Write your name in your own blood, and the world answers. The summoning contract, its hand signs and the palm pressed to the ground open the door to giant toads, colossal snakes and titanic slugs. The Legendary Sannin divide these animals among themselves in a three-way deadlock, and each one points to a sage world: Mount Myoboku, Ryuchi Cave, Shikkotsu Forest. Fukasaku and Shima teach Sage Mode there, Gamabunta waits for Naruto there, and Edo Tensei holds its own place as a summoning apart.

Giant toads, colossal snakes, titanic slugs: here are the summons in Naruto, the blood contract that binds them to ninja, and the birthplace of Sage Mode.

The Blood Contract

The Summoning Jutsu (Kuchiyose) is a space-time ninjutsu: it teleports a creature bound by contract to the ninja's side.

The prerequisite: signing a blood contract. The ninja writes his name in his own blood on a scroll, then runs through a series of hand signs before pressing his palm to the ground. The more chakra he invests, the larger the summoned creature.

The Summons of the Legendary Sannin

The trio of Sannin illustrates the system perfectly, like a game of rock-paper-scissors: Jiraiya summons the toads, Orochimaru the snakes, Tsunade the slugs.

The snake swallows the toad, the slug dissolves the snake, the toad gulps down the slug: a three-way deadlock in perfect balance.

Three Sage Worlds

Each species has its own sage world: Mount Myoboku for the toads, Ryuchi Cave for the snakes, Shikkotsu Forest for the slugs.

Beware of a common confusion: the snakes do not live at Mount Myoboku, but at Ryuchi Cave. These sanctuaries are where ninja are taught Sage Mode.

Ryuchi Cave, the world of the snakes: this is where they live, and not at Mount Myoboku.

Mount Myoboku and the Toads

Mount Myoboku is the world of the toads, reached through a reverse summoning. Its sage figures are Fukasaku and Shima, the Two Great Sage Toads, who teach senjutsu.

They are the ones who trained Jiraiya, then Naruto. But Jiraiya never reached a perfect Sage Mode: Fukasaku and Shima had to attach themselves to his shoulders to channel natural energy in his place.

Naruto and Gamabunta

Naruto signs the toad contract under Jiraiya's guidance. His first attempts produce nothing but tiny tadpoles.

He summons Gamabunta, the chief toad, for the first time by drawing on the chakra of Kurama — after Jiraiya threw him down to the bottom of a gorge. Gamabunta, the partner of Jiraiya and of Minato, does not recognize him as his master at first, either.

Gamabunta, the chief toad: Naruto only manages it at the bottom of the gorge, by drawing on the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra.

Edo Tensei, a Summoning Apart

Surprise:Edo Tensei is also a summoning — its full name begins with "Kuchiyose." It is a summoning that calls back the soul of a dead person.

Created by Tobirama and then perfected by Kabuto, this forbidden technique binds the soul of the deceased to a living sacrifice. On the snake side, Sasuke inherits Orochimaru's contract, while the slug Katsuyu passes from Tsunade to Sakura.

FAQ

  • How does the Summoning Jutsu work?
It is a space-time ninjutsu. After signing a blood contract with a species, the ninja forms a series of hand signs, offers a little blood and places his hand on the ground to teleport the animal to his side. The more chakra he invests, the larger the summoned creature.
  • What are the summons of the Legendary Sannin?
Jiraiya summons the toads of Mount Myoboku, Orochimaru the snakes and Tsunade the slugs. This trio forms a "three-way deadlock" like rock-paper-scissors: the snake eats the toad, the slug dissolves the snake, and the toad swallows the slug.
  • Who teaches Sage Mode at Mount Myoboku?
Fukasaku and his wife Shima, "the Two Great Sage Toads." They trained Jiraiya and then Naruto. Careful: the snakes live at Ryuchi Cave, and the slugs at Shikkotsu Forest — not at Mount Myoboku.
  • How did Naruto summon Gamabunta?
During his training with Jiraiya, his attempts produced only small toads. Jiraiya then threw him down to the bottom of a gorge: in danger, Naruto drew on Kurama's chakra and summoned Gamabunta. Note: the chief toad does not recognize him as his master at first.
  • Why is Edo Tensei a summoning?
Its full name begins with "Kuchiyose": it is a summoning that calls back the soul of a dead person. Created by Tobirama Senju, it is a forbidden technique that binds the soul of the deceased to a living sacrifice. Orochimaru and then Kabuto perfected it.

In summary

From the tiniest tadpole to the titanic Gamabunta, summoning tells the whole story of Naruto: a blood pact, a demanding apprenticeship, and legendary creatures that decide the outcome of the greatest battles.
