Episodes 107 to 135 of the first series form the Sasuke Recovery Mission arc, twenty-nine episodes without a single filler episode. Five genin led by Shikamaru set out after a rogue ninja, each one faces a servant of Orochimaru, and everything comes down to the Valley of the End. This guide covers the trigger, the makeup of the team, the duels, the final battle and its consequences.

The Trigger: From the Hospital Roof to the Night Escape

The arc opens with episode 107, which aired in Japan on November 3, 2004. Sasuke challenges Naruto on the roof of the hospital in Konoha. The two of them simultaneously launch a Chidori and a Rasengan; Kakashi steps in and deflects both techniques, which tear into the water tower and the wall. Sasuke has just seen that the dunce he despised has caught up with him.

Episode 109 sets up the temptation. Four ninja sent by Orochimaru offer Sasuke immediate power in exchange for defecting. The Curse Mark placed during the Chunin Exams serves as their argument: it will only reach its full power in contact with its owner. Sasuke leaves the village that very night. Sakura is waiting for him at the village exit, confesses her feelings and begs him to stay; he thanks her, then knocks her out and leaves her on a bench.

Episode 110, which aired on November 24, 2004, launches the mission. Tsunade summons Shikamaru, promoted to chunin shortly before and the only one of his year to have been, and orders him to put together a squad within the hour. Sakura begs Naruto to bring Sasuke back; he answers her with the promise of a lifetime, a phrase that comes back word for word in episode 135.

Shikamaru's Team and the Chain of Duels

Shikamaru picks four available teammates: Naruto, Choji, Kiba along with Akamaru, and Neji. He puts Kiba up front for his sense of smell, Neji behind for the Byakugan, and imposes a formation with strict fallback orders. Facing them, four servants of Orochimaru: Jirobo, Kidomaru, Sakon flanked by his brother Ukon, and Tayuya. With Kimimaro, too sick to walk at the time, they originally formed a group of five.

Sasuke travels sealed inside a barrel, the time his mark needs to reach its second stage; he only comes out of it in episode 118. Choji opens the run of duels in episodes 112 to 114. Jirobo traps the team under an earth dome that drains chakra. Choji stays behind alone and swallows his clan's three pills: the green one, the yellow one, then the red one, which multiplies his strength at the cost of his life force. He wins and collapses.

Neji faces Kidomaru in episodes 115 to 117, the first of which aired on December 22, 2004. The archer weaves a golden web and eventually spots the one blind spot of the Byakugan, at the back. Neji takes an arrow, keeps hold of the thread linking him to his opponent and sends his chakra back up that thread to strike the heart. He wins, leaving his own body on the brink of death.

Kiba and Akamaru face Sakon and Ukon from episode 119 on, two brothers able to merge with their target's body. Shikamaru runs into Tayuya from episode 121 on: her flute commands three creatures and scrambles her targets' senses. Rock Lee arrives in episode 123, barely out of surgery performed by Tsunade, and fights Kimimaro using the Drunken Fist after drinking from a bottle by mistake. Episode 125 brings in the reinforcements from Sunagakure: Kankuro frees Kiba, Temari settles Shikamaru's duel by cutting down the forest, Gaara steps in front of Lee. Kimimaro dies of his illness in episode 127, at the very moment he was about to win.

Shikamaru opens the confrontation by locking down Orochimaru's four servants with his shadow, long enough to set up the formation.

Valley of the End: Naruto Versus Sasuke

Episode 128, which aired on March 30, 2005, opens the arc's real subject. Naruto catches up with Sasuke at the Valley of the End, a gorge framed by two giant statues: Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, and Madara Uchiha. The setting is not gratuitous, it is the site of the founding duel between a Senju and an Uchiha, replayed a generation later.

Episodes 129 to 131 interrupt the fight to unfold the past of the Uchiha Clan: the massacre, the relationship with the father, and the condition Itachi set for obtaining the Mangekyo Sharingan, revealed in episode 131 of April 20, 2005. Kill your closest friend. The viewer then understands exactly what Sasuke is weighing as he stands over Naruto's body.

Episodes 132 to 134 string together the power-ups. First exchange, Chidori against Rasengan at the foot of the cliff. Then Sasuke unfolds the second stage of his mark, dark skin and membranous wings, while Naruto draws a tail of the Nine-Tails' chakra. The final clash, in episode 134 which aired on May 11, 2005, leaves both bodies at the bottom of the valley.

Sasuke gets back up in the rain. He does not kill Naruto, leaves his forehead protector behind on the spot — scratched by Naruto at the last instant as he pulled his blow — and walks away. Kakashi arrives too late with Pakkun and recovers a survivor, not a fugitive. Spread over seven episodes, this duel remains the longest confrontation in the first series.

What the Arc Closes and What It Opens

Episode 135, which aired on May 18, 2005, closes the books on the mission: it is a failure. Naruto apologizes to Sakura for not keeping his word, then restates his promise. Choji and Neji are brought back in critical condition; Choji survives only because Tsunade has the Nara clan's research on the poison in the pills. Sasuke, for his part, officially becomes a rogue ninja.

On the manga side, the arc closes Part I: chapter 238 is its last. There Jiraiya offers to take Naruto away to train with him, and Sakura asks Tsunade to take her on as a student. The two-and-a-half-year time skip that follows leads straight into Naruto Shippuden.

On the anime side, the conclusion is offset. Episodes 136 to 219 are filler episodes, and only episode 220 reconnects the story to the manga by showing Naruto's departure with Jiraiya. The arc itself, by contrast, contains no filler at all across its twenty-nine episodes, which remains rare in the first series.

Two mechanics set up here will be used constantly afterward. First, Naruto's classmates become independent fighters, each identified by a clan technique. Second, the Valley of the End becomes the reference setting for the bond between the two boys, all the way to their final confrontation at the very end of Shippuden.

In summary

Twenty-nine episodes, six duels, an owned failure. The Sasuke Recovery Mission arc matters less for what it resolves than for what it locks in: Sasuke's escape, Naruto's debt to Sakura, and the long-fight format that will become the series' signature. If you are revisiting the first series and targeting the essentials, episodes 107 to 135 can be watched in one block, without a break, right up to the final shot in the rain.
