CharacterHuman ShinjuMatsuri

A clone born from devoured prey. Matsuri is the Human Shinju produced by Code's Ten-Tails after one of his Claw Grime absorbed Moegi Kazamatsuri. This article details what that chakra passes on to her: the appearance, the kunoichi's chakra natures, her gravel jutsu, and a pair of Rinnegan that Moegi never had. It then follows the target she names, Konohamaru, and the shift from appetite to attachment. It closes on the Thornsoul, the core that can save only one of the two.

When Code unleashes his Claw Grime on Konohagakure, one of them devours Moegi Kazamatsuri and turns into a tree. The creature born from it carries her face, her memories, and her techniques, but also her bonds: Matsuri names as her prey the man who occupied the kunoichi's thoughts. Konohamaru is that target, and this fixation will later turn into feelings.

Born From a Claw Grime That Devoured Moegi

When Code attacks Konohagakure to flush Boruto out of hiding, he unleashes his Claw Grime (爪アカ) on the village, the humanoid soldiers he obtains by wrapping his Claw Marks around the flesh of the Ten-Tails he holds. One of them devours Moegi Kazamatsuri while she is protecting a mother and her child, then turns into a small tree that encloses the body and steals its chakra. From that absorption is born Matsuri, presented as the kunoichi's clone.

Matsuri belongs to the Human Shinju species (人神樹, Hitoshinju), the evolved Claw Grime that have become conscious and that describe themselves as God Trees endowed with consciousness and as incarnations of tailed beasts. The mechanism that produces them and the role of their leader Jura are covered elsewhere. What sets Matsuri apart from him is that she is built on an identifiable prey: her profile lists Moegi as her chakra source and the Ten-Tails as her progenitor, two separate fields, and backs this lineage with chapter 14.

The name is itself a fragment of her source. 祭 reads Matsuri and means "festival"; it derives from the kunoichi's family name, Kazamatsuri (風祭). No page says, however, who names her that way. Ryu's case is better documented, and it diverges from one profile to another: the character's page has the name given to him by Jura just after his manifestation, while Jura's page attributes it to the group gathered for his birth.

Moegi Kazamatsuri as an adult: she is the kunoichi devoured by one of Code's Claw Grime, and Matsuri is born from the absorption of her chakra.

A Harlequin Wearing Moegi's Face

Matsuri closely resembles Moegi and shares her height and build, but she has neither eyebrows nor hair. Like the other conscious Shinju, she wears clothing made of Claw Marks (爪痕): a long striped magenta collar with four points and a studded black hood that echoes the shape of Moegi's hairstyle. It is this outfit that gives her a harlequin look. She also wears a studded black bodysuit.

Two details betray what hides beneath the human appearance: she has a pair of purple Rinnegan and three-toed feet like those of the Claw Grime, strapped with studded bands that mimic heeled ankle boots. Her profile classifies the Rinnegan and Wood Release (Mokuton) as kekkei genkai, credits her with the Earth, Water, and Wood Release natures and places her among the sensor types: apart from the Rinnegan, this is Moegi's own record, since her record carries the same natures and the same classification, with the note "manga only" on Wood Release.

What Moegi's Chakra Passed On to Her

Compared with the other conscious Shinju, Matsuri has a rather cruel and mocking temperament. She belittles Code for his reckless actions and tells him that his destiny is to be a clown that others make use of. The jab comes as early as her debut, in chapter 4, in the dimension where he was keeping the Ten-Tails: Mamushi attacks Boruto there first, then Matsuri appears with Hidari and Jura, who explains to the boy that they have acquired self-awareness.

This personality is explained by her source: because she was created from Moegi's chakra, her emerging individuality is shaped by the kunoichi's emotions and bonds. The rule holds for the whole species, which inherits the model's appearance, chakra signature, memories, and techniques. The inheritance is not guaranteed, however: some attributes can be missing, and Hidari, built on Sasuke, does not properly wield the Chidori, apparently for lack of a Sharingan.

Two poles stir her feelings in particular: Team 10, which Moegi supervised, and Konohamaru Sarutobi. The connection works both ways. Through Moegi's chakra, Matsuri perceives the despair and the anger felt by the team and by Konohamaru when they discover that their comrade has been turned into a tree. These emotions produce in the conscious Shinju urges they cannot explain to themselves.

Four adults sitting side by side at a counter cluttered with bowls, dishes, and bottles, in front of a light curtain decorated with large characters: on the left a man whose face is crossed by a visor with his collar turned up, then a woman with long black hair in a yellow kimono, cheeks flushed, leaning toward her neighbor with a smile, then a man with spiky brown hair, a forehead protector, and a blue scarf, raising a cup, and on the right a young woman with orange hair in pigtails, chin resting in her hand, looking sullen in front of a mug.
Moegi and Konohamaru Sarutobi, seated with Hanabi Hyuga and Shino Aburame: it is the kunoichi's emotions and bonds that shape Matsuri's emerging individuality, and Konohamaru is one of the two poles, along with Team 10.

