1585 words | Reading time: 8 min

Tailed Beast

Mito, Kushina, Naruto: the nine-tailed fox has spanned three generations. Kurama, the Nine-Tails, was born from the chakra of the Ten-Tails shaped by Hagoromo. The article revisits what really happened during the attack on Konoha, his key abilities, including the Tailed Beast Bomb (Bijudama) and the sensing of negative emotions, then the shift from a forced coexistence to a genuine symbiosis with Naruto. Forms, transformations and canon terminology are clarified, including the Boruto: Two Blue Vortex update, up to the manifestation linked to Himawari.

2025 update: incorporating the events of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.

Origins and Identity

Kurama, better known as the Nine-Tailed Fox, is one of the nine tailed beasts created by Hagoromo Otsutsuki (the Sage of the Six Paths) from the chakra of the Ten-Tails (Jubi). In Japanese he is often referred to as Kyūbi no Yōko (九尾の妖狐), literally "nine-tailed demon fox". Kurama is the proper name of the tailed beast — it is not a translation of "nine llamas".

The nine tailed beasts all come from one and the same chakra, that of the Ten-Tails, and are told apart by their number of tails: nine for Kurama.

The Attack on Konoha: What Really Happened?

During the attack on the Hidden Leaf Village, Obito Uchiha (under the alias "Tobi") extracts Kurama from Kushina, brings him under his control through the Sharingan and hurls him at Konoha. Minato manages to free Kurama using the Contract Seal (契約封印, Keiyaku Fūin), which cancels the forced summoning contract set up by Obito. He ends up sealing Kurama inside his son, Naruto Uzumaki.

Brought under control by Obito, Kurama ravages Konoha until Minato breaks the hold with the Contract Seal.

Appearance and Key Abilities

  • Colossal chakra: immense reserves providing raw power and very high-level techniques.
  • Tailed Beast Bomb (Bijudama): an extremely destructive sphere of energy, the signature of the tailed beasts.
  • Negative emotion sensing: Kurama (and Naruto in Nine-Tails mode) can feel the malice/hostility around him, a unique sensory ability.
  • Regeneration / endurance: as a chakra entity, Kurama takes hits and recovers exceptionally well, and the jinchuriki benefits from accelerated healing.

Nine tails and immense chakra reserves: Kurama's power rests first of all on that raw volume.

Naruto & Kurama: From Forced Coexistence to Symbiosis

Their relationship begins in mistrust, then changes when Naruto chooses empathy over domination. Kurama recognizes Naruto's determination and cooperates: this is the emotional heart of the work. Naruto did not, however, win that cooperation on his own: he had the invaluable help of Killer Bee and the encouragement of Kushina during his inner battle against the Nine-Tails.

Cooperation comes neither from the seal nor from force: Kurama grants it when Naruto chooses empathy.

Forms and Transformations (Canon Terminology)

Nine-Tails Chakra Mode (KCM)
Golden chakra cloak that synchronizes Naruto's chakra with Kurama's for a massive boost in speed, power and perception.
Tailed Beast Mode (Bijū Mode)
Manifestation of Kurama's avatar in chakra, up to the full transformation into a nine-tailed fox controlled by Naruto.
Baryon Mode
A "combustion" fusion of the chakras of Naruto and Kurama, multiplying the power tenfold but consuming Kurama's life. Used against Isshiki Otsutsuki.
A golden chakra silhouette sitting cross-legged above a forest, nine flame-shaped appendages fanned out behind it
Bijū Mode gives the chakra the shape of the avatar, before the full transformation into the fox.

Narrative Impact

Kurama is a major plot engine: he explains Naruto's isolation, catalyzes his quest for recognition and embodies the theme of self-acceptance (taming one's dark side).

Kurama in Boruto: Disappearance… Then Return

In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kurama disappears after the use of Baryon Mode against Isshiki (anime ep. 218 / manga ch. 55).
Latest development (2024–2025): in the Two Blue Vortex arc, we learn of Kurama's return through Himawari Uzumaki, where the tailed beast manifests and cooperates with her.

This arc, marked by the supposed sacrifice of the Baryon Mode, has also revived the speculation about Naruto's death.

After the use of Baryon Mode against Isshiki, Kurama fades away.

Related Techniques (Selection)

  • Tailed Beast Bomb and variants combined with the Rasengan/Rasenshuriken used by Naruto.
  • Chakra arms and extensions for close combat and protection.
  • Negative emotion perception (a unique hostility sensor).

Note: I avoid non-canon or poorly attested names ("Kurama shadow clone", etc.).

The tailed beast's chakra carries Naruto's spheres to a scale he would not reach on his own.

Why Kurama Remains Unforgettable

Kurama embodies redemption, friendship and the strength born of mutual acceptance. His arc — from antagonist to partner — makes him one of the most memorable figures in Naruto, and his influence lives on in Boruto.
