UniverseIwagakureTsuchikage

Who succeeds the oldest Kage in the ninja world? His granddaughter. Kurotsuchi, a jonin kunoichi of Iwagakure, becomes the Fourth Tsuchikage after Onoki's retirement, in the Boruto era. This profile sets the genealogy straight — she is Kitsuchi's daughter, and therefore the Third's granddaughter, not his daughter — and details her Lava Release, a corrosive quicklime that is hardened with water to trap the opponent, far from the expected magma.

The heiress of the oldest Kage in the ninja world: proud, sharp and formidable, Kurotsuchi will succeed her grandfather. Meet the Fourth Tsuchikage of Iwagakure.

The Kunoichi of Iwagakure

Kurotsuchi is a kunoichi of jonin rank from Iwagakure, the Hidden Stone Village, known for her self-assured character and her unwavering loyalty to her village. The fourth and last databook, the Jin no Sho, devotes page 94 to her: born September 6, blood type O, eighteen years old in Part II of the story, 163.6 cm for 47.5 kg, ninja registration number IW-09011.

This volume stops at chapter 691: the Boruto-era data — 166 cm, Kage rank — come from Zai no Sho page 33, a moviebook devoted to the Boruto movie, and not a databook. She appears in chapter 454 (episode 199 of Shippuden), and Claire Tefnin voices her in French. Kishimoto drew her with a dancer's build to suggest lightness and agility; her eyes are pink in the Naruto manga, black elsewhere.

Onoki's Granddaughter

She is the granddaughter of Onoki, the Third Tsuchikage — and not his daughter. The link runs through her father Kitsuchi, Onoki's son. At the Five Kage Summit, she in fact serves as her grandfather's bodyguard, paired with Akatsuchi.

The family tree goes higher: Ishikawa, founder of Iwagakure and First Tsuchikage, is Onoki's grandfather, as the Stone Monument scene in chapter 575 establishes. Kurotsuchi is therefore his great-great-granddaughter. Three of the four Tsuchikage come from the same family; only the Second, Mu, has no established family tie with the leaders of Iwagakure: he stood behind the First at the very first Kage summit and taught Dust Release to Onoki.

Her name, written 黒ツチ, points to a spelling meaning "black earth", in a series that includes Akatsuchi the red, Kitsuchi the yellow and Kontsuchi the navy blue.

The Five Kage Summit and Chapter 470

Her first scene sets the tone: she advises Onoki to retire because of his back. At the Five Kage Summit, she takes his side during the Fourth Raikage's outburst, then asks for permission to face Sasuke, "the one who defeated Deidara” — defeated, not killed, since the explosives expert blew himself up. She would watch the fight from the shadows, without taking part, sheltered under a dome of rock.

Chapter 470 is more revealing still: on leaving the Land of Iron, she coldly proposes eliminating Naruto and Killer Bee, in order to sabotage Madara's plan and cut down the forces of Konoha and Kumogakure by that much. Onoki refuses; she reproaches him for no longer acting like the stubborn old mule she knows. She also calls Deidara "Deidara-nii", a term whose meaning is never explained.

Her Lava Release

Her kekkei genkai is the Yoton (Lava Release), born of the fusion of Fire Release and Earth Release. But her own lava is not magma: it is corrosive quicklime, which she spews out in quantity before adding water to it to make it harden like cement and trap her target. Yoton has no single form: it changes with its wielder, and six variants are recorded.

  • Molten rock: Son Goku and Roshi.
  • Acid sludge: Mei Terumi and Boro.
  • Quicklime: several shinobi of Iwagakure.
  • Vulcanized rubber: Dodai and Karyu, of Kumogakure.
  • Melting flames: Etoro Konjiki, in a novel.
  • Volcanic ash: Kurotsuchi's own form.

The lava of Mei Terumi is therefore not magma but an acid sludge, according to the fourth databook, the anime having first shown it as liquid rock. Kurotsuchi, for her part, inherited neither the Dust Release, a three-nature kekkei tota, nor her grandfather's flight technique.

A woman with black hair cut in a bob, leaning forward in a dark red outfit, expels from her mouth a vast gray mass that stretches far out in front of her against a blurred orange background.
Yoton is spewed from the mouth, and in volume: it is this mass, hardened afterwards with water, that traps the target.

Quicklime Congealing, Ash and Full Arsenal

The Quicklime Congealing Technique runs on four hand seals — Hare, Ox, Dog, Snake —, reaches mid-range, serves for attack as well as for support, appears on page 327 of the fourth databook and debuts in chapter 514. Above all, the lime does not harden on its own: it needs the water of the Water Trumpet, which at the same time extends the surface covered, and so the range.

The Ash Stone Seal Technique follows a different logic: two hand seals, short and mid-range, a support technique that spews out an ash cloud wrapping around the opponent. With no databook reference, it comes from the Boruto manga. Outside Yoton, she wields Earth Release (Doton), Fire Release (Katon) and Water Release (Suiton); Yin Release (Inton) and the Hiding Like a Mole technique exist only in the novels, the Rock Pillar Spears in the movie and in the anime, the golem and the sword in the anime only.

