An animal mask, a spiral tattoo on the shoulder. On one side, the Anbu, the special assassination and tactical squad that answers only to the Hokage. On the other, Danzo's Root, officially disbanded by Hiruzen but still active in the shadows, where recruits are conditioned to silence their emotions and carry a seal that paralyzes the body at the slightest confidence. Two faces of the shadows, and the famous operatives who wore them.

The ninja whose faces no one knows: on one side, the masked elite in the Hokage's service; on the other, one man's secret faction. Here are the Anbu and Root.

The Shadow Operatives

The Anbu is the unit of masked elite operatives in Konoha. Its members report directly to the Hokage and handle assassinations, espionage, and high-risk missions.

They wear animal masks, use code names, and hide their identity — a spiral tattoo on the shoulder is their only marking. Most villagers have no idea who is Anbu.

Origins and Recruitment

Anbu is an abbreviation. The full name is Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai, "Special Assassination and Tactical Squad." The two kanji of the short name, for their part, read "the dark side." No manga source names its founder: it is a spin-off work, the game Naruto Mobile, that credits the creation of the unit to Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage.

Recruitment does not follow the usual logic. The Hokage personally chooses his operatives. Age, gender, background, and previous rank are not taken into account: former genin serve alongside jonin. On the other hand, character comes first — a highly gifted shinobi can be turned away if his temperament cannot handle this kind of mission. Konoha tradition holds that no one joins before the age of thirteen, and promising children are spotted as early as the Ninja Academy. Once admitted, recruits study the human body among other subjects, and secrecy comes before everything: too badly wounded to escape capture, an Anbu is expected to destroy his own body.

The internal organization, for its part, is almost flat. No real ranks: authority rests on merit and experience. Teams are led by squad leaders, a highly regarded role that some mark with a white cape. An elite fraction serves in the Hokage's personal guard. In Konoha, the unit shares law enforcement with the military police, with no clear boundary between the two: an Anbu cannot be arrested by them without a warrant.

Command has changed hands over time. In the past, Ibiki Morino, already head of the interrogation unit, held the title of Anbu commander. In the Boruto era, it is Sai who holds the position of Anbu director. Root, for its part, was indeed disbanded when Danzo died: its former members scattered and were long treated as outcasts before they could rejoin the ranks of the regular Anbu — Tsunade and Kakashi having given up on investigating the villagers' pasts — and Sai works to pull them out of their founder's legacy.

Uniforms, Weapons, and Code Names

The Konoha uniform is standardized. Black clothing, a gray tactical vest, metal arm guards and gloves, cleated sandals for mountainous regions, three pouches at the back of the belt. Most operatives carry a sword strapped to the back, and some add a black cape over the outfit.

Root is recognized by other details. Beneath the ordinary Anbu cape and mask, its members have no truly standardized uniform: each keeps his own outfit, with a short black jacket with red straps as the only common feature. In place of the katana, they carry a tanto with no point Their code names are borrowed from the ten Heavenly Stems of the Sino-Japanese calendar, from Kinoe to Mizunoto.

Every village has its own conventions. In Kirigakure, the masks are pierced with slits and engraved with the village symbol on the forehead, with human rather than animal features. A specialized branch, the hunter-nin, hunts down rogue ninja: it brings back the head as proof and disposes of the rest of the body, so that no village secret — chakra natures, remedies, kekkei genkai — falls into enemy hands.

Elsewhere, the same logic repeats. Sunagakure's Anbu cover the lower half of their faces with a cloth that leaves only the eyes visible. In the Land of Woods, the Prajna Group wears porcelain masks carved in the likeness of oni; Danzo would eventually wipe it out to the last man.

Famous Anbu

Several legends passed through the Anbu. Itachi joined at the age of eleven, the youngest known, and became a squad leader at thirteen.

Kakashi was in fact his captain early on. Yamato, for his part, served in it as a user of the rare Wood Release.

Yugao and Tenzo, Two Paths

The Ro squad is the elite unit placed directly under the Hokage's command, with Kakashi as captain. Itachi served in it before being promoted in turn, and his place was then taken by Yugao Uzuki.