Choosing a Prey to Learn Who You Are

Gathered in their lair, beneath the roots of a giant tree, the conscious Shinju discuss these identities taking shape and these urges they do not understand. Jura offers them a method: define themselves through their actions, follow their instincts, and each choose a target to devour, on the idea that this choice will enlighten them about their own nature. Matsuri names Konohamaru, and Jura commends her choice as he commends Hidari's.

Her profile links the choice to her evolution: her instinct to consume chakra has been altered, and it redirects onto the man who occupied Moegi's thoughts. The table of the species' members records the pair without comment, Moegi in the "model" column and Konohamaru in the "target" column, just like the four other members listed.

This table reveals a pattern: every Shinju born from human prey targets someone close to its model. Hidari, built on Sasuke, targets Sarada; Mamushi, born from Bug who was guarding Ada, targets Ada; Ryu, born from Shinki, targets Gaara. The stated motives differ, however: Mamushi covets Ada's genes, Ryu names Gaara because the Magnet Release seal that encloses the Kazekage can only be lifted by him, heir to Shinki's jutsu, and Matsuri's case echoes Hidari's, whose profile states the same motive in the same terms. Jura, the only one not built on any human prey, targets Naruto, to whom the table adds Himawari.

From the Urge to Devour Him to Feelings for Him

Her profile then records a shift: this fixation on Konohamaru evolves into romantic feelings, and Matsuri no longer knows how to approach the man she wanted to devour. Nothing indicates how much time separates the two states. At their first in-person meeting, the sight of him leaves her blushing and embarrassed, then thoroughly flustered when the pairing puts her at his side for the rest of the search.

A jealousy is added: she does not like the idea of other women being close to Konohamaru. It is from this that Moegi's profile draws a conclusion about the kunoichi herself, presented as an implication and not as an established fact: since the creature born from her chakra behaves this way, Moegi would have developed feelings for her former teammate and would have shown jealousy.

Jura draws a general lesson from it, but even before the episode: as Matsuri and Ryu have just left on a mission, he explains to Hidari and Mamushi that the conscious Shinju are not so different from humans, both being liable to be led astray by scattered emotions such as love and attachment, and he sees in this an exploitable weakness against them. Only later will he acknowledge that his own experiences and Matsuri's have given him a finer understanding of love.

Mokuton, Gravel, and Trees That Talk

Like her model, Matsuri combines the Earth and Water Release natures to produce Wood Release, which she uses to manipulate roots and to turn her clothing into wood. With Earth Release alone, she produces Earth Release: Sazareishi (土遁・細石), a gravel that condenses around the target and completely immobilizes Boruto, briefly, at their very first encounter in chapter 4. Her profile lists only two named techniques: this gravel, which also appears in Moegi's repertoire, and the Claw Mark.

Her perception abilities are broader. Classified as a sensor type, she uses the surrounding trees to extend her perception and detect presences. She is also credited with a form of plant communication: she listens and speaks to the trees buried far beneath the desert, which tell her that Boruto passed through, and she intends to follow those voices to track him, since trees are everywhere, even underground.

On her power, the profile calls for a qualification. Matsuri is described as a monster whose strength surpasses that of her creator Code, but the species page applies the same wording to all the conscious Shinju: it is not a trait unique to her. And when she is destroyed, Boruto specifies that he only managed it because she was already badly damaged by Konohamaru's attacks.

Sunagakure: The Kazekage and Shinki

Mamushi's investigations establish that Boruto has an accomplice who informs him about the Human Shinju. The trail leads Matsuri to Sunagakure, where the Fifth Kazekage and Team Shinki face her. The outcome is clear: she easily repels the efforts of Gaara and his team combined, in a confrontation that the profile places on pages 2 and 3 of chapter 15.

Shinki reacts first when Matsuri sends her Claw Grime at his gravely wounded father: he encloses the Kazekage in his Magnetite Grain Sealing, a sphere of iron sand that puts the prisoner in stasis and keeps him alive as long as the user is alive too. The Claw Grime then fall back on him and one of them devours him. The barrier nevertheless remains active after the absorption, which Matsuri notes while commending his determination.

Curious to see what kind of new comrade Shinki's essence would yield, she spots the bulb that has sprouted and, with Jura's agreement, sets off the process that gives birth to Ryu. The new Shinju inherits his model's Magnet Release, which he is seen wielding as Iron Sand, and in turn names the Kazekage as his target. Matsuri thus finds herself at the origin of another Shinju, like the Claw Grime that had given rise to her.

