The Uchiha Clan Massacre: The Night That Broke Sasuke

UniverseItachiUchiha

In one night, an entire clan is wiped out. Itachi wipes out almost every Uchiha in Konoha and spares only his little brother. Behind the act lies a real coup prepared by Fugaku against a backdrop of discrimination after the Nine-Tails attack, the death of Shisui as the trigger, and an order from above: Danzo and the advisors Homura and Koharu, facing a reluctant Hiruzen. Then there is the accomplice in the shadows, Obito disguised as Madara, and a truth that will not come out until much later.

The most tragic night in Naruto, the one that forged Sasuke's thirst for revenge: in a matter of hours, Itachi wipes out his entire clan. But the truth is far darker than it appears.

One Night, One Clan Wiped Out

In a single night, Itachi Uchiha wipes out nearly all of the Uchiha clan of Konoha. Only one is spared: his little brother Sasuke.

The canon sums it up as “the whole clan except three ”: Itachi the executioner, Sasuke the one spared, and a third man acting in the shadows that night.

A single night is enough: the Uchiha district is emptied of its inhabitants, except for the executioner's little brother.

The Uchiha Coup

The tragedy has its roots in the Nine-Tailed Fox attack on Konoha. The village suspects the Uchiha — whose Sharingan can control the Nine-Tailed Fox — and pushes them aside, under surveillance.

This resentment feeds a very real plan: led by Fugaku, the clan head and Itachi's father, the Uchiha prepare a coup to seize control of Konoha.

The Trigger: The Death of Shisui

Itachi's best friend, Shisui, planned to stop the coup peacefully with his Kotoamatsukami, a powerful genjutsu.

But Danzo stole his right eye. In despair, Shisui entrusted his left eye to Itachi and then took his own life — a shock that awakened the Mangekyo Sharingan of the young man.

The Order From Konoha

Here is the heart of the tragedy: the order does not come from Itachi. With the negotiations having failed, Danzo — backed by the advisors Homura and Koharu — decides to exterminate the clan to prevent a civil war.

The Third Hokage, Hiruzen, was nevertheless opposed to it and sought peace to the very end. Danzo offers Itachi an agonizing choice: let the coup break out — and see the whole clan perish, Sasuke included — or strike first, in which case Sasuke would be spared.

Itachi's Accomplice

Itachi could not wipe out an entire clan alone in one night. He allied himself with Obito, then masked under the identity of Madara — the real Madara having been dead for a long time.

Obito took charge of the Military Police Force run by the Uchiha in particular. Itachi, for his part, killed his own parents, Fugaku and Mikoto, last — they accepted their fate and entrusted Sasuke to him.

The Truth Revealed

Unable to kill his brother, Itachi spared him, put him under a genjutsu, and ordered him to hate him. He hid his true motives behind a lie: that he had killed the clan to measure his own power.

The truth — that Itachi was a hero who acted out of love for his village and his brother — does not come out until much later: first through Obito after Itachi's death, then confirmed by Itachi himself, reanimated by the Edo Tensei during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

The truth only comes out after his death, then from his own mouth once he is reanimated by the Edo Tensei.

FAQ

  • Why did Itachi massacre the Uchiha clan?
On the orders of Konoha's leadership (Danzo, backed by the advisors Homura and Koharu), in order to prevent a real coup by the clan that would have triggered a civil war. Itachi accepted to avoid the bloodshed and save his brother: it was neither a personal choice nor an act of madness or lust for power.
  • Who helped Itachi on the night of the massacre?
Obito, then masked under the identity of “Madara” (the real Madara was already dead). Itachi could not eliminate the whole clan alone in one night; Obito helped him — notably against the Military Police Force run by the Uchiha.
  • Why did Itachi spare Sasuke?
Out of brotherly love: he could not bring himself to kill him. Danzo had agreed to spare Sasuke if Itachi carried out the massacre. Itachi then lied to him about his motives to steer him toward revenge, while secretly protecting him.
  • What role did Shisui play?
Shisui, Itachi's best friend, wanted to stop the coup with his Kotoamatsukami. Danzo stole his right eye; in despair, Shisui entrusted his left eye to Itachi and took his own life. That tragedy awakened Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan and hastened Konoha's final decision.
  • When was the truth revealed?
Long after the massacre: first by Obito to Sasuke just after Itachi's death, then confirmed by Itachi himself, reanimated via the Edo Tensei during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Until then, Itachi was seen as a traitor who had killed his own out of lust for power.

In summary

The Uchiha clan massacre is not the crime of a monster but the sacrifice of a brother: the founding tragedy of Naruto, where the greatest apparent traitor was in reality the most loyal of heroes.