Yugao Uzuki joined the unit as a child, chosen for her kenjutsu and her sensor abilities. Her porcelain mask depicts a cat marked with three red lines. It was she who, when the Ro squad was sent to the Uchiha district the day after the massacre, found Sasuke, the sole survivor.

One man carried three names. Taken in as a child by Danzo, a survivor of Orochimaru's experiments, he first served in Root under the code name Kinoe — the only member Danzo trained in person. Handed over to the Third Hokage and then assigned to the Ro squad, he took that of Tenzo, which Kakashi insisted he bear. He became Yamato only much later, when Tsunade assigned him to Team 7.

Danzo's Root

As for Root (Ne), it is something else entirely: a secret faction founded by Danzo, which he runs as his own organization.

Officially disbanded by Hiruzen after Danzo's involvement in the Uchiha Clan massacre, it actually remained active in the shadows until its leader's death. Its members obeyed Danzo before the Hokage.

The Tongue Seal

Every member of Root receives a Curse Mark on the back of the tongue. Any attempt to reveal a secret about Danzo instantly paralyzes his body.

Worse: if the bearer's mind is probed, the seal inflicts an instant death on him before any information can leak. A device designed for flawless espionage, and one that vanishes when Danzo dies.

Conditioning the Recruits

Root's conditioning is brutal: young recruits, raised as brothers, are forced to kill one another in order to destroy all emotion.

This is the case for Sai, an orphan stripped of everything — down to his name. A key distinction: Itachi, Kakashi, and Yamato were Anbu of the village; Sai, for his part, came from Danzo's Root.

FAQ

  • What is the difference between the Anbu and Root?
The Anbu is Konoha's official special unit (assassination, espionage, high-risk missions) that reports directly to the Hokage. Root is a secret faction founded by Danzo: officially disbanded but kept going in secret, its members obeyed Danzo before the Hokage.
  • Why do Root members have a seal on their tongue?
Danzo places a Curse Mark on them: any attempt to reveal information about him instantly paralyzes their body, and a mental probe inflicts deadly pain on them before anything can be extracted — enough to prevent leaks in case of capture. This seal vanishes when Danzo dies.
  • Who are the famous members of the Anbu and Root?
On the Anbu side: Itachi (who joined at 11, squad leader by 13), Kakashi (his captain early on), and Yamato. On the Root side: Sai, as well as Torune Aburame and Fu Yamanaka, Danzo's two bodyguards.
  • How does Root suppress emotions?
Through extreme conditioning: young recruits are raised together as brothers, then forced to kill one another, in order to destroy all attachment. Sai, conditioned this way, had lost almost all emotion.
  • Is Root really disbanded during the series?
No. Disbanded "on paper" by Hiruzen after the Uchiha massacre, it stayed active in the shadows until Danzo's death. Its members put Danzo's orders before the Hokage's: it is a branch loyal to one man, not to the village.
  • Who commands Konoha's Anbu?
The unit answers to the Hokage, who personally selects its members. Inside it, there are no real ranks: authority rests on merit and experience, and teams are led by squad leaders. Ibiki Morino held the title of Anbu commander in the past, at the same time as he ran the interrogation unit. In the Boruto era, it is Sai who holds the position of Anbu director.
  • Are Yamato and Tenzo two different characters?
No, they are the same man, and both are code names. Taken in by Danzo, he first operated in Root under the name Kinoe, took that of Tenzo when he joined the Ro squad led by Kakashi, then received that of Yamato when Tsunade assigned him to Team 7. He also insists on being called by his code name of the moment.
  • Did Kakashi stay in the Anbu his whole career?
No. Minato assigned him to the unit after Rin's death, as much to keep him close as for his skills. Kakashi became a captain there and led the Ro squad. After the Uchiha Clan massacre, the Third Hokage judged that sensitive hearts have no place in that corps, thanked him for his years of service, and sent him back to the regular forces, where he became an instructor.

In summary

Two faces of Konoha's shadow: the Anbu, which serves the village in secret, and Root, which, under cover of protecting it, betrays its ideals. The entire question of shinobi "good" lies in that gap.