Land of Wind: The Outstretched Hand

Sent to the Land of Wind to find Boruto, Matsuri and Ryu are approached by Konohamaru's Team 7 in front of the corpse of a ninja toad they most likely killed and in which Matsuri sees a clue. Both sides announce the same mission and agree to cooperate. Konohamaru then suggests splitting up to cover more ground: the split pairs him with Matsuri, Ryu staying with the younger ones.

They talk as they walk. Matsuri describes to him her difficulty in knowing who she is, then asks permission to call him "Konohamaru-chan." He refuses, embarrassed: only one other person calls him that. Understanding that he means Moegi, she grows irritated and demands to know what their relationship is. Faced with his repeated refusals, she decides she will no longer put up with these emotions and wraps Konohamaru in her Wood Release to devour him.

He begs her not to lose her temper, then notices that she is crying and says so: to him, those tears mean she does not want this. She hesitates again. Konohamaru then asks her to hold his hand; she accepts and finds the contact soothing. The opening is enough for him: he strikes with the two Rasengan that the manga leaves unnamed — the profile borrows the name Odama Rasenrengan from the game Naruto Shippuden 3D: The New Era — and pulverizes the hands and lower body of Matsuri.

The Thornsoul, and What It Costs

Furious, Matsuri presses the attack by making herself limbs of wood, pins Konohamaru to the ground, and prepares to devour him. Boruto bursts in and cuts her to pieces before she can react. The destroyed body settles nothing, however: the core of a Human Shinju, the Thornsoul (棘魂, Togedama), persists even when the shell is entirely destroyed, and makes a resurrection possible.

Boruto recovers the bulb and entrusts it to Konohamaru, asking him to rejoin Sarada and Mitsuki. The rule is twofold: as long as the core survives, the Shinju can be brought back — Hidari was, memory and identity intact — and that same core is required to free the devoured person, whom the tree keeps alive. If it is not carefully preserved, the bulb rots quickly, and the devoured person dies with it.

The team returns to Konoha and Konohamaru frees Moegi thanks to the Thornsoul. The result is unambiguous: this release causes Matsuri's death. Moegi is hospitalized only for the malnutrition suffered during her double's existence, apologizes for worrying everyone, and thanks Konohamaru. Matsuri's profile closes on this deceased status; Ryu's will end the same way, his bulb being used to free Shinki.

FAQ

  • What is left of Moegi in Matsuri?
Enough to call her a clone. The species takes from its model its look, its chakra signature, its memory, and its arsenal: Matsuri has Moegi's three chakra natures, her sensor classification, and even her gravel jutsu. The transmission is not total, however — Hidari, copied from Sasuke, gets nothing good out of the Chidori — and Matsuri, for her part, additionally gains a pair of Rinnegan that the kunoichi never had.
  • Why did Matsuri want to devour Konohamaru?
Because Jura had asked each of them to name a prey, convinced that the choice would reveal their nature. In Matsuri's case, the chakra appetite proper to the species was redirected by her evolution toward the man who haunted the memory she is made of. Her four fellows named Sarada, Ada, Gaara, and Naruto; and she is not alone in her case, since Hidari's profile likewise traces his target back to the feelings inherited from his model.
  • Does Matsuri appear in the anime?
No: she exists only in the manga, with no anime debut. She appeared in chapter 4 of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, and the arc that bears her name alongside Ryu's runs from chapters 16 to 25. Her death therefore takes place entirely on drawn pages, with no broadcast equivalent to date.
  • Did Moegi survive?
Yes. The tree grown from the Claw Grime kept her locked inside and siphoned off her chakra, but alive. Once Matsuri was destroyed, Team 7 brought her core back to the village and Konohamaru used it to free her. Only one aftereffect is known, malnutrition, treated at the hospital; her first words are an apology and a thank-you.
  • Why did freeing Moegi have to cost Matsuri her life?
Because the same object serves both operations. The Thornsoul is the core that makes it possible to resurrect a destroyed Shinju, as Hidari was, but it is also what must be consumed to bring back the person the creature had swallowed. Konohamaru uses it for Moegi, and Matsuri's death follows as the consequence. Ryu will meet the same fate for Shinki's sake.
  • Who really defeated Matsuri?
Both of them, and the precision matters. Konohamaru opens the breach by taking advantage of a moment of hesitation and tears off her hands and lower body; Boruto then arrives and cuts her apart. But it is Boruto himself who puts his own performance in perspective: he only succeeded, he says, because the blows she had taken just before had already left her in bad shape.

In summary

A clone condemned by her source. Matsuri gets from Moegi everything that defines her — appearance, arsenal, target — and vanishes the day Konohamaru uses her Thornsoul to bring the kunoichi back to life; Ryu will meet the same fate for Shinki's sake.
