CharacterRootKabuto

Kabuto killed her without recognizing her, and recognized her just afterward. Nono Yakushi ran the orphanage where he grew up, after taking him in as a child, amnesiac and wounded in the head. A former Root Anbu, she is sent back into the field by Danzo's blackmail, when he is in fact arranging the mutual elimination of his two best spies. This profile sets straight who had lost their memory — and who recognized whom.

He killed her without knowing who she was — and recognized her just afterward. Nono Yakushi is the woman Kabuto called "Mother", and her death is the event that fractured his identity forever. A story that is almost always retold the wrong way around.

The "Mother" of the Orphanage

Nono Yakushi ran the orphanage where Kabuto grew up. The children called her "Mother" — an affectionate nickname, not a religious title.

Behind the gentle woman lies a heavy past: a former Root Anbu under Danzo, she was one of his best intelligence gatherers, before she left the organization.

Who Had Lost Their Memory?

This is the most widespread confusion about this character: the amnesiac in the story is Kabuto, not Nono. She finds him as a child, severely wounded in the head amid the ruins of a destroyed city, unable to remember even his own name.

She treats him, brings him back, and the orphanage gives him a name. Nono, for her part, has her memory intact — which makes what follows even crueler.

Danzo's Trap

Danzo shows up at the orphanage and blackmails Nono: she must return to duty for an infiltration mission in Iwagakure, or he cuts off the funding. He also announces that he will take a child — and it is Kabuto who volunteers, of his own accord.

The real trap comes afterward. Judging that his two best spies knew too much, Danzo arranges their mutual elimination: falsified photographs on one side, a promise on the other.

The Tragedy at Iwagakure

At Iwagakure, Kabuto's cover is blown. The woman he takes for a village ninja attacks him, and he strikes her down with a chakra scalpel.

The failure to recognize is one-sided: she does not recognize him, he recognizes her — but only after he has mortally wounded her. He then has time to try to heal her, in vain.

What Her Death Broke

This tragedy is the founding event of Kabuto's identity crisis. The nameless child, taken in by a woman who did not recognize him at the end, would spend his life borrowing the identities of others.

The story is told in flashback during his fight against Itachi and Sasuke — and it casts a chilling light on the role of Danzo, as well as that of Orochimaru , in his making.

FAQ

  • Did Nono Yakushi lose her memory?
No — this is the most widespread confusion about this character. The amnesiac in this story is Kabuto: Nono finds him as a child, severely wounded in the head amid the ruins of a destroyed city, unable to remember even his own name. Nono, for her part, has her memory intact.
  • Who killed Nono, and who recognized whom?
It is Kabuto who deals her the fatal wound, with a chakra scalpel, without knowing who he is fighting: his spy cover had just been blown, and the woman he takes for a village ninja attacks him. He recognizes her only after striking her down, and then tries in vain to heal her. The failure to recognize is one-sided.
  • Was it Nono who recruited Kabuto as a spy?
No. Danzo shows up at the orphanage and blackmails Nono: she must return to duty for an infiltration mission in Iwagakure, or he cuts off the orphanage's funding. He then announces that he will also take a child — and it is Kabuto who volunteers of his own accord.
  • What exact role did Danzo play in this trap?
The trap is his doing. Judging that his two best spies knew too much to stay alive, he arranged their mutual elimination, manipulating each without the other's knowledge. Neither Nono nor Kabuto could guess who stood before them.
  • Where can you see this story?
It is told in full in the manga, in flashback, during Kabuto's fight against Itachi and Sasuke. The anime adapts it faithfully, essentially within a single episode devoted to Kabuto.

In summary

Nono Yakushi is the ghost that haunts Kabuto's entire character: the only person who ever gave him a name, and the one he killed without seeing her. Danzo did not need to kill either of them — he only had to set them face to face and blind them both. It may well be the coldest maneuver in the whole saga.
