Heir to the Sharingan, she is nevertheless aiming for the Hokage's seat. Daughter of Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, Sarada moves forward between a heavy legacy and a dream all her own: leading the village. This article untangles the mix-up around Karin and the truth about her origins, the awakening of her Sharingan, triggered by a positive emotion, and her place in the new Team 7 alongside Boruto and Mitsuki. A flagship character of the new generation.

She carries her father's Sharingan and dreams of leading the village: Sarada Uchiha is one of the flagship characters of the new generation. Here is her profile, between Uchiha legacy and Hokage ambition.

The daughter of Sasuke and Sakura

Sarada is the daughter of Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. A member of the Uchiha Clan, she joins the new Team 7 alongside Boruto and Mitsuki, under Konohamaru's leadership. Born on March 31, she appears as early as chapter 700 of Naruto, the epilogue of the series.

Her birth takes place outside the village: Sakura, pregnant, was traveling with Sasuke, and the delivery happens in one of Orochimaru's hideouts, with Karin's help. There is therefore no birth record at the Konoha hospital (Gaiden ch. 700+2), an administrative detail that will become the fuel for the doubt. She is the first Uchiha child born since the clan's massacre, and not the last of the Uchiha, since her father is alive.

The family then returns to Konoha, where her parents teach her to walk. A high fever marks her early childhood, during an absence of Sasuke, who had left to investigate Kaguya; her glasses date from that period, a gift from Karin whose origin she does not know. The story sets the two facts side by side without explaining her nearsightedness.

The mix-up around Karin

A famous misunderstanding surrounds her origins, but it does not come from a memory: an infant remembers nothing of her own birth. It comes from two photographs. After Sakura pulverized the family home with a single punch, Sarada digs through the rubble and discovers that the picture of her parents she had always looked at is only a crop: the full image shows Sasuke posing with Team Taka, including Karin, a woman with glasses who looks like her.

Suigetsu then compares a swab from her cheek with an umbilical cord kept among Karin's belongings, and declares Karin to be Sarada's mother (ch. 700+7). The test is a true positive that is misread, not a false result: the cord linked Sarada to Sakura, and Karin had kept it as a trace of her own bond with Sasuke. She reveals this in chapter 700+10. Karin is an Uzumaki and the midwife at the delivery, neither an Uchiha nor a second wife.

Shin Uchiha and the resolution of the Gaiden

The story runs to ten chapters, 700+1 through 700+10, collected in a single volume in August 2015 and adapted in episodes 19 to 24 of Boruto. In France, Kana publishes it under the title Naruto Gaiden - Le 7e Hokage et la Lune écarlate, and not "Le Printemps écarlate," a phrasing calqued from English that is still going around.

Shin Uchiha is neither a survivor of the massacre nor an Uchiha by blood: he is a former test subject of Orochimaru whose body accepts any transplant without rejection. Hence the Sharingan implanted all over his body, and that right arm harvested and then grafted onto Danzo. Obsessed with Itachi, he usurped the clan's name and wanted to revive the Akatsuki for his own ends: he was never a member of it.

Nor is there only one Shin: an original coexists with a multitude of permanent clones, born from his teeth and his nerves. They do not disperse like shadow clones, they have to be killed — and it is they who finish him off. Naruto then places them in a Konoha orphanage run by Kabuto Yakushi and Urushi.

The answer from Naruto and Sasuke

Naruto is not a bit player in this story. He saves Sarada and Chocho from one of Shin's clones, takes them with him rather than sending them back without an escort, tells them about Sasuke, then catches up with her when she announces she is leaving the village. His argument is the argument of the whole story: family is defined by feelings, not by blood.

The first meeting with her father is a fiasco: seeing her Sharingan, Sasuke takes her for an accomplice of Shin and draws his sword, before recognizing her when he hears her cry "Dad." He still has his Rinnegan and uses it to transport the group; it is much later, facing Isshiki, that he will lose that eye.

