The Third Kazekage is regarded as the most powerful leader Sunagakure has ever had. His weapon, the Iron Sand, springs from an idea as simple as it is fearsome: imitate Shukaku's sand with iron powder and a magnetic field. His disappearance remained a mystery for twenty years, until Sasori revealed that he had made him his favorite human puppet.

Iron Sand, a brilliant imitation
The Third Kazekage possessed Magnet Release (Jiton), a kekkei genkai that converts chakra into magnetic force. The series presents it as a composite nature, most likely born from the combination of Wind Release and Earth Release (Doton). The gift remains extremely rare: only a handful of users appear in the entire series. In practice, it let him attract, repel and shape metal at a distance, with no contact and no support.
The gift alone does not explain his reputation. The Third observed the Shukaku jinchuriki of his era and the way he commanded sand. From it he drew a methodical reconstruction: replace the grains of sand with iron powder, then steer them by magnetism rather than by pure chakra. This imitation has a name, the Iron Sand (satetsu, also often rendered as "iron filings").
Three named techniques structure the arsenal, all of them shown on screen through the puppet. The Iron Sand Drizzle hardens the material into minute grains fired like bullets, accelerated by magnetic repulsion. The Iron Sand Gathering Assault instead compacts an enormous mass into a single shape: a triangular spear, a hammer, oversized nails. The Iron Sand World merges two masses of opposite polarity and, through repulsion, scatters a sphere of spikes that branch out with no readable logic.
The side effect is worth as much as the attack. The magnetic field denies the opponent the use of his metal weapons and clogs the joints of puppets, freezing them outright. Against a village built on puppetry, the advantage is overwhelming. Chiyo herself describes the technique as the most feared weapon in the history of Sunagakure.

A disappearance without a body
The Third vanishes without a trace. Some twenty years before Gaara's abduction, Sasori leaves Sunagakure; it is around this time that he abducts and kills his own Kazekage. The operation stays secret. The village never suspects one of its own puppeteers for a moment.
Sunagakure searches, for a long time, and finds nothing. No body, no claim of responsibility, no lead. The prolonged absence of a sitting leader becomes untenable: the wartime context forces the council to settle the matter and install a Fourth Kazekage, Rasa. The search then continues on and off, without ever reaching a conclusion.
The case only closes at the start of the reign of the Fifth Kazekage, Gaara. The truth then comes from the culprit's own mouth, in the middle of a fight, dropped almost like an anecdote. For Chiyo, the revelation is twofold: the murderer of the leader she served is none other than her own grandson.

Sasori's masterpiece puppet
The human puppet is the pinnacle of Sasori's art. The process turns a corpse into an articulated puppet while preserving the subject's chakra, and therefore his techniques and his kekkei genkai. Applied to the Third Kazekage, it hands a rogue ninja the Magnet Release and the Iron Sand of a sitting Kage.
Sasori makes no secret of it: this piece is his favorite, precisely because the Third was the hardest to bring down. He keeps it sealed in a scroll marked with the kanji for "three". The rest of the collection numbers 297 other bodies, about a hundred of which will be deployed later in the same fight.
The body has been rearmed from top to bottom. A retractable-blade claw on the right arm, a hidden scythe, a multiple-hands mechanism and a circular saw on the left arm, a magnetic device housed in the chest. The Iron Sand itself is stored inside the puppet, then expelled through the mouth.
Above all, Sasori has soaked every blade, and the Iron Sand itself, in his poison, which paralyzes the victim before killing them in three days. A single scratch is enough. A puppet that was already hard to hit becomes a weapon you do not survive on first contact.

The duel against Chiyo and Sakura
After Shukaku's extraction, Sasori stays behind to hold off Chiyo and Sakura Haruno. His first puppet, Hiruko, shatters with a single punch: Chiyo manipulates Sakura from a distance like a puppet to bring her into close range. Sasori answers by deploying the Third Kazekage.
Chiyo counters with the two puppets featuring his parents, the very first ones Sasori ever built, left behind in the village after his desertion. They do not hold: the Iron Sand works its way into their joints and locks them up. The shapes come one after another, spear, hammer, then the sphere of branching spikes.
Two details save the kunoichi. Sakura had prepared antidotes before leaving Sunagakure; their effect is brief and forces the two women to finish quickly. And the training she received from Tsunade has taught her to read an opponent's attack patterns. She ends up anticipating the movements, deliberately leaves herself open to lower Sasori's guard, and destroys the puppet.
The anime adds an unsettling epilogue. There, Orochimaru reanimates the real Third Kazekage with the Edo Tensei (Reanimation Jutsu) and pits him against his own copy. The original's Magnet Release clearly dominates the puppet's. Then, treated as a mere pawn, the Kazekage takes back control of himself and cancels the technique, refusing to be anyone's tool.

FAQ
-
Does the Third Kazekage have a name? No. Neither the manga nor the anime ever gives him a personal name: he is designated only by his title. Several secondary Kage in the series are in the same position, reduced to their rank and their village. That absence reinforces his status as an almost legendary figure in Sunagakure.
-
Why is he considered the most powerful of the Kazekage? His reputation rests on the Iron Sand, which Chiyo presents as the most feared weapon in the village's history. It outlives him by a wide margin: decades after his disappearance, he is still cited as the strongest of the line. Sasori himself admits that he had a very hard time killing him, which explains why he made him his favorite puppet.
-
What is the difference between the Iron Sand and Gaara's sand?Gaara's sand is still sand, moved by chakra. The Iron Sand is iron powder moved by a magnetic field: denser, sharper, and able to neutralize an opponent's weapons or metal joints. The Fourth Kazekage pushed the same logic elsewhere, with a gold dust developed to counter Shukaku's jinchuriki.
-
How is the Third Kazekage's puppet destroyed? It is Sakura Haruno who puts it out of action. Trained by Tsunade to read attack patterns, she ends up anticipating the puppet's movements, deliberately leaves herself open to relax Sasori's vigilance, then strikes. In the anime, Chiyo then tries to turn the puppet's head against her grandson, who incinerates it at once.
-
Does the Third Kazekage appear in person in the manga?Very late. Throughout the Sunagakure arc, all we see is his corpse turned into a puppet. His real figure only arrives at the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, when the Sage of the Six Paths summons the souls of all the deceased Kage to bring back Team 7 and the Tailed Beasts. The anime also devotes an episode to him in which Orochimaru reanimates him.
In summary
In summary, the Third Kazekage is less a character than a shadow cast over the whole Sunagakure arc. A shinobi with no known name, whose genius came down to a single insight: imitating a Tailed Beast with iron powder and a magnetic field. His disappearance left his village without an answer for twenty years, his death armed his killer, and his corpse very nearly took Sakura and Chiyo with it. He only shows himself in person at the very end of the manga, just long enough for the souls of the departed Kage to bring back Team 7 and the Tailed Beasts. A whole life told backwards, through what was made of it after his death.
