ClanYamanaka
Winning a fight without landing a single blow. The Yamanaka step into their opponent's mind and make him raise a hand against his own. Their knowledge is a hiden that is taught, never a kekkei genkai: no bloodline required. The Mind Body Switch Jutsu comes at a price, the caster's body is left inert and the damage carries over, whereas the Mind Body Disturbance Jutsu leaves him inside his own body to steer the target through her nervous system. Add to that the telepathy of the Allied Shinobi Forces and, more discreetly, Inoichi's flower shop.
The clan that wins a fight without landing a blow: stepping into the enemy's mind and making him raise a hand against his own. Meet the Yamanaka.

A hiden, not a kekkei genkai
Like their allies, the Yamanaka have no bloodline ability. Their mind techniques are hiden: clan secrets that are taught.
Nothing to do, then, with the Sharingan or the Byakugan, which are passed down genetically. Historically, the clan provides Konoha with its intelligence, its espionage and its interrogations.

The Mind Body Switch Jutsu and its double weakness
The signature technique projects the caster's mind out of his body, into that of the target, to supplant the consciousness there.
But it comes at a steep price. The caster's body is left inert and defenseless — and, a detail often forgotten, the damage taken by the possessed body carries over to his real body. The projected mind travels slowly, in a straight line: the technique can be dodged. Hence its rule of use — a motionless target.

The Mind Body Disturbance Jutsu
This is precisely the flaw corrected by the Mind Body Disturbance Jutsu: the caster does not leave his body. He sends his chakra into the nervous system of the target and steers her movements from a distance.
The victim stays conscious and watches her own body act without understanding. Inoichi uses it during the invasion of Konoha to turn the attackers against one another. Not to be confused with the Mind Body Switch Dance, its mass version.

The telepathy of the Allied Shinobi Forces
The clan has another weapon, decisive on the scale of a war: a telepathy that links not only the caster to the others, but the connected minds to each other.
It carries thoughts, but also images and emotions. The more minds are connected, the stronger the physical strain on the relay. That is how an order reaches an entire army instantly during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Inoichi and the flower shop
Inoichi, the head of the clan, runs intelligence for the Allied Shinobi Forces. His death is often misplaced: he does not die during Pain's assault — what is destroyed there is the clan's flower shop.
He falls during the Fourth Great Ninja War, at headquarters, blown away by the Ten-Tails — at the same moment as Shikaku, in the same explosion. The two brains of the Allied Shinobi Forces together: Madara was aiming for the "head." Shikaku has time to pass one last plan on to all the troops, through Inoichi's telepathy. Ino will then take over.

FAQ
-
Are the Yamanaka techniques a kekkei genkai? No, that is a common misreading. They are hiden: clan secrets that are taught, with no genetic prerequisite. The first databook actually lists the Mind Body Switch Jutsu as a plain C-rank ninjutsu in the "supplementary" category, without the slightest mention of heredity.
-
What is the difference between the Mind Body Switch Jutsu and the Mind Body Disturbance Jutsu? It is radical. With the Mind Body Switch Jutsu, the mind leaves the body to supplant that of the target — and the caster's body is left inert. With the Mind Body Disturbance Jutsu, the caster does not move: he sends his chakra into the target's nervous system and steers her movements, the victim staying conscious but dispossessed.
-
What is the real weakness of the Mind Body Switch Jutsu? It is twofold, and the databook says so in black and white. First, the caster's body is defenseless for the whole duration. Second — and this is often forgotten — the damage taken by the possessed body carries over to his real body. Possessing an opponent means taking what he takes. And the projected mind travels slowly, in a straight line: the technique can be dodged.
-
How does the formation with the Nara and the Akimichi really work? The opposite of what its name suggests. The name comes from the hanafuda card game (boar, deer, butterfly): it is not an order of maneuver. In the field, it is the Nara's shadow that pins the target first — only then does the Mind Body Switch Jutsu, which requires a motionless target, become possible. The Akimichi strikes afterward.
-
When does Inoichi die?During the Fourth Great Ninja War, at the Allied Shinobi Forces headquarters, blown away by the Ten-Tails — at the same moment as Shikaku Nara, in the same explosion. Beware the common misconception: he does not die during Pain's assault. What is destroyed at that point is the clan's flower shop.
In summary
Florists and spies, the Yamanaka are a reminder that a ninja war is won first in the mind — and that a clan without a dojutsu can hold, all by itself, the nervous system of an entire army.
