Tailed Beasts
Can an armored turtle be the calmest of the tailed beasts? Isobu, the Sanbi, was born when Hagoromo Otsutsuki divided the chakra of the Ten-Tails, before being sealed inside Yagura. Water Release, waves and whirlpools, Tailed Beast Bomb, a near-impregnable shell: his techniques are reviewed here, with canon and anime details kept clearly apart. Then come his jinchuriki, his capture by the Akatsuki and a clarification about the Fourth Great Ninja War.
Isobu, also called Sanbi, the Three-Tails (三尾, “three tails”), is one of the nine tailed beasts created when the Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki, divided the chakra of the Ten-Tails to preserve the balance of the ninja world. Over the course of the story, he was sealed inside Yagura Karatachi (Fourth Mizukage of Kirigakure) and, briefly, inside Rin Nohara of Konoha — two decisive episodes that shaped entire stretches of the timeline.
Visual Identity: The Armored Turtle and Quiet Strength
Isobu appears as a huge turtle bristling with spikes, with a beak and three tails. His shell is segmented and gives him one of the best natural defenses among the tailed beasts. In water — his favorite terrain — he moves fast, can curl into a ball to ram and uses the environment to smother the enemy's initiative.
Symbolism. His design draws on aquatic mythology (lake and sea creatures from Japanese folklore). That imagery underlines what Isobu stands for: patience, resilience and a defensive power rather than a showy one.

Powers & Techniques (Canon + Anime Details)
- Water Release affinity (Suiton): generation of massive waves, whirlpools, water jets and water projectiles.
- Tailed Beast Bomb (Bijudama): the iconic energy orb of the tailed beasts, with devastating power.
- Mobility / terrain control: underwater, Isobu speeds up, rams and creates environments that work against his opponent.
- Shell & mass: exceptional protection and formidable physical impact on contact.
- Regeneration & endurance: immense chakra reserves, plus the recovery and longevity typical of the tailed beasts.
- Coral (attributed in the anime, mainly through Yagura): coral generation useful for hindering or pinning down the target.
Good to know: some of Isobu's most spectacular techniques belong mainly to the anime (extended arcs). The manga puts the emphasis above all on his Water Release, his defense and the Tailed Beast Bomb. So we avoid attributing to the Sanbi any named jutsu that the manga canon does not confirm.

Known Jinchuriki & Turning Points
Rin Nohara (Konoha) — Kirigakure's Scheme
Rin is forced by Kirigakure to host Isobu so that she can serve as a living bomb meant to unleash the beast in the heart of Konoha. Aware of the trap, she chooses sacrifice by deliberately throwing herself onto the Chidori wielded by Kakashi, a tragic event that would traumatize Obito and have major repercussions on the rest of the story.
Yagura Karatachi (Kirigakure) — The “Perfect Jinchuriki”
Yagura has perfect mastery over Isobu, to the point of using his partial/full forms in combat. He is, however, manipulated by Obito (posing as “Madara”) through the Sharingan, a period that fed the village's reputation as the “Bloody Mist”. After the death of Yagura, Isobu roams in the wild for a time before being captured by the Akatsuki (in the manga, subdued by Deidara and Tobi).

Akatsuki & Sealing: From Capture to Exploitation
Once he is subdued, the Akatsuki seals Isobu inside the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path (Gedo Mazo) to fuel its plan, just like the other tailed beasts. This temporarily deprives Kirigakure of “its” tailed beast and deepens the geopolitical imbalance the organization is aiming for.

The Fourth Great Ninja War: Canon Clarification
- It is not Isobu who is reanimated by Edo Tensei: it is the deceased jinchuriki (including Yagura) whom Kabuto brings back.
- Tobi/Obito then controls these reanimated hosts through chakra receivers and the Rinnegan, forcing their full transformations in order to pit their tailed beasts against Naruto and Killer Bee.
- Isobu takes part in the collective clashes of the tailed beasts; later, he is briefly freed when the Allied Shinobi Forces extract the tailed beasts from Obito, before being used as a tool again in the final arcs.

Themes & Narrative Impact
- Power & exploitation: Isobu illustrates the use of the tailed beasts as weapons and the wavering ethics of the villages.
- The loneliness of the jinchuriki: from Rin to Yagura, his hosts endure manipulation and rejection — a mirror of the arcs of Gaara and Naruto.
- Reconciliation: like the other beasts, Isobu eventually acknowledges the role of Naruto in the legacy of the Sage of the Six Paths, opening the way to a coexistence that is less violent.

Isobu in Games & Fan Culture
Isobu appears in many games (the Ultimate Ninja Storm series, mobile titles, and more) and remains popular for his armored turtle design, his aquatic power and his place in the arc of Rin/Yagura. Fan art, cosplays and fan theories keep his profile high.
