Without this quiet art, there would be no Naruto at all. Fuinjutsu binds objects, chakra, souls, or Tailed Beasts to a vessel: it neither destroys nor creates. The guide goes back to the Uzumaki Clan of Uzushiogakure, Mito and Kushina foremost, whose knowledge trained Minato, then breaks down the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style that locks Kurama's Yang half inside the infant Naruto, and the Reaper Death Seal, which costs the life of whoever uses it. It ends on what separates fuinjutsu from juinjutsu.

The Quietest and Most Vital Art in Naruto: without it, no jinchuriki, no summoning scrolls, no Naruto at all. This is fuinjutsu, the art of seals.

The Art of Sealing

Fuinjutsu is the ninja art of sealing: binding and locking away objects, chakra, souls, or Tailed Beasts inside a vessel — a body, an object, or a scroll.

Its purpose is neither to destroy nor to create, but to bind. Nor is it limited to sealing Tailed Beasts: storage scrolls, barrier seals, summoning contracts, and explosive tags are just as much a part of it.

A dome of glowing golden chains closes in the night sky above a forest.
Binding rather than destroying: sealing chains close a barrier here, one of the many forms of fuinjutsu.

The Uzumaki Masters

The Uzumaki Clan, from the vanished village of Uzushiogakure, is its undisputed master. Its mastery of seals was so feared that several allied nations destroyed its village.

In tribute, Konoha still wears the Uzumaki red swirl on its flak jackets. It was from this knowledge that Minato drew his own seals.

Uzushiogakure, the village of the Uzumaki Clan: its mastery of seals worried others enough that several allied nations destroyed it.

The Eight Trigrams Sealing Style

The most famous seal is the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style, the one that locks Kurama inside Naruto.

On the night of the Nine-Tailed Fox's attack, Minato split the beast in two: he sealed the Yang half into the newborn with this seal, leaving in it a gap so that the fox's chakra could mingle with his own. Before him, Mito and then Kushina had carried Kurama — both of them Uzumaki.

The Eight Trigrams Sealing Style keeps Kurama locked inside Naruto, behind a gate sealed with a talisman.

The Reaper Death Seal

The most terrible of all is the Reaper Death Seal (Shiki Fujin). It summons the Shinigami, who tears out the enemy's soul to seal it.

But the price is absolute: the Death God also devours the soul of the user, who always dies. Minato used it against the Nine-Tailed Fox, and Hiruzen against Orochimaru — managing to seal only his arms, for lack of strength.

A huge translucent spectral figure, with spiky white hair, horns, and a blade clenched between its teeth, rises in a night forest above three masked ninja forming a hand sign.
The Reaper Death Seal summons the Shinigami: it tears out the targeted soul, and takes the user's as well.

Fuinjutsu vs. Juinjutsu

Be careful not to confuse the two. Fuinjutsu is an art that is neutral, even noble. Its dark cousin is juinjutsu, the art of cursed seals.

Orochimaru's Curse Mark and the Caged Bird Seal of the Hyuga Clan belong to it: designed not to bind, but to corrupt, enslave, or punish their bearer.

A man kneeling on a wooden floor screams while holding his head, a glowing green seal marked on his forehead.
The Hyuga Caged Bird Seal belongs to juinjutsu: designed not to bind, but to punish and enslave its bearer.

FAQ

  • What is fuinjutsu?
The ninja art of sealing: binding and locking away objects, chakra, souls, or Tailed Beasts inside a body, an object, or a scroll. It serves neither to destroy nor to create, but to bind — and the Uzumaki Clan is its undisputed master.
  • Why is the Reaper Death Seal so feared?
It summons the Shinigami to tear out and seal the enemy's soul — but at the cost of the user's life, whose soul is also devoured and imprisoned forever. Minato and Hiruzen died from it.
  • Did Minato seal all of Kurama inside Naruto?
No. He sealed the Yang half into Naruto with the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style, and the Yin half into himself with the Reaper Death Seal. Naruto only recovers the other half during the Fourth Great Ninja War.
  • What is the difference between fuinjutsu and juinjutsu?
Fuinjutsu is the (neutral) art of sealing; juinjutsu is the art of cursed seals, such as Orochimaru's Curse Mark or the Hyuga Caged Bird Seal, designed to corrupt, enslave, or punish their bearer.
  • Who were Kurama's jinchuriki, and why Uzumaki?
Mito, then Kushina, then Naruto — all from the Uzumaki Clan. Their exceptionally powerful chakra and great vitality made them able to contain the strongest of the nine Tailed Beasts.

In summary

Neither offensive nor spectacular, fuinjutsu is nonetheless the keystone of Naruto: one seal made the hero what he is, and another cost two Hokage their lives to save the village.
