A guardian deity born from the chakra of a single man. Susanoo is neither a summon nor a Tailed Beast: it is the wielder's own chakra taking shape, provided the Mangekyo Sharingan is awakened and active in both eyes. Ribs, skeleton, muscles, armor, then the full colossus: the rise in power reads form by form. Along the way, Itachi's Sword of Totsuka and Yata Mirror, and the list of wielders, from Madara to Kakashi.
A chakra armor the size of a mountain. Susanoo is the ultimate technique of the Mangekyo Sharingan: a spectral warrior that surrounds its summoner like a guardian deity. Here is everything you need to know.

A Two-Eyed Technique
Susanoo is the ultimate technique of the Mangekyo Sharingan, and it comes with a strict condition: the Mangekyo must be awakened and active in both eyes. One eye alone is not enough.
The claim that "it comes after Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu" in fact describes the special case of Itachi — Sasuke, for his part, never had Tsukuyomi yet does possess Susanoo.
Not a Summon
Beware the common misconception: Susanoo is not a summon, nor a Tailed Beast. It is the wielder's own chakra taking shape around him.
No outside creature is called forth: the colossus is a projection of its user's energy, which is why it drains him so heavily.

The Growing Forms
Susanoo is built in stages: first a rib cage, then a skeleton, then flesh and muscle, then armor — up to the Complete Susanoo, a titanic colossus.
The complete body is normally reserved for the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Madara presents the first one in the series; Kakashi is the exception, thanks to the Six Paths chakra drawn from the Ten-Tails.

Itachi's Weapons
Itachi's Susanoo wields two spiritual tools that are his alone. The Sword of Totsuka draws any target it pierces into a sake jar, sealing it for eternity in a genjutsu. The Yata Mirror reflects or nullifies any attack whatsoever.
They must never be credited to the others: Sasuke has his own arsenal — a bow-shield, arrows, a sword, and the black flames of Amaterasu into which he channels the Chidori.

The Wielders
In the manga, the wielders of Susanoo are Itachi, Sasuke, Madara (and Indra in flashback), plus Kakashi on a temporary basis during the Fourth Great Ninja War.
Conversely, Obito and Hagoromo never used a Susanoo — they must not be counted among the wielders, despite their power.

Summary Table
| Aspect | Details |

| Nature | A construct of the wielder's chakra (NOT a summon or a Tailed Beast): a humanoid guardian colossus granted by the Mangekyo Sharingan. |
| Requirement | Mangekyo awakened and active in BOTH eyes; the "ultimate" technique of the Mangekyo Sharingan. One eye alone is not enough. |
| Growing forms | Ribs → skeleton → flesh/muscle → armor → complete body (colossus). The complete body is normally tied to the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan (Kakashi = exception via Six Paths chakra). |
| Wielders | Manga: Itachi, Sasuke, Madara (1st complete body in the series), Indra (flashback); Kakashi temporarily. Obito and Hagoromo never had one. |
| Weapons & color | Itachi ONLY: Sword of Totsuka (seals) + Yata Mirror (reflects). Sasuke: bow-shield, arrows, Amaterasu/Enton. Color varies: red (Itachi), indigo (Sasuke). |
FAQ
-
Does Susanoo require one Mangekyo eye or both? Both. Susanoo is the ultimate technique of the Mangekyo Sharingan and appears only if the Mangekyo is awakened and active in both eyes; one eye alone is not enough. The claim that "it comes after Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu" describes the special case of Itachi — Sasuke, for example, never had Tsukuyomi.
-
Is Susanoo a summon? No. It is a colossal armor made of the wielder's own chakra, which surrounds and protects him like a guardian deity. No outside creature is called forth and it is not a Tailed Beast: it is the user's chakra taking shape.
-
What are the weapons of Itachi's Susanoo? Two spiritual tools that belong to Itachi alone. The Sword of Totsuka: any target it pierces is drawn into a sake jar and sealed for eternity in a genjutsu. The Yata Mirror: it reflects or nullifies any attack whatsoever, physical, elemental, or spiritual. Combined, they make his Susanoo nearly invincible.
-
Does Sasuke have the same weapons as Itachi? No. Sasuke has his own arsenal: a chakra bow that also serves as a shield, arrows and a sword, with the black flames of Amaterasu that he shapes through Blaze Release (Enton) and into which he channels the Chidori. He inherits neither the Sword of Totsuka nor the Yata Mirror — the opposite idea comes from an anime error, corrected since.
-
Did Kakashi really have a Susanoo?Yes, but only temporarily, during the Fourth Great Ninja War. After his death, Obito's spirit passes on his two Mangekyo Sharingan boosted with Six Paths chakra, which lets him manifest a complete Susanoo armed with Kamui shuriken. It is an exceptional case — the complete body is normally tied to the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan — and the power disappears once Obito is gone.
In summary
Susanoo is the summit of Uchiha power: a god of chakra deployed only at the cost of both eyes and colossal reserves. From Itachi's rib cage to Madara's titan, it gives every Mangekyo duel its legendary scale — that of giants clashing.
