Character

What good is an iron fan against a shadow manipulator? The eldest of Kankuro and Gaara, Temari stands out as one of the most memorable kunoichi in Naruto: strategist, long-range fighter, absolute mistress of Wind Release (Fūton). This profile reviews her tessen, the summoning of the weasel Kamatari through Kirikiri Mai, her famous duel with Shikamaru during the Chunin Exams, and then her move from Sunagakure to Konoha.

Headstrong, a formidable strategist and absolute mistress of the wind: Temari is one of the most memorable kunoichi in Naruto. Gaara's big sister, a long-range fighter armed with a giant fan, she moves from the Hidden Sand camp to Konoha's — and even starts a family there. Profile of a warrior whose temper is as sharp as her gusts.

Who Is Temari?

Temari is a kunoichi from Sunagakure, the Hidden Sand Village. Daughter of the Fourth Kazekage, she is the eldest of three siblings: ahead of Kankuro and the youngest, Gaara. Self-assured, sarcastic and a sharp strategist, she hides a real loyalty toward her brothers behind her blunt talk.

A blonde kunoichi with her hair pulled up into four spiky ponytails, a Sunagakure ninja headband on her brow and a large dark fan closed on her back, stands in the foreground in front of four shinobi in beige outfits and cloth headwear.
The hourglass headband and the fan carried on her back: Temari is first and foremost a kunoichi of Sunagakure.

The Mistress of the Wind

Temari's fighting style rests entirely on Wind Release (Fūton) and on distance. Her signature weapon: a huge iron war fan (tessen) that she unfolds to raise devastating gusts. Three "moons" are drawn on the fan; with each one uncovered, the power of her attacks goes up a notch.

Her most spectacular technique is the summoning of Kamatari, a one-eyed weasel armed with a sickle, called upon through the Sickle Dance (Kuchiyose: Kirikiri Mai). Enough to turn the battlefield into a storm of wind blades — a specialty that makes her one of the best long-range fighters of her generation.

A blonde kunoichi, knees bent on a tree trunk at the bottom of a rocky gorge, unfolds a huge cream-colored fan marked with three purple circles; in the distance, a winged opponent.
The open fan reveals its three "moons": each one uncovered raises the power of the gusts a notch.

Gaara's Big Sister

There is no understanding Temari without her siblings. If Gaara became the jinchuriki of Shukaku, the one-tailed demon, that is no accident: neither Temari nor Kankuro was compatible with the beast. Long frightened by her unstable younger brother, Temari grows closer to him as Gaara changes, to the point of becoming one of his most solid allies when he rises to the post of Kazekage.

At night, in front of cliffs, a red-haired man with a tattoo on his forehead and dark rings under his eyes stands with his arms crossed; on the left of the frame a young blonde woman smiles with her fist raised, on the right a hooded figure with purple face paint; behind them, a crowd of shinobi in green vests.
Gaara surrounded by his own: the Sand Siblings, distant for a long time, end up standing together.

The Chunin Exams and the Duel with Shikamaru

Temari makes her mark from the Chunin Exams onward. In the preliminaries, she crushes Tenten: she neutralizes all of her throwing weapons and traps her in a whirlwind, without a single scratch. In the final round, she faces Shikamaru. The Konoha strategist pins her down with his shadow… then forfeits of his own accord, out of chakra. A fight with no real winner — and yet it is Shikamaru who lands the only promotion to chunin of the year.

In an arena with concrete walls, a blonde kunoichi in a white top stands with a fist on her hip, next to an opponent in a pink top thrown backward over a large closed black fan planted in the ground; dozens of throwing weapons litter the tiled floor.
The preliminaries against Tenten: the throwing weapons fallen to the ground, and Temari standing without a scratch.

From Sunagakure to Konoha

Over the course of the series, Temari becomes a bridge between the two villages: diplomatic liaison officer between Sunagakure and Konoha, she works toward their alliance. During the Fourth Great Ninja War , she serves in the Fourth Division, alongside Shikamaru. A closeness that will end in a love story: Temari marries Shikamaru, settles in Konoha and joins the Nara clan. Together, they have a son, Shikadai, a worthy heir to both of their strong personalities.
