The Shimura clan is one of the oldest in Konoha, and one of the most silent. Only one figure truly represents it in the story: Danzo, founder of Root and architect of the decisions the village never voted on. Here is what the series really says about this bloodline, and what it leaves in the shadows.

A Bloodline From the Earliest Days

The Shimura clan ranks among the oldest bloodlines of Konohagakure. After the end of the Warring States era, it appears in the first group of clans to join the village barely founded by the Senju and the Uchiha. It does not get there alone: the Sarutobi clan takes the same step at the same moment. The two names are linked from the very beginning, and will stay that way to the end.

That rallying is no minor detail. The story specifies that Madara Uchiha himself greets the news with surprise, a sign that the Shimura name already carried weight in the shinobi landscape before the existence of Konoha. The clan is presented as a longtime ally of the Senju, which partly explains its immediate place in the village's new balance.

Beyond that framework, the series stays sparing. No kekkei genkai is attributed to the Shimura, no hereditary technique, no identified district within Konoha. They are credited with an affinity for Wind Release, the wind nature, but that is above all the specialty of the only member ever seen fighting. Where the Hyuga, the Nara, or the Aburame fill entire chapters, the Shimura fit into a few lines.

One confusion is worth clearing up along the way. It is often said that Torifu, Danzo's teammate in the days of the Second Hokage, was a Shimura. That is incorrect: Torifu belongs to the Akimichi clan, and even wears the kanji for food on his armor. Their constant closeness in flashback scenes explains the slip, but the Shimura clan in reality has only one face.

The handshake between Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha seals the birth of Konoha: it is this barely founded village that the Shimura join, in the very first group of clans to rally to it.

Danzo, Heir to a Line of Sacrifices

Danzo Shimura is the only member of the clan the story truly shows. He is born into a family of fighters and points it out himself, without emphasis: his father and his grandfather both died in battle, in the service of the village. This genealogy of deaths lights up his entire doctrine. Konoha's survival comes before the individual, and the price is paid without discussion.

The rest is settled early. Close to Hiruzen Sarutobi in childhood, he judges himself inferior and turns the bond into a rivalry. The two then serve under Tobirama Senju. During the First Great Ninja War, a moment of hesitation marks him for life: he cannot bring himself to volunteer as bait, someone else takes the role, and the title of Hokage slips away from him. Since he was unable to sacrifice himself, he will train men who are capable of it. The details of that episode, like the full trajectory of Danzo Shimura, reach far beyond the story of one family.

A young Danzo, the only member of the clan the story truly follows: son and grandson of men fallen in battle.

Root, the Army No One Ever Voted For

The Root, Ne in the original Japanese, is a clandestine branch of Konoha's special forces, founded and led by Danzo alone. The break comes down to one sentence: his agents obey him before they obey the Hokage. The village thus maintains, without really knowing it, a second chain of command.

Recruitment targets children of extraordinary talent, stripped of their name, their past, and their emotions. A Curse Mark placed on the tongue paralyzes anyone who would try to speak of Danzo or of the organization. Hiruzen eventually orders it disbanded and removes Danzo from the council, with no real effect: Root carries on its missions in the shadows until the death of its founder.

For the clan, that is where the essential lies. The only tangible legacy of the Shimura name is not a bloodline, but this parallel organization, absent from the village's records. Its internal workings and the line that separates it from the official Anbu belong to Konoha's special forces, not to Shimura genealogy.

In a dark underground hall, an elderly man with a bandage over his right eye, in dark clothing with one white sleeve, stands facing rows of young people seated with their backs turned.
All of Root is contained in this face-off: agents recruited as children, who obey Danzo before they obey the Hokage.

Hidden Influence, Then Erasure

Danzo's influence is measured by what he obtains without ever owning up to it publicly. When tension rises between Konoha and the Uchiha clan, he pushes aside the path of negotiation and argues for extermination, judging that it would ultimately cost less blood than an open confrontation. Itachi Uchiha carries it out, on the condition that his brother Sasuke be spared.

He then appropriates what the massacre leaves behind. The right eye of Shisui Uchiha gives him access to Kotoamatsukami, a genjutsu able to manipulate a target without leaving them the slightest suspicion. His right arm, grafted with cells of the First Hokage by Orochimaru, carries ten Sharingan that power Izanagi, the technique that cancels an injury at the cost of an eye.

His shadow reaches beyond the village's borders. He is the one who strikes a deal with Hanzo against the original Akatsuki, in Amegakure: the chain of events costs Yahiko his life and completes Nagato's downfall. Later, after Pain's attack, the council of the Land of Fire's Daimyo names him candidate for the position of Sixth Hokage. He will never be officially installed in it.

The end comes at the Five Kage Summit. Spotted by the sensor Ao, who recognizes Shisui's chakra, Danzo leaves the place and then faces Sasuke. A genjutsu makes him lose count of his Izanagi: he uses up his ten eyes and takes the fatal blow. The First's cells run wild, his arm starts growing like a tree, and he cuts it off. His last attempt, a self-destruction seal meant to take Sasuke with him, fails. With him disappears the only Shimura the story ever showed.

Named candidate for the position of Sixth Hokage, Danzo wears its trappings without ever being officially installed in it.

FAQ

  • Does the Shimura clan have a kekkei genkai?
No, no hereditary ability is attributed to it in the series. The clan has neither a particular dojutsu nor a secret technique passed down from generation to generation. The Sharingan that Danzo carries comes from implants taken from Uchiha, not from his own blood.
  • Does Torifu belong to the Shimura clan?
No, Torifu is a member of the Akimichi clan. He serves alongside Danzo and Kagami Uchiha in the unit placed under Tobirama Senju's command, which explains the frequent confusion. His armor also bears the kanji for food, the distinctive mark of the Akimichi.
  • How many Shimura appear in the series?
Only one is truly shown: Danzo. He mentions his father and his grandfather, both fallen in battle, but neither one appears on screen or is given a name. After his death, no other member of the clan is introduced.
  • Was Danzo ever Hokage?
He was named candidate for the position of Sixth Hokage by the council of the Land of Fire's Daimyo, after Pain's attack on Konoha. He dies, however, before any official investiture and is never confirmed by the village. It is Kakashi Hatake who will become the Sixth Hokage.
  • Did Root survive Danzo?
Hiruzen Sarutobi had already ordered it disbanded, with no real effect: Danzo kept operating it in secret. After the death of its founder, the organization is dismantled for good. Its former agents, like Sai, then rejoin the village's regular forces.

In summary

In summary, the Shimura clan is a paradox: a bloodline old enough and respected enough to surprise Madara when it joined Konoha, but one the story ultimately reduces to a single man. No kekkei genkai, no district, no gallery of portraits — only Danzo, his father and his grandfather fallen in battle, and the conviction born of a hesitation he never got over. The Root organization is the true legacy of the name: a parallel structure that weighed on Konoha's heaviest decisions without ever appearing in its records. When Danzo falls at the Five Kage Summit, it is the organization and the clan that die out together.
