Hiruko: The Sannin's Forgotten Teammate

Released in Japan on August 1, 2009, Naruto Shippuden the Movie: The Will of Fire hands its antagonist role to a shinobi absent from both the manga and the anime series. Born without the slightest aptitude, Hiruko draws from Kakashi Hatake's survival a conclusion that decides everything else: a Sharingan can change owners, so a bloodline can be stolen.

A contemporary of the Sannin born without a shred of talent

It all fits in three words: a contemporary and former friend of the Sannin. Hiruko (卑留呼) wanted to become a powerful shinobi, but he was born without the slightest particular aptitude. Nothing makes him a "fourth Sannin": in the movie, he merely lays claim to that past friendship, admitting that he was not a gifted shinobi like Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru. The character was born in a feature film, released in Japan on August 1, 2009.

This exclusive status matters: Hiruko appears neither in the manga nor in the anime series. His profile credits him with only two media, the movie and the game Naruto Mobile, which places him alongside the other feature-film antagonists listed in the guide to the eleven movies. Hiruko, on the other hand, keeps his own: his technique requires body modifications, a space hollowed out in the torso to house the target, hence the wide scars and the staples visible on his chest and his sides. The declaration of war projected over the five villages

The disappearances begin far from Konoha: ninja carrying kekkei genkai vanish in Kumogakure, Iwagakure, Kirigakure and Sunagakure. Suspicion nevertheless falls on the Hidden Leaf village, and the rumor of a rebellion against the Land of Fire swells. When a squad of Anbu sets out to investigate, Hiruko wipes it out by draining the Earth Release chakra of its members, then turns the ground against them in the form of stone jaws.

That evening, he projects his image into the sky above the five great villages and introduces himself as a shinobi of Konohagakure — the sentence that finishes pointing to the culprit. He announces that he holds the kekkei genkai of the four missing ninja, demands the fifth, promises his own immortality and declares a Fourth Great Ninja War; the one the manga tells takes place well after the events of the movie. The other nations mass troops at the borders and threaten to invade; the Fire Daimyo orders Tsunade to arrest those responsible and to prove Konoha's innocence, failing which the Land of Fire will destroy the village itself to preserve the peace. The Puppet Curse, placed years earlier

The fifth kekkei genkai has a name and an address: Kakashi's Sharingan. Hiruko does not even need to go and fetch it, since he marked his target during the Third Great Ninja War, when they met. It is a seal that the movie never names and that the game Naruto Mobile calls the Puppet Curse, which can be activated years after it is placed: the character's profile speaks of nearly two decades, while the movie's summary sticks to more than ten years.

The pattern is a red eye with a ringed pupil, four lines running from the upper eyelid and two thick lines on the side. It appears on Kakashi's forehead, fades, then takes control of his body; the possessed man's eyes turn red. The control is comparable to that of a puppet, hand gestures included — a kinship of vocabulary with the kugutsu no jutsu, not a kinship of technique.

Kakashi then chooses to let himself be taken away. He asks Shikamaru to tell Naruto that he is leaving the village and not to follow him, while Tsunade officially declares him a rogue ninja to cover the secret mission. Heaven, Earth, Man: the ritual of Mount Shumisen

Full absorption obeys three named conditions: "Heaven", "Earth" and "Man". They correspond to the solar eclipse, to Mount Shumisen and to the five sacrifices carrying kekkei genkai. Brought together, they are meant to bring immortality and mastery of the five elements. The movie specifies that the expected annular eclipse is two days away, which sets the whole countdown of the story.

Mount Shumisen (須弥山) stands between the Land of Earth and Kusagakure, at the center of the continent. Four gates guard the way up, the first three held by Ichi, Ni and San, whose names simply mean one, two and three. At the summit, the fortress displays the crucified victims. The name points to Mount Sumeru of Hindu-Buddhist cosmology, and the four gates to the Four Heavenly Kings that surround it.

The three guardians use their master's kinjutsu, but on animals: two-headed snakes for Ichi, modified dogs and a lion-turtle for Ni, a bird with explosive feathers for San. Ichi falls to the combined attack of Rock Lee and Neji, from Might Guy's team, and Ni to Shino's insects; San, for his part, breaks free of Ino's mind hold before merging with his two comrades into a single beast, which the Konoha 11 finally destroy. A trap of camouflaged barrier seals completes the setup; Shikamaru dispels it with his Shadow Sewing.

Tsunade's seal, the Rasenshuriken and the final remorse

Before leaving, Kakashi asks Tsunade to place a Delayed Technique (時限式の術) on him, a fuinjutsu that goes off at the appointed time even if its bearer is tortured or plunged into a trance. Sai presents it as a rare last resort of the Anbu, Sakura as a living time bomb. Its programmed effect is simple: to activate the Kamui at the precise moment when Hiruko tries to assimilate him.

The plan fails through an excess of loyalty. Naruto bursts the shell of mud with Rasengan blows and tears Kakashi out of Hiruko's body; the Kamui is interrupted, and this intervention saved the nukenin without meaning to. The fight that follows goes badly: Hiruko absorbs the giant Rasengan and the Raikiri, then sends them back at their casters. The Rasenshuriken finally strikes the torso: Hiruko fails to recombine its shape manipulation and its nature manipulation, and the copy he attempts falls apart.

The ending is a dialogue. Back in his original appearance, Hiruko asks Kakashi what he lacked; the latter answers that he used others to make up for his weakness and only ever sought to perfect himself alone. Hiruko objects that he had no comrades — then sees his old friends appear, the Sannin and the Third Hokage, telling him that they were there. Kakashi admits to having made the same mistake.