He will not answer a single one of her questions. The resolution comes from elsewhere: Sakura tells her daughter that she really is her biological mother, and Sasuke adds that Sarada is herself the proof of the bond that ties her to Sakura.

The awakening of the Sharingan

Sarada carries the Sharingan of her father, but she was not given it: it is the clan's kekkei genkai, passed down by blood, and not an eye transplant — the distinction matters in a story that has multiplied transplanted eyes. She awakens it at eleven, one tomoe in each eye, as she races alone toward the meeting point, carried by the excitement of finally meeting this father she knows so little. The Sharingan responds to an intense emotion, not necessarily to pain; it is the Mangekyo Sharingan that normally demands the death of a loved one.

What follows is counted in tomoe. Sasuke at first refuses to teach her the Chidori: with only one tomoe, she cannot read counterattacks on the technique's straight-line trajectory, and two are needed. This episode comes from the anime, which also gives her an early awakening and a second tomoe against Deepa. The manga, for its part, shows her with three tomoe at the time of Jigen's invasion.

The Mangekyo Sharingan and the Ohirume

At twelve, in chapter 80 of the Boruto manga, Sarada awakens the Mangekyo Sharingan — not by losing a loved one, but by believing Boruto lost and hunted after the Omnipotence of Eida swapped his place with Kawaki's. The trigger is the fear of loss, a case described as extremely rare, if not unique.

She only uses it consciously three years later, in Two Blue Vortex. Yodo, struck down by the god tree Ryu and dying, tells her that it is allowed to use something dangerous to protect what you hold dear. Sarada then reveals the Ohirume and makes Ryu implode before passing out from exhaustion; Yodo, for her part, succumbs to her wounds.

The technique bears one of the names of the sun goddess in the Nihon Shoki, after the Amaterasu of Sasuke and Itachi: up to four black spheres whose pull has nothing to do with their mass, which draw in weapons, techniques, and living beings, and affect only the targets she looks at. The power is paid for in eyesight — bleeding eyes, then genuinely reduced vision that Sakura corrects with stronger lenses. The Mangekyo Sharingan and the Ohirume exist only in the manga to date.

Her techniques and her feats

Her arsenal crosses both her parents: from Sakura, the strength multiplied by chakra and the Okasho; from Sasuke, the Katon Gokakyu, the Hosenka, the Chidori, and the Chidori Nagashi, the last of these in the manga only. Her stated specialty is shurikenjutsu — six hits in a row blindfolded — and her official profile lists her as a medical ninja.

Her major feat is the fight against Boro, where her teammates hand her command. Mitsuki brings her a sample of black mist in which her focused Sharingan, working like a microscope, identifies a virus; Kawaki tells her that the enemy's regeneration comes from a scientific ninja tool lodged in his body. She spots that Boro moves it with hand signs and chooses the Chidori, the only faster attack, to neutralize its core: it is Boruto, under the grip of the Karma, who finishes the enemy off.

Her rank depends on the medium: the anime promotes her to chunin at twelve after a victory over Chocho, and gives her Team 7 when Konohamaru leaves; the manga leaves her a genin three years after Boruto's departure.

The dream of becoming Hokage

Unlike the quest for revenge that long haunted her father, Sarada holds on to a bright dream: to become Hokage in her turn, inspired by Naruto's devotion to the village. The canon gives it a very concrete origin: a bento. She had taken from Boruto the lunch meant for his father in order to give herself a pretext to follow him; at the end of the Gaiden, it is Boruto she thanks, explaining that since she cannot deliver a bento to the whole village, she has decided to become Hokage.

The goal is explicit: to connect with as many people as possible, the opposite of her father's solitary path, and to govern by choosing a different path from his. Nothing establishes, however, that she will get there. At this point in the series, she is a serious candidate and an heir busy elsewhere: her father, absorbed by a Claw Grime, is trapped in a Thorny Soul Bulb that she is trying to recover, and Code has just carried it off.
