To be born into the wrong branch, and to bear a seal for life. Among the Hyuga, the Main House rules and is never marked; the Branch House serves, protects, and bears the Caged Bird Seal, which inflicts pain or death with a single hand sign and seals the Byakugan. That same Byakugan grants near-360-degree vision, with a blind spot at the nape of the neck. The Gentle Fist strikes the tenketsu to block chakra, and the Hyuga Affair recalls the price paid by the branch family.

Konoha's most noble clan, guardian of the Byakugan and torn apart by a merciless hierarchy: this is the Hyuga clan, caught between a main house and an enslaved branch.

The Clan of the Byakugan

Every member of the Hyuga clan is born with the Byakugan, a hereditary dojutsu that grants vision at nearly 360°, chakra perception, and sight through solid bodies.

Beware a common misconception: this vision is not perfect. The Byakugan keeps a blind spot at the base of the neck, a very real weakness to exploit in combat.

According to the movie The Last: Naruto the Movie, the clan is said to descend from Hamura Otsutsuki, one of the sons of Kaguya who stayed behind to watch over the Moon.

The sphere represents the Byakugan's field of vision; the cone leaving it marks the blind spot that remains at the base of the neck.

The Main House and the Branch House

The clan is split into two houses. The Main House, the Souke, leads the clan and carries the heir's bloodline. The Branch House, the Bunke, serves it and protects the secret of the Byakugan.

It is this rigid division that creates the whole tragedy of the clan: you are born into the Main House or the Branch House, and that status sometimes comes down to a few moments at birth.

Branch House members are recognizable at a glance by their marked forehead: status is visible, and it is set at birth.

The Caged Bird Seal

The forehead of every Branch House member bears the Caged Bird Seal. It serves two very distinct functions.

First, it enslaves the Branch House: with a single hand sign, a member of the Main House can inflict excruciating pain, or even death. Second, it seals the Byakugan when the bearer dies, so that no enemy can steal the dojutsu.

The seal's first function: triggered from a distance, it doubles the bearer over in pain without a single blow being struck.

The Gentle Fist

The clan's fighting style is the Gentle Fist (Juken), a taijutsu that relies on the Byakugan: the fighter strikes the opponent's chakra points to block their flow.

Its most famous defensive technique, the Rotation, was a secret held by the main house alone. Neji, a member of Team Guy and yet born into the branch family, learned it by simple observation — a mark of his genius.

A fighter with long brown hair and a black ninja headband strikes point-blank at the chest of a ninja in an orange tracksuit, who winces and staggers back on dirt ground
The Juken is fought at close quarters: the hand barely touches, but it targets the chakra points beneath the skin.

The Hyuga Affair

The Hyuga Affair shows the full cruelty of the system. On the third birthday of Hinata, an envoy from Kumogakure tries to abduct her to steal the Byakugan; her father Hiashi kills him.

Kumogakure then demands Hiashi's head. It is his twin brother Hizashi, of the Branch House and Neji's father, who volunteers and dies in his place — his seal sealing his Byakugan. Much later, Neji too will fall a hero, during the Fourth Great Ninja War, protecting Naruto and Hinata.

The Kumogakure envoy is received on an official visit to Konoha: the whole affair begins with that arrival.

FAQ

  • What is the difference between the Souke and the Bunke?
The Souke is the Main House: it leads the clan and holds the heir's bloodline. The Bunke is the Branch House, tasked with serving the main house and protecting the secret of the Byakugan. Only members of the Bunke are marked with the Caged Bird Seal.
  • What is the Caged Bird Seal for?
It has a double role: to subdue the Branch House — a member of the Main House can, with a single hand sign, inflict excruciating pain or even death — and to seal the Byakugan when the bearer dies, so that no enemy can steal the clan's dojutsu.
  • What is the Hyuga Affair?
On Hinata's 3rd birthday, an envoy from Kumogakure tries to abduct her to seize the Byakugan; Hiashi kills him. Kumogakure then demands Hiashi's head. It is his twin Hizashi, of the Branch House and Neji's father, who is sacrificed in his place, his seal sealing his Byakugan.
  • Why did Neji resent the main house?
Because his father Hizashi, of the Bunke, was sacrificed in place of Hiashi, head of the Souke. Neji long believed the branch family had been handed over by force, before learning that his father had in fact volunteered out of love for his twin brother.
  • Does the Byakugan have a weakness?
Yes: despite its near-360° field of vision, it has a blind spot at the base of the neck. That blind spot is an exploitable weakness in combat — and it is precisely what the Rotation is meant to cover on defense.

In summary

Nobility and servitude under one roof: the Hyuga clan is the clan of a legendary eye and an intimate wound, whose two faces are embodied by Neji and Hinata.
