Three legendary eyes, a single bloodline of origin. This guide reviews the dojutsu, among the most coveted eye powers in the ninja world: the Uchiha Sharingan, inherited from Indra, with its technique copying and its genjutsu; the Hyuga Byakugan, tied to Hamura, its near-360° vision and its blind spot at the back of the neck; the Rinnegan of the Sage of the Six Paths, reputed to be the most powerful. Then the rarest ones: Tenseigan, Rinne Sharingan, and Jogan.
Three legendary eyes, a single bloodline of origin. In Naruto, eye techniques — the dojutsu — are among the most coveted powers. Here is the guide to these eyes, from the three most famous to the rarest.

What is a dojutsu?
A dojutsu is a technique tied to the eyes, a by-product of a hereditary gift. Most are kekkei genkai, but not all: the Rinne Sharingan falls under kekkei mora, one rank above.
The " Three Great Dojutsu " are the Sharingan, the Byakugan, and the Rinnegan. A fascinating common thread: all these bloodlines go back to a single clan, the Otsutsuki.

The Sharingan, the eye of the Uchiha
The Sharingan is the kekkei genkai of the Uchiha clan, which descends from Indra, the Sage's eldest son. Awakened by an emotional shock, it copies enemy techniques, casts genjutsu, and anticipates movements.
It evolves into the Mangekyo Sharingan in the face of a major trauma, then into the Eternal Mangekyo by grafting the eyes of a close relative — like Madara, who took those of his brother Izuna.

The Byakugan, the eye of the Hyuga
The Byakugan is associated with the Hyuga clan, tied to the branch of the Otsutsuki descended from Hamura. It offers near-360° vision, with a single blind spot at the back of the neck.
Above all, it perceives the chakra network and the 361 tenketsu points, which makes it the inseparable companion of the Hyuga's Gentle Fist (Juken).

The Rinnegan, the eye of the Sage
The Rinnegan is reputed to be the most powerful of the three: it is the dojutsu of the Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo, tied to the chakra of his mother Kaguya. It grants access to the Six Paths and mastery of the five natures.
Two canon paths to obtain it: Madara awakens it by merging the DNA of Hashirama with his own, then passes it on to Nagato and Obito; Sasuke, for his part, awakens it thanks to the chakra given to him by Hagoromo.

The rare eyes: Tenseigan, Rinne Sharingan, Jogan
Beyond the Three Great ones, three exceptional eyes. The Tenseigan is born when an Otsutsuki receives a Byakugan from a Hyuga: it is the eye of Toneri in The Last: Naruto the Movie. The Rinne Sharingan, Kaguya's forehead eye, is presented as the origin of all dojutsu and is used to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Finally, the Jogan, the "Pure Eye" of Boruto, is an anime concept: never confirmed in the manga, where his right eye is even shown as a Byakugan. Its status remains an open mystery.

Summary Table
| Dojutsu | Details |
|---|---|
| Sharingan (Uchiha clan) | Indra's bloodline. Technique copying (except kekkei genkai), genjutsu, precognition; tomoe 1→2→3. Evolves into the Mangekyo Sharingan, then the Eternal Mangekyo (Madara/Izuna). |
| Byakugan (Hyuga clan) | Tied to Hamura. Near-360° vision (blind spot at the back of the neck), perception of chakra and of the 361 tenketsu, sight through obstacles; the basis of the Gentle Fist (Juken). |
| Rinnegan (Sage of the Six Paths) | Reputed to be the most powerful. Six Paths + Outer Path + five natures. Awakened via Hashirama's DNA (Madara → Nagato → Obito) or Hagoromo's chakra (Sasuke, left eye, 6 tomoe). |
| Tenseigan & Rinne Sharingan | Tenseigan = Byakugan + Otsutsuki chakra (Toneri, The Last: Naruto the Movie, semi-canon). Rinne Sharingan = Kaguya's forehead eye (kekkei mora), origin of the Sharingan and the Rinnegan, casts the Infinite Tsukuyomi. |
| Jogan (Boruto) | "Pure Eye," an ANIME-only concept — never confirmed in the manga (Two Blue Vortex shows a Byakugan in Boruto's right eye). Mysterious/debated origin and status. |
FAQ
-
What are the "Three Great Dojutsu"?The Sharingan (Uchiha clan), the Byakugan (Hyuga clan), and the Rinnegan (reputed to be the most powerful, the dojutsu of the Sage of the Six Paths). This guide gives an overview; the details are in the pages dedicated to each one.
-
Which bloodline is each dojutsu tied to?Sharingan → Uchiha clan, descended from Indra Otsutsuki. Byakugan → Hyuga clan, tied to Hamura Otsutsuki. Rinnegan and Rinne Sharingan → the Sage of the Six Paths Hagoromo and his mother Kaguya Otsutsuki. All these branches go back to the Otsutsuki.
-
How do you obtain the Rinnegan? Two canon paths. Madara Uchiha awakens it by merging Hashirama Senju's DNA with his own; he then secretly passes it on to Nagato, and Obito later inherits it. Sasuke, for his part, awakens a single Rinnegan (left eye, 6 tomoe) thanks to the chakra Hagoromo gives him.
-
What are the Rinne Sharingan and the Infinite Tsukuyomi? The Rinne Sharingan is Kaguya's third eye on her forehead (kekkei mora rank), presented as the predecessor of the Sharingan and the Rinnegan — and therefore the origin of all dojutsu. It is used to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a genjutsu that traps all of humanity, and that only the Rinnegan combined with the chakra of the nine tailed beasts can undo.
-
Is Boruto's Jogan canon? It is an anime concept (the "Pure Eye"), named by an animator and spoken only once on screen. It has never been confirmed in the manga: in Two Blue Vortex, Boruto's right eye is shown as a Byakugan, not a Jogan. Its status is therefore debated and its origin remains a mystery.
In summary
The dojutsu tell, on their own, the entire genealogy of chakra: from the Uchiha Sharingan to the Hyuga Byakugan, they all converge on the Otsutsuki clan and its original eye. To understand the eyes in Naruto is to trace back to the very source of ninja power.
