Hagoromo's Twin Brother
Hamura is the second son of Kaguya and the younger twin brother of Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths: the fourth databook gives him page 71, his elder brother's being page 70, and gives both the same birthday, August 6. His entry classes him as a "celestial being-human hybrid": he is born on Earth, in the Land of So, and not somewhere in the sky — the one who comes from elsewhere is their mother.
Like his brother, he comes into the world naturally possessing chakra, but the Byakugan he carries in both eyes, inherited from Kaguya, belongs to him alone: Hagoromo has none, only the Sharingan, the Mangekyo Sharingan in the anime, and the Rinnegan. His name, 羽村, means "feather village" and answers the 羽衣, "feather robe," of his elder brother.

The Battle Against the Ten-Tails
Together, the two brothers face and seal the Ten-Tails, the form taken by Kaguya once fused with the God Tree. Their technique has a name: the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei, a fuinjutsu reserved for those who have awakened Six Paths Senjutsu. It exists only through their two palms laid together on the target: Hamura applies the Yin Power to it, a dark crescent marked in his left palm, Hagoromo the Yang Power, a bright sun in the right. The operation also seals the target's Rinne Sharingan and draws out its chakra.
Kaguya's chakra is sealed inside Hagoromo, the first jinchuriki in history; the beast's empty shell, the Gedo Mazo (Demonic Statue of the Outer Path), is sealed inside the Moon: two distinct things, and not two names for the same one. Six Paths Senjutsu also gives Hamura flight, every chakra nature, and nine Truth-Seeking Balls, while his brother manifests up to ten.

The Guardian of the Moon
The Moon does not exist before the fight: it is the celestial body formed by the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei, and the novelization of The Last: Naruto the Movie specifies that it is Hamura who gives it its name. He takes the head of the Otsutsuki clan and settles there to guard what is sealed inside — the Gedo Mazo according to one entry, his mother's remains according to the other — becoming the progenitor of the lunar Otsutsuki.
The lock has a key: only a Rinnegan wielder can summon the core out of the satellite. That is how Madara tears the Gedo Mazo from the Moon, shortly before the Second Great Ninja War and not on the eve of the Fourth. Hagoromo, for his part, stays on Earth: it is he, and not Hamura, who creates the nine tailed beasts and spreads ninshu. Before they part, he asks his younger brother to wait a thousand years and watch over humanity; on Hamura's death, the charge passes to the clan.

Where the Accounts Disagree
The oldest account says something else. In chapter 467, the Moon is created by Hagoromo alone, on his deathbed, to lock away the husk of the Ten-Tails — and that account is delivered before the Five Kage by "Madara," that is, by Obito usurping that name. Chapters 681 and 690, like the fourth databook, credit the operation to both brothers.
The anime adds its own variant: episode 462 shows the twins sealing Kaguya herself while the Ten-Tails withers, and episode 464 has Hagoromo say that he sealed Kaguya and the Ten-Tails. That shot is listed by readers among the six mistakes they note in the episode, not by the production staff. The versions also disagree on when he leaves for the Moon: after Hagoromo's death on the English-language side, before it on the French-language side.

The Land of So, What Only the Anime Tells
The twins' youth fits into five Shippuden episodes, 458 to 462: the manga shows none of it and has never named their father, whom the anime identifies as Emperor Tenji. In episode 461, the brothers settle a water dispute between farmers — Hamura spots with his Byakugan the boulder blocking the river, placed there by the toad Gamamaru, but it is Hagoromo who destroys it. He says "ore" where his elder says "watashi": impulsive and impatient, he decides quickly and readily uses his authority. That is where he acknowledges his brother as the stronger of the two.
The next episode turns everything around: Kaguya indoctrinates Hamura and sends him against Hagoromo, who has to strike him down. That blow brings out all at once his Mangekyo Sharingan and his Rinnegan, after which a single-use natural-energy talisman, given by Gamamaru, revives the younger twin. And it is because he was controlled by her that Hamura understands his mother's fears: he still loves her, and stays close to her seal.

