Five men have worn the Kazekage hat, and none left Sunagakure intact. From Reto, who gathered the scattered ninja of the desert, to Gaara, appointed at fifteen, the office passes down through a family kekkei genkai, a deliberate jinchuriki policy and a post reputed to be cursed, from which no holder came out alive. Here is the line in order.

Reto and Shamon, the Founding

Sunagakure was not born of a treaty but of a gathering. Reto, the First Kazekage, united under his authority the scattered desert ninja of the Land of Wind. His power alone was enough to impose that unity. The Hidden Sand Village exists from that point on: a single military force, backed by the daimyo of the Land of Wind.

Reto sat at the first Five Kage Summit, convened by the First Hokage. Konoha proposed there to share out the tailed beasts it held in order to balance power between the villages. Reto announced that Sunagakure already had one of them and demanded something else: a share of the fertile lands of the Land of Fire, plus thirty percent of what each nation would have to pay. The demand was judged excessive. He did not back down.

The future Second Kazekage accompanied him at that table. Shamon attended only as a second and merely listened to the debates: it was Reto who reminded the assembly that the agreement rested not on feelings but on the distribution of the tailed beasts controlled by Hashirama. Reto was later assassinated, and Shamon succeeded him.

His reign shaped Sunagakure for a long time. Shamon was the first to study jinchuriki in the hope of increasing the village's power: the idea that would produce Gaara two generations later. He focused the rest of his efforts on military strength, substituting puppets for shinobi, exploiting the desert terrain and developing a way of fighting with several partners. The puppet became the village's signature.

The Third Kazekage and Iron Sand

The Third Kazekage was never given a name in the story. He is still referred to by his rank alone. That silence fits his fate: he is the only leader of Sunagakure whose disappearance remained a mystery to his own village. He is nevertheless presented as the most powerful Kazekage of his era.

His technique was born of an observation. After studying the Shukaku jinchuriki of his time, he reproduced the manipulation of sand by combining his magnetic chakra with iron powder. The result was Iron Sand, able to take the shape of weapons suited to every situation. Chiyo saw in it the most feared weapon in Sunagakure's history.

Then he vanished. Sasori, a puppeteer and rogue ninja from the village, abducted and killed him to turn him into a human puppet. He would make him his favorite, because of the effort the capture had required. Sunagakure searched for its leader relentlessly and without result.

The ongoing war forced the village to decide. It appointed a Fourth Kazekage while continuing the search in the years that followed. The truth only came out at the start of the Fifth's reign, when Sasori deployed the puppet in front of Chiyo and Sakura Haruno. An entire kekkei genkai , Magnet Release (Jiton), had thus changed sides without anyone knowing.

Rasa, Gold Dust and the Human Weapon

The Fourth Kazekage was named Rasa. He used the same kekkei genkai as his predecessor in another form: Gold Dust, which he moved in mass across the battlefield. His reign opened on a budget problem. The daimyo of the Land of Wind entrusted his missions to the shinobi of Konoha, and Sunagakure declined.

His answer was a weapon. Rasa ordered Chiyo to seal Shukaku inside his unborn son to give the village its ultimate asset. Karura, his wife, died of that birth; Gaara was born prematurely, despite his father's efforts to save her.

What followed was protocol, not accident. Rasa tasked Yashamaru, Karura's brother, with attacking the child and lying to him about his mother, in order to test his emotional stability as a jinchuriki. The assassination attempts were then repeated against his own son, judged uncontrollable.

His end was as brutal as his politics. Rasa accepted an alliance with Orochimaru against Konoha, planning to unleash Shukaku in the middle of the village during the Chunin Exams. Before the finals, Orochimaru ran him through the chest, killed his guards and took his face in order to steer Sunagakure in his place. The body, decomposed and faceless, was only found on the outskirts of the village after the invasion failed.

Gaara, the Turning Point of the Line

Gaara took the office at fifteen. No Kazekage had worn the hat so young. His calling was born of a defeat: beaten by Naruto Uzumaki, a jinchuriki like him but strong through his bonds, he decided to follow his example. The motive reverses his father's, since he governs to protect the village that feared him.

The post nearly killed him right away. Akatsuki abducted him, Deidara captured him, and Shukaku was extracted from him, which killed him. Chiyo then attempted her resurrection technique, no longer had enough life force, and brought Gaara back only with the chakra lent by Naruto, at the cost of her own existence. The woman who had sealed the tailed beast inside the child paid to give him back.

He nevertheless kept his mastery of sand after the extraction. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Gaara became regimental commander of the Allied Shinobi Forces, with Shikamaru as his right hand and deputy commander of the Fourth Division, the long-range fighters.

The line closes on a face-off. Rasa, brought back by the Edo Tensei (Reanimation Jutsu) as reinforcement for Mu (Second Tsuchikage) alongside the Second Mizukage and the Third Raikage, faced his son. He revealed to him that the sand that protected him did not come from Shukaku but from Karura's love, and admitted having ordered Yashamaru's lie as a simple test. Gaara forgave him before he was sealed.

FAQ

  • How many Kazekage have there been?
Five: Reto, Shamon, the Third who remained anonymous, Rasa and Gaara, who still holds the office.
  • Why does the Third Kazekage have no name?
His identity is never given in the work. He is referred to only by his rank: only his techniques, his reputation and his disappearance are documented.
  • Who killed the Fourth Kazekage?
Orochimaru, just before the finals of the Chunin Exams. He ran him through the chest, killed his guards, then took on his appearance to lead the invasion of Konoha in his place.
  • What is the Magnet Release of the Kazekage?
A rare kekkei genkai passed down in the Kazekage family, presented as a combination of the Wind Release and Earth Release natures. It allows large amounts of mineral matter to be magnetized and steered: iron sand for the Third, gold dust for Rasa.
  • Does Gaara's sand come only from Shukaku?
No. He keeps his mastery of it after the tailed beast's extraction, and Rasa tells him that the automatic protection of his sand came from his mother Karura, not from the demon.

In summary

Read as a whole, the line of the Kazekage tells a single obsession: making up for the poverty of the desert with a decisive weapon. Shamon studied jinchuriki, the Third copied Shukaku's power with iron powder, Rasa sealed the tailed beast inside his own child. Every attempt turned against the village: a leader stolen and turned into a puppet, another stabbed by his ally, and a son who grew up beyond all control. Gaara is the first to break that cycle: he stops looking for the weapon and becomes again the protector the office was supposed to designate.
