around Naruto, Sakura, and Kakashi, and the four members of Team 7 live through the event awake. Sasuke's Rinnegan also plays its part, that eye remaining the best known protection against ocular genjutsu. Obito escapes the common fate as well.

The irony is complete. The caster believes he has won the second his light spreads, but he leaves standing precisely the people capable of undoing his work. Without that handful of survivors, no one would be left to bring together the Rinnegan and the chakra of the tailed beasts at the right moment, and the world's sleep would then become permanent.

Closed in time, the Susanoo screens out the moonlight: its occupants live through the event awake.

The Only Way to Break the Spell

Hagoromo states it plainly: this genjutsu is not dispelled by willpower, nor by striking down the one who cast it. Two conditions must be met, the Rinnegan and the chakra of the nine tailed beasts. No other eye, no amount of raw power replaces that combination. It also explains the structure of the story's ending: the world can only be woken by the two boys to whom the Sage entrusted his powers.

After Kaguya is sealed, the pieces are finally gathered. Sasuke holds the Rinnegan and keeps the tailed beasts locked inside his Chibaku Tensei, while Naruto carries the Sage's legacy and the bond that ties him to the tailed beasts. The two of them still have to come to an understanding, which only happens at the end of their duel at the Valley of the End, from which each of them comes out having lost an arm.

Breaking the spell then comes down to a single gesture. Naruto holds out his left hand, Sasuke his right, the only ones they have left, and the sign is formed by the two of them together. The roots release their prisoners, the bark splits, and the sleepers open their eyes again where they had fallen. The Eye of the Moon Plan, built on centuries of manipulation, ends with a handshake between two reconciled opponents.

Naruto and Sasuke have only one hand each left: the sign that lifts the genjutsu can only be formed by the two of them together.

FAQ

  • Who cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi?
Madara projects it onto the Moon during the Fourth Great Ninja War, once he has become the Ten-Tails' jinchuriki and awakened his Rinne Sharingan. Kaguya Otsutsuki had already used it long before him, which is where the White Zetsu come from. Obito had made it his goal but never managed to activate it.
  • Can you resist it by closing your eyes?
No. The light sent back by the Moon spreads over the entire world and reaches the fighters just as much as the civilians who stayed home. In the story, the only ones spared owe it to a physical shelter, Sasuke's complete Susanoo, and not to an effort of will.
  • Why do the victims turn into White Zetsu?
A body caught in the roots of the God Tree is drained of its chakra without interruption. Over years, that draining erases the prisoner's personality and then their features. The army of White Zetsu lined up by the Akatsuki is made up of humans who went through Kaguya's first Infinite Tsukuyomi.
  • How long did the world stay asleep?
The story gives no figure for the duration. Between the casting and the release, only the fight against Kaguya and the duel at the Valley of the End take place, a very short span on the scale of the story. Without that intervention, however, the sleep would have gone on indefinitely.
  • Is it the most powerful genjutsu in Naruto?
In terms of reach, no other comes close: it is the only one to hit an entire planet at once. A standard illusion is dispelled by cutting off its chakra flow or with the help of an ally. This one gives way to a single condition, the Rinnegan combined with the chakra of the nine tailed beasts.

In summary

In summary, the Infinite Tsukuyomi is less an attack than a trap you consent to. It demands an outsized preparation, the nine tailed beasts gathered inside the Ten-Tails and a Rinne Sharingan reflected onto the Moon, and after that it needs nothing more: no one struggles against a dream that grants their every wish. The price is paid in silence, in the roots of the God Tree that empty the bodies and end up erasing identities. Its only weakness is to have left a few survivors standing, and it took Naruto and Sasuke putting an end to their fight for the world to open its eyes again.
