It is applied with a bite, and it steals the soul as much as it grants strength. The Curse Mark multiplies strength, speed and chakra tenfold, but it remains a coercive juinjutsu: an enzyme drawn from Jugo's body, Orochimaru's senjutsu chakra and a fragment of his consciousness. This feature details its two levels, from spreading flame-shaped marks to the full transformation, the master's hold over his bearers, and their fates, from Sasuke to Kimimaro by way of Anko, the only survivor of the first ten trials.
The mark that grants power and steals the soul: applied with a bite, it corrupted Sasuke and so many others. This is Orochimaru's Curse Mark.

A Mark of Power
The Curse Mark is a juinjutsu — a cursed seal — that Orochimaru most often applies by biting the neck of his target.
Once active, it multiplies strength, speed and chakra reserves tenfold. But this power is not a true Sage Mode: it is imperfect senjutsu chakra, injected by force, at the price of pain and enslavement.

The Origin in Jugo's Body
Its origin is chilling: Orochimaru isolated an enzyme from the body of Jugo, whose fluids react to natural energy, then combined it with his own chakra.
Compatibility is very low — on the order of 1 in 10. Incompatible bodies die on application. Anko was the only survivor of the first ten trials.

The Two Levels
The seal has two states. At level 1, black flame-shaped marks spread across the body, for a moderate gain and constant pain.
At level 2, it becomes a full transformation: for Sasuke, gray skin, lengthened hair, a large webbed hand on his back and a star-shaped mark on his nose, his eyes keeping the red three-tomoe Sharingan — for tenfold power but severe exhaustion.

Orochimaru's Hold
The real danger lies elsewhere. The seal holds a fragment of the consciousness of Orochimaru: it stirs up the bearer's dark impulses and serves as a door for him to manifest or to be reborn.
It can be contained: the Evil Sealing Method of Kakashi keeps it temporarily in check. But in Sasuke's case, it only disappears during the fight against Itachi, when the latter seals away Orochimaru himself.

The Bearers
The two most powerful seals are the Curse Mark of Heaven (Sasuke, Anko) and the Curse Mark of Earth (Kimimaro).
The Sound Four carry weaker ones. One last landmark: the juinjutsu of the Hyuga clan, the Caged Bird Seal, is another cursed seal — but completely unrelated to Orochimaru.

FAQ
-
What is the Curse Mark made of?Of three elements: an enzyme isolated from Jugo's fluids (whose body absorbs natural energy), Orochimaru's senjutsu chakra, and a fragment of his own consciousness. Orochimaru most often applies it by biting the target's neck.
-
Why do so few bearers survive?Compatibility is very low, on the order of 1 in 10: incompatible bodies die when the mark is applied. Anko Mitarashi was the only survivor of the first ten test subjects, which is precisely what established this fact.
-
What is the difference between level 1 and level 2?At level 1, black flame-shaped marks spread across the body (moderate gain, constant pain). At level 2, the body transforms entirely (in Sasuke's case: gray skin, yellow irises, black sclera) for far greater power, at the cost of severe exhaustion.
-
How do you neutralize a Curse Mark?Kakashi's Evil Sealing Method contains it temporarily — without removing it. In Sasuke's case, definitive removal comes during the duel against Itachi, who extracts and imprisons Orochimaru, erasing the mark in the same stroke.
-
Is the Hyuga Caged Bird Seal the same thing? No. It is also a juinjutsu, but completely independent of Orochimaru: it protects the Byakugan and punishes the branch house, with no transformation and no gain in power. Only the term "juinjutsu" connects them.
In summary
A Faustian pact carved into flesh, the Curse Mark sums up Orochimaru's whole method: offer power the better to enslave. It took an entire Uchiha clan to free Sasuke from it.