The Energy Vessel and the Lunar Civil War
His heaviest legacy, detailed by the film The Last, is an object: the Energy Vessel, a golden sphere shaped in the image of the Tenseigan, which Hamura builds by aggregating the Byakugan of the whole lunar clan. The Retsu no Sho says it was created during his lifetime, so that the accumulated power would serve the people of Earth after a thousand years. It makes the Moon livable: it lights the inhabited inner face, powers the artificial sun — in reality a barrier — animates the puppets, and commands the movements of the celestial body. Only a descendant of Hamura can touch it; from anyone else, it drains the chakra. The price: the clan's newborns have their Byakugan removed to feed it.
The film speaks of "Hamura's Tenseigan," but the phrase refers most of the time, if not always, to this object; its article on the dojutsu even concludes that it is unknown whether he ever possessed one. What follows is clear: the main family and the branch family clash over the interpretation of the Celestial Decree, the latter turns the Vessel into a weapon and wipes out the former. Toneri is the last survivor of that branch family.

The Ancestor of the Hyuga
On Earth, Hamura's bloodline gives rise to the Hyuga Clan, which inherits his Byakugan. The manga establishes that the Hyuga descend directly from the Otsutsuki; it is the databooks and the film The Last that tie this bloodline to Hamura by name. Above all, only the main house inherited his chakra directly — it is that membership and the direct bloodline together that make it possible to touch the Vessel without being drained.
Hence the place of Hinata in The Last: a clan monument comes alive as she passes and releases a puppet that recognizes her as the "Byakugan Princess," before Hamura's spirit awakens her latent chakra and transfers his own to her. The effect can be measured — she gives Naruto back in an instant the chakra Toneri stole from him, where Sakura had taken three days earlier in the same film. She is a descendant, not a reincarnation; and it is from Hanabi that Toneri tears the Byakugan, not from her.

Why the Canon Forgot Him
This forgetting is not a reader's impression, it is a fact of the story: despite his status as a legendary figure, his feats and even his existence ended up forgotten by everyone except his lunar descendants. The production confirms it — a flashback in chapter 670, an anime that makes him wait until episode 420, then a real role in December 2014 with The Last and in May 2016 with the anime arc, that is fifteen to seventeen years after the manga began.
The contrast with Hagoromo explains it: no tailed beasts, no ninshu, no named son — Indra and Asura are his nephews — and no appearance in Boruto. He dies, in a scene from the film, as no one else in his family does: of old age, in his bed, surrounded by his clan. The irony remains: his monument, animated as a golem by Toneri, briefly overwhelms Kurama before a Tailed Beast Bomb sends it into space, and it is on the way back down that it crashes into its own summoner.

FAQ
-
Who is Hamura Otsutsuki? The second son of Kaguya and the younger twin brother of Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths. Like him, he is born with chakra and helps him defeat and then seal the Ten-Tails.
-
Does the Hyuga Clan really descend from Hamura?Yes: his earthly bloodline gives rise to the Hyuga, who inherit his Byakugan. That link is, however, established by the film The Last and the databooks more than by the manga.
-
Why did Hamura go to live on the Moon?To watch over the sealed husk of the Ten-Tails (the Gedo Mazo), becoming the founder of the lunar Otsutsuki — while Hagoromo stayed on Earth.
-
Did Hamura create the tailed beasts? No. It is Hagoromo who splits the Ten-Tails' chakra into nine tailed beasts and spreads ninshu. Hamura, for his part, guards the beast's shell on the Moon.
-
Which dojutsu does Hamura have? The Byakugan, inherited from his mother Kaguya. It is from him that the Hyuga are said to get their dojutsu; the Tenseigan, for its part, is born from the fusion of Otsutsuki chakra with a Hyuga Byakugan.
In summary
Erased from the memory of the ninja world, Hamura still keeps watch — over the Moon and in the blood of the Hyuga, all the way to Boruto's generation.
