Kurenai and Her Three Genin

Team 8 brings together the jonin-sensei Kurenai Yuhi and three genin: Hinata Hyuga, Kiba Inuzuka (with his ninja dog Akamaru) and Shino Aburame. It is also called Team Kurenai.

Kurenai herself is above all a genjutsu specialist. So it is not the sensei who gives the unit its calling, but the combination of the inherited gifts of her three students.

The Byakugan of Hinata gives panoramic vision and chakra perception; the sense of smell of Kiba and Akamaru picks up the faintest trail; Shino's kikaichu insects track and drain chakra. Enough to make it the benchmark tracking unit of the village.

Three Clans, Three Gifts

Each genin comes from a clan with a hereditary ability in Konoha: the Hyuga and their dojutsu, the Inuzuka and their canine partner, the Aburame and their symbiosis with insects.

This gathering of three specialized bloodlines is no accident: it makes Team 8 a machine for flushing out and following any target, where other teams shine in assault.

Kurenai's Step Back

In Part II, Kurenai becomes pregnant and steps back from active missions. This is not an official dissolution of the team, but a putting on hold.

It is then Kakashi who leads the three genin, within the Eight Man Squad sent in pursuit of Sasuke and Itachi. The father of Kurenai's child is Asuma Sarutobi, the sensei of another team, killed by Hidan; their daughter Mirai will be born after his death.

What Becomes of the Members

A rare thing: none of the four members of Team 8 dies or defects over the course of the series — unlike the neighboring team that loses its sensei, or Might Guy's team, which loses Neji. A stability that is remarkable.

As adults, the members follow different paths: Hinata marries Naruto, Shino becomes a teacher at the Ninja Academy, Kiba remains a shinobi. But their past as a tracking team never comes undone.
