Three families of techniques, and all of ninja combat fits inside them. This guide starts from chakra, the shared foundation, before clearly separating ninjutsu and its very real effects — Rasengan, Chidori, clones, summons —, the genjutsu that clouds the senses like Itachi's Tsukuyomi or Shisui's Kotoamatsukami, and the purely physical taijutsu of the Eight Inner Gates. Kenjutsu, fuinjutsu, medical ninjutsu, senjutsu and the kinjutsu status complete the picture.
All ninja techniques fall into three great families: ninjutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu. Here is the clear guide to these three pillars of combat in Naruto — and to what sets them apart.

Chakra, the Foundation of Every Technique
Chakra is born from kneading together two energies: physical energy (drawn from the body's cells, developed through training) and spiritual energy (drawn from the mind, from experience and from meditation). Almost every technique consumes it — with the notable exception of pure taijutsu. On this basis, three broad categories of jutsu stand apart: ninjutsu, genjutsu and taijutsu.

Ninjutsu
Ninjutsu is the broadest category: clones, summons, walking on water, breathing fire… Most of these techniques require chakra and hand signs (the famous mudras, whose twelve basic signs bear the names of the Chinese zodiac), and rest on the manipulation of the shape and the nature of chakra. Two opposite examples illustrate this: the Rasengan, pure shape manipulation created by Minato, with no elemental nature and no signs; and the Chidori, created by Kakashi, which relies instead on concentrating Lightning Release chakra.

Genjutsu
Genjutsu covers the illusion techniques: by disrupting the flow of chakra in the target's brain and senses, it alters their perceptions — but its effects are not real. Contrary to a common confusion, it does not require the Sharingan: Kurenai Yuhi is a specialist in it without any dojutsu. The Sharingan, and above all the Mangekyo Sharingan, only makes genjutsu more powerful — like the Tsukuyomi of Itachi or the Kotoamatsukami of Shisui.

Taijutsu
Taijutsu refers to physical hand-to-hand combat, built on the physical conditioning gained through training. In principle it requires neither chakra nor hand signs, and it is executed faster than the other arts. Its most extreme form is the opening of the Eight Inner Gates, which lift the body's limiters to multiply power tenfold — at the cost of severe damage, the eighth Gate being fatal to the user. Its masters are Might Guy and his student Rock Lee.

The Other Disciplines
Around these three pillars orbit specialized disciplines: kenjutsu (swordsmanship) and bukijutsu (weaponry), fuinjutsu (sealing), medical ninjutsu (healing, which demands extreme chakra control, as with Tsunade) and senjutsu (Sage Mode). Finally, kinjutsu is not a family but a status: that of forbidden, dangerous or taboo techniques — like the Shadow Clone Jutsu or the Edo Tensei, both created by Tobirama Senju.

Summary Table
| Category | Details |
|---|---|
| Ninjutsu | Chakra techniques with real effects (clones, summons, natures); e.g. Rasengan, Chidori |
| Genjutsu | Illusions that disrupt the flow of chakra in the senses; e.g. Tsukuyomi (Itachi), Kotoamatsukami (Shisui) |
| Taijutsu | Physical combat, little or no chakra; e.g. the Eight Inner Gates (Rock Lee, Might Guy) |
| Related Disciplines | Kenjutsu, bukijutsu, fuinjutsu, medical ninjutsu, senjutsu; kinjutsu = the “forbidden technique” status |
| Chakra | A blend of physical energy (body) and spiritual energy (mind); the foundation of almost every technique |
FAQ
-
What is the difference between ninjutsu, genjutsu, and taijutsu?Ninjutsu uses chakra for concrete effects (clones, fire, lightning…), often through hand signs. Genjutsu creates illusions by disrupting the flow of chakra in the senses. Taijutsu is physical combat, in principle without chakra.
-
Do you need the Sharingan to cast a genjutsu? No. Any trained ninja can use genjutsu; Kurenai Yuhi is a specialist in it without a dojutsu. The Sharingan only makes genjutsu more powerful, like Itachi's Tsukuyomi.
-
How is chakra formed?By kneading together two energies: physical energy (drawn from the body, developed through training) and spiritual energy (drawn from the mind and from meditation). Almost every technique consumes it, except pure taijutsu.
-
Are the Eight Inner Gates taijutsu or ninjutsu?Taijutsu. They lift the body's limiters to multiply physical power tenfold. Used by Might Guy and Rock Lee, they inflict severe damage, the eighth Gate being fatal.
-
Why are the Rasengan and the Chidori so different? The Rasengan (created by Minato) is pure shape manipulation, with no elemental nature and no hand signs. The Chidori (created by Kakashi) takes the opposite approach: it concentrates Lightning Release chakra.
In summary
Ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu: three paths, one single art. Understanding their differences means grasping the whole logic of the fights in Naruto.
