Mugino (ムギノ) is a jonin of Konohagakure, and not much more: no clan, no birth date and no measurements are known for him. He enters Boruto: Naruto Next Generations in chapter 16 of the manga, then in episode 158 of the anime. The vital details on record fit in five lines: male, deceased, affiliated with Konoha, Earth Release (Doton) chakra nature, jonin rank for the New Era.

In chapter 17, the story stops naming him altogether: he is no longer anything but "Konohamaru's partner" there, attacked outside the wreck while the latter copies its data, and urging his teammate to flee. How they met is not told: it is only known that Mugino eventually became a close friend of Konohamaru Sarutobi. The rest fits into one dense line: over the course of their shared missions, Mugino saved Konohamaru's life more than once, and the two men regularly had a drink together in various bars once back home. Episode 180 confirms how long-standing the bond is, something Boruto takes for granted.

Episode 158 provides the clearest testimony. Konohamaru, who ranks among the best jonin in Konoha, openly praises his teammate there and credits him with a good part of his own survival. In it, Mugino accompanies Konohamaru's team to the Land of Valleys to find Anato, a researcher from a medical company who has gone missing, at the request of his wife Mia. On site, the group runs into Victor, the company's president. Anato is found with his body made malleable and his mind gone, and attacks the shinobi who came to find him.

When Mitsuki develops the same symptoms, it is Mugino who leads the team to Yubina, a former medical ninja whose skills he vouches for despite her disconcerting manners. The diagnosis uncovers a trade in cells from Hashirama Senju resold on the black market. The investigation then shifts toward the Land of Silence, where the Konoha-nin will have to take on the identity of a rogue ninja to trace the network.

The passage that defines him is elsewhere. Facing the demon that Yuga summons at the cost of his own life, Mugino understands that the creature feeds on its targets' chakra. He pins it down and lets it absorb his own long enough for Konohamaru and Boruto to finish it off, each with his own Rasengan. Back on his feet, he tells the genin that they will have to broaden their point of view; Boruto grants him the substance and advises him to work on the delivery.

The pet shop omen and Victor's tree

In episode 167, an old woman who runs a pet shop predicts to Mugino the death of a close friend. His profile adds that he alone could have prevented it. He then gets himself added to Konohamaru's mission to the Land of Valleys in order to quietly investigate Victor's company. It is in fact this fortune teller who made him take in a turtle, about which he will later tell Boruto that the prediction never came true.

The infiltration reveals far worse than trafficking. Disguised as guards during the daimyo's inspection, the two jonin dispel the genjutsu that Victor had administered to him under the cover of sterilization: the patients displayed in stasis were being used as food for a miniature God Tree. Konohamaru holds the tree back while Mugino evacuates the daimyo, the only credible witness to the industrialist's crimes. The report the two men then hand to Naruto is the most lasting thing the mission leaves behind. In it they establish the link between Victor and Kara, and report the existence of the "Outers", those outside agents who spy for the organization. The question of closing the village gates is raised right after. In episode 174, Mugino is stabbed while protecting Konohamaru and keeps moving despite the bleeding.

The cave, Ao, and the Doton that closes it all

Back to the manga. Konohamaru and Mugino are sent to inspect the wreck of an airship that fell on the border of the Land of Fire. Mugino stands guard outside while his teammate retrieves the data from an already opened container; an autonomous puppet takes him down before Konohamaru can get back out, and he blames himself for his lack of vigilance as he collapses. Konohamaru drags him to a cave, where the team and Katasuke Tono eventually join them.

Ao appears and demands to know what the container held. The refusal triggers the assault: Katasuke absorbs the shots, Konohamaru uses the opening to destroy the weapon with a Rasengan, Ao retaliates with the prosthetics hidden in his body, tears an absorbing glove off Katasuke, tries it on Boruto's Rasengan, then concludes that the whole group must die so that Kara stays secret. Mugino grabs hold of him to keep him back; a blade housed in his left forearm runs through his chest.

He does not let go. Mugino triggers the Doton: Iwayado Kuzushi, a B-rank offensive ninjutsu that the second databook describes on page 258 — it destroys the balance point of a cave and causes it to collapse — and buries Ao with him while ordering the others to flee. What follows will not be romanticized: Ao pulls himself out of the rubble almost immediately. A turtle, a letter, a grave

Before leaving, Mugino had entrusted his turtle to Boruto and left him the key to his apartment. The boy keeps his promise after his death. In episode 193, Konohamaru comes to sort through his friend's belongings and finds that Boruto had gotten there before him. The animal, which bites the genin, does not bite the jonin: the two agree that Konohamaru will adopt it, along with the admission letter his grandfather had signed years earlier.

The anime then gives him a grave in the Konoha cemetery. Konohamaru comes back there regularly to give his friend news of the village, up to announcing the imminent arrival of Isshiki Otsutsuki and promising to stake his life to protect their home, as he had done. This visit sits at episode 215, thirty-one episodes after the cave.

Ao himself dies shortly after, killed by the crushing summon of Kashin Koji, at the moment when he pushes Boruto out of reach. Here again in the anime, Konohamaru still grants him a grave: not to forgive him for killing Mugino, but out of gratitude for that act, considering that he died as a hero and as a shinobi.
