A village founded by a single man, with no recognized Kage. Otogakure, in the Land of Sound, the former Land of Rice Fields neighboring the Land of Fire, is less a city than a network of hideout-laboratories serving Orochimaru, assisted by Kabuto. There you meet his elite guard, the Sound Four — Kimimaro, Tayuya, Jirobo, Kidomaru, Sakon and Ukon —, the trap alliance forged against Konoha, and the obsessive quest for a perfect body.

A one-man village, a front for a vast open-air laboratory: this is Otogakure, the Hidden Sound Village founded by Orochimaru.

A one-man village

Orochimaru, one of the three Legendary Sannin who became a rogue ninja, founds Otogakure — the Hidden Sound Village — after leaving the Akatsuki. It is a one-man village.

Officially, he is said to have created it to offer a refuge to talented ninja, far from the five great nations. In reality, it serves as cover for his forbidden experiments and his quest to learn every jutsu.

Wooden buildings with curved roofs clinging to tall rock spires, linked by a suspended walkway and cables stretched above the void, under a blue sky.
Otogakure, built apart among a landscape of rock spires: a village with no founding clan, born of Orochimaru's will alone.

A network of hideouts

Otogakure is not one of the five great villages, nor even a real town. It is a network of hideouts and laboratories kept hidden, scattered across the Land of Sound and beyond.

Located in the former Land of Rice Fields, it depends entirely on Orochimaru and his right-hand man, Kabuto Yakushi. No recognized Kage leads it.

An isolated rocky islet in the middle of a dark sea under a stormy sky: multi-story buildings are set into the rock, linked by a walkway to a turret planted on a nearby spur.
One of Orochimaru's hideouts built into an islet: the Sound is a string of isolated bases, not a town.

The Sound Four

Orochimaru's elite guard is the Sound Four: Jirobo, Kidomaru, the twins Sakon and Ukon, and Tayuya. Originally there were five of them — the Sound Five — led by Kimimaro, the last of the Kaguya clan.

They all bear a Curse Mark, derived from an enzyme isolated from the body of Jugo. Not to be confused with the Sound genin team (Dosu, Zaku, Kin), sent to the Chunin Exams.

Seen from below on a rooftop, four ninja in light tunics marked with a round motif and belted with a thick purple rope: a hulking fighter with an orange mohawk, a small red-haired girl wearing a helmet, a dark-skinned man with a forehead protector, and a figure with long gray hair sitting on the railing.
Orochimaru's personal guard in full: four fighters placed under his direct authority.

The alliance against Konoha

Orochimaru allies Otogakure with Sunagakure to invade Konoha during the Chunin Exams. But the alliance is a trap: he has killed the Fourth Kazekage and taken his appearance to manipulate the Hidden Sand.

The plan calls for Gaara, Shukaku's jinchuriki, to release the beast in the heart of the village. During the assault, Orochimaru kills his former master Hiruzen, the Third Hokage.

In a clearing ringed by enormous trunks, a pale figure with long black hair and a purple rope tied at his back faces a man in dark clothing with a covered face, holding a blue-glowing weapon in both hands; to the right, an ape-like creature with white fur braces itself on the ground.

The quest for a perfect body

Behind all of this, a single goal: to obtain a healthy and powerful body as a new vessel. Above all, Orochimaru covets that of Sasuke and his Sharingan.

Discovering that they have been manipulated, the Sunagakure ninja break the alliance and will later make peace with Konoha.

A long dark room lined on both sides with tall cylindrical tanks lit in green, where human shapes can be made out; at the back, a small figure stands before a door.
Bodies preserved in tanks in one of his laboratories: the entire facility serves the search for a vessel.