⚔️ On the storefront side, the selection of Naruto figures brings together the main faces of the story.

On a vast light-colored expanse under a blue sky, a ninja projects a wide fan-shaped spray of water in front of him.
The Water Trumpet: without it, the Quicklime Congealing Technique does not harden — and its range does not extend.

The Capture of Kabuto on the Turtle Island

Her clearest feat of arms in the manga plays out in chapter 514. Sent with Akatsuchi and Onoki to reinforce the garrison of the turtle island Genbu, she spots Kabuto and Deidara there; while her grandfather draws the explosives expert away, she catches the spy by trickery in her Quicklime Congealing, so that Aoba can question him. Kabuto frees himself by returning to his snake form, abducts Yamato in the process and disappears: she captures him, she does not beat him.

The anime gives her a second turn in the spotlight: in episode 280 of Shippuden, she questions the reanimated Deidara, neutralizes his buried mines with lime, then transforms into Sasuke to lure him into a trap. Another episode shows her already a ninja when she sees him flee Iwagakure, when he had already joined the Akatsuki.

A giant white snake rears up above a wooden platform at the water's edge, while a man flees in the foreground.
Kabuto returns to his snake form, carries off Yamato and disappears: she captures him, she does not beat him.

The War, Then the Kage Title

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Kurotsuchi fights in her father's division — she is not yet Tsuchikage at that point. The Second Division, known as the short-range combat division, mixes shinobi and samurai on the front line, and it is Kitsuchi who commands it: she serves there as a member, which she takes badly. Against the Ten-Tails, she acts neither alone nor on her own initiative: the plan comes from Shikaku Nara, her father digs the pit, several Yoton users including her pour the lime into it, then the Sarutobi clan dries the whole thing with Fire Release. She would then be caught, like everyone else, in the Infinite Tsukuyomi.

It is only after the war, when Onoki retires — and not on his death, a widespread misreading —, that she becomes the Fourth Tsuchikage of Iwagakure. The manga shows her already in office in chapter 700, then in Naruto Gaiden, where the Kage listen to Sasuke lay out the origin of the White Zetsu and decide to keep it secret. She is found in that role again in the Boruto era, where she attends the Chunin Exams in Konoha.

Five Kage hats in different colors set on a pentagonal table; around it, a blond man in an orange coat standing, a white-haired man, a red-haired man seated, a blue-haired man and a woman with black hair cut in a bob in a red outfit.
A seat at the table of the five Kage: it is after the war, on Onoki's retirement, that Kurotsuchi takes the title.

Shikamaru Shinden and the Mitsuki Disappearance Arc

The novel Shikamaru Shinden gives her her political arc. Suspicious after the discovery of the ninja weapons developed in secret in Konoha, she demands their full disclosure; Shikamaru demonstrates in the middle of the summit that the maneuver is aimed at breaking up the Shinobi Union, so that Iwagakure and Kirigakure can invade the Land of Flowers, and immobilizes every Kage with his Kagemane. We then learn that she was obeying under coercion from the Land of Earth daimyo, against her own judgment.

The anime goes further still. In the Mitsuki Disappearance arc, rogue ninja come to steal the secrets of Iwagakure; Onoki digs up a forbidden jutsu and develops the Akuta, which his granddaughter rejects in the name of the demilitarization agreement. Abducted by Ku — a Fabrication, a partial clone of Onoki, and not an Akuta —, she shares a cell with Shikadai before leading the counterattack. Onoki sacrifices himself; after his funeral, the Five Kage bury the truth and make public a version in which the Tsuchikage put down dissidents and in which her grandfather died of illness.

On a paved terrace, a woman in a red robe faces a tall figure dressed in a long coat and wearing a conical hat.
Ku ambushes Kurotsuchi: the Mitsuki Disappearance arc has her abducted by her own rogue ninja.

FAQ

  • Is Kurotsuchi Onoki's daughter or his granddaughter?
She is the granddaughter of Onoki, the Third Tsuchikage. The link runs through her father Kitsuchi, who is Onoki's son. Calling her "Onoki's daughter" is a common mistake.
  • What number Tsuchikage is she?
She is the Fourth Tsuchikage of Iwagakure. She succeeds her grandfather Onoki, who was the Third Tsuchikage.
  • Was she Tsuchikage during the Fourth Great Ninja War?
No. During the war, she fights as a kunoichi of the Second Division (commanded by her father), and Onoki is still the Third Tsuchikage. She only becomes the Fourth after the war, in the Boruto era.
  • What does her Lava Release consist of?
Her form of Yoton is not molten magma but corrosive quicklime. Her signature technique projects that quicklime; by adding water to it, she makes it harden like cement to trap the opponent.
  • Which chakra natures does she master?
At least three basic natures: Earth Release, Fire Release and Water Release. The Fire + Earth combination gives her her kekkei genkai, Yoton (Lava Release), in the form of quicklime.

In summary

A worthy heir to Onoki, Kurotsuchi embodies Iwagakure's changing of the guard: a kunoichi with a character of stone and corrosive lava, who will carry the title of Tsuchikage into the new generation.
