Powerful, feared, then massacred in a single night. Descended from Indra Otsutsuki and hereditary rivals of the Senju, the Uchiha nonetheless co-founded Konoha before being sidelined after Kurama's attack. This complete history lays out the mechanics of the Sharingan up to the Mangekyo Sharingan — paid for at the cost of blindness — then the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan and sometimes the Rinnegan, the Curse of Hatred, the coup d'etat prepared under Fugaku, and the night of the massacre, the work of Itachi and Tobi.

A legendary dojutsu, a love that turns to hatred, and a tragic fate: the Uchiha clan is one of the most powerful and most cursed clans in the Naruto universe. Here is its complete history.

The Descendants of Indra

The Uchiha clan is descended from Indra Otsutsuki, the eldest son of Hagoromo, the Sage of the Six Paths. The rival Senju clan, for its part, is descended from the younger son, Asura. The ancestral enmity between the two clans comes from the fact that Hagoromo chose the younger son as the heir to his philosophy: out of jealousy, Indra started a war that was passed on from generation to generation, through the reincarnations of the two brothers.

The quarrel goes back to the Sage's two sons: the younger designated as heir, the elder starting a war that their bloodlines pass down.

The Sharingan

The Sharingan is the clan's hereditary dojutsu: a red pupil bearing tomoe that makes it possible, among other things, to copy techniques, to perceive chakra and movement, and to cast powerful genjutsu. The clan's emblem is a fan (uchiwa), tied to its mastery of the Fire Release element, its traditional specialty.

The Curse of Hatred

The "Curse of Hatred" is a concept laid out by Tobirama Senju: the Uchiha love with rare intensity, and when they lose the object of that love, their affection turns into devouring hatred — a suffering presented as the trigger for awakening the Sharingan, then the Mangekyo Sharingan. It is the dark counterpart of the " Will of Fire " associated with Konoha.

Co-Founders of Konoha

After generations of war, the Uchiha and the Senju sealed a peace that gave birth to Konoha: it was the work of Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju. But Hashirama became the First Hokage, which Madara experienced as the Uchiha being placed under supervision. Later, after the attack of Kurama on the village — which the Sharingan makes it possible to control —, the clan was suspected, relegated to an isolated district, and placed under surveillance.

The handshake between Madara and Hashirama puts an end to generations of war: it is the founding act of Konoha.

The Massacre of the Clan

Wounded by this distrust, the clan, led by Fugaku Uchiha, prepared a coup d'etat. To prevent it, Danzo placed Itachi before an ultimatum. Itachi chose to wipe out his own people in a single night, helped by Tobi — Obito Uchiha, whom he believed to be Madara —, in exchange for sparing the life of his little brother Sasuke. Note: the real Madara did not take part in the massacre, because he was already dead; he would only "come back" later, reanimated during the Fourth Great Ninja War.

A single night was enough: Itachi wipes out his own people and spares only his little brother.

The Mangekyo Sharingan and the Rinnegan

The Mangekyo Sharingan is an advanced form that awakens only after intense trauma, at the cost of progressive blindness. The only remedy is the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, obtained by transplanting the eyes of another closely related Uchiha: Madara received Izuna's, Sasuke received Itachi's. At its peak, the clan even reaches the Rinnegan, the original dojutsu of Hagoromo.

The Mangekyo Sharingan is paid for with progressive blindness; to halt it, Madara will receive the eyes of his brother Izuna.

FAQ

  • Who is the Uchiha clan descended from?
From Indra Otsutsuki, the eldest son of the Sage of the Six Paths. The Senju clan is descended from the younger son, Asura. It is this brotherly rivalry, revived by their reincarnations, that pits the two clans against each other across the centuries.
  • Why did Itachi massacre the clan?
The clan, sidelined after Kurama's attack, was preparing a coup d'etat. To prevent a civil war, Danzo placed Itachi before an ultimatum: he wiped out his own people in a single night, in exchange for sparing Sasuke's life.
  • Why does the Mangekyo Sharingan cause blindness?
Every use of its techniques damages the sight, all the way to blindness. The only remedy is the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan, obtained by transplanting the eyes of another closely related Uchiha: it restores sight and increases power.
  • Did the real Madara take part in the massacre?
No. Itachi's masked accomplice that night was Obito, under the identity of "Tobi", posing as Madara. The real Madara was already dead; he would reappear only later, reanimated during the Fourth Great Ninja War.
  • Why is the Uchiha emblem a fan?
Because the clan's name is a reading of the word "uchiwa" (fan). The fan is used to fan flames: the Uchiha are associated with the Fire Release element, their traditional specialty.

In summary

Greatness, pride, and tragedy: the Uchiha clan on its own concentrates the emotional heart of Naruto — a cycle of hatred that Sasuke will have to learn to break.
