There are only two bells for three students. Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura under the guidance of a laid-back Kakashi: here is the path of the most iconic squad in the series. From the bell test to escorting Tazuna to the Land of Waves, that C-rank mission that spirals out of control against Zabuza and Haku, through to Team Kakashi where Sai replaces Sasuke and Yamato takes over. Not to mention the echoes of the Sannin and the new Team 7.

The most iconic team in Naruto: three explosive genin and a laid-back sensei. Here is Team 7, from the bell test to Team Kakashi.

Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura and Kakashi

The Team 7 squad brings together three freshly graduated genin — Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno — under the leadership of jonin Kakashi Hatake.

This is the most famous squad in the series. Note: "Uchiwa" is the French dub spelling, "Uchiha" the international romanization — one and the same clan.

The Bell Test

Kakashi puts every team through the bell test: stealing them from him within a time limit. The catch is that there are only two of them for three students, in order to sow discord.

The real lesson is not to get hold of them, but to understand that teamwork comes first. Team 7 succeeds by sharing its food despite the ban — the first team Kakashi has ever passed.

The Land of Waves Mission

Their first major mission, in the Land of Waves, is to escort the bridge builder Tazuna. Launched as a C-rank, it spirals out of control against Zabuza Momochi and his companion Haku.

Sasuke nearly dies there protecting Naruto: a founding moment in their rivalry. The arc ends with the death of Haku, then of Zabuza, who dies after killing the traitor Gato.

The Reshuffle Into Team Kakashi

After Sasuke's defection, having left to join Orochimaru, the team is rebuilt as Team Kakashi. Sai replaces Sasuke, imposed by Danzo and Root; Yamato leads the group in Kakashi's place.

Yamato is chosen for his Wood Release, inherited from the DNA of the First Hokage: this power can contain the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra if Naruto loses control of it. This reshuffle follows the rescue of Kazekage Gaara, which had left Kakashi exhausted.

Echoes of the Sannin and the Sage of the Six Paths

Team 7 echoes the Sannin: during the time skip, each member is trained by one of them — Naruto by Jiraiya, Sasuke by Orochimaru, Sakura by Tsunade — and inherits their signature animal.

Deeper still: Naruto and Sasuke are the reincarnations of Asura and Indra, the sons of the Sage of the Six Paths. Their rivalry replays a thousand-year-old cycle, after Hashirama and Madara.

The New Team 7

A new Team 7 emerges in the Boruto series: jonin Konohamaru leads Boruto Uzumaki, Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki.

First named "Team 3", it is renamed in tribute to their parents' original team — the trio of Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura.

FAQ

  • What is the real lesson of the bell test?
Teamwork. The goal is not to take the bells (there are only two for three students, to sow discord), but to understand that teammates come first. Team 7 passes the test by sharing its food despite the ban.
  • Who replaces Sasuke and Kakashi in Team Kakashi?
After Sasuke's defection, Sai replaces him (added at the request of Danzo, head of Root) and Yamato, a former Anbu, leads the team in Kakashi's place, assigned by the Fifth Hokage Tsunade.
  • Why Yamato in particular?
Because he has mastered Wood Release, obtained thanks to the DNA of the First Hokage (Hashirama). This power lets him contain the Nine-Tailed Fox's chakra if Naruto loses control of it.
  • How does Team 7 echo the Sannin?
During the time skip, each member is trained by a Sannin (Naruto by Jiraiya, Sasuke by Orochimaru, Sakura by Tsunade) and associated with their signature animal. Naruto and Sasuke are also the reincarnations of Asura and Indra.
  • Who makes up the new Team 7 in Boruto?
Boruto Uzumaki, Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki, led by jonin Konohamaru Sarutobi. First named "Team 3", it is renamed "Team 7" in tribute to their parents' original team.

In summary

From three kids who can't stand each other to a tight-knit family, Team 7 is the beating heart of Naruto — a bond strong enough to be passed on to the next generation.
