CharacterBorutoNew Generation

Carrying the legacy of a legend, when that legend is your father. Son of Naruto, the Seventh Hokage, and of Hinata, Boruto Uzumaki makes up the new Team 7 with Sarada and Mitsuki, under Konohamaru's command and the watchful eye of his mentor Sasuke. This profile runs through his arsenal — the Rasengan, then the Vanishing Rasengan, tinged with Lightning Release — and the two mysteries that set him apart: his Jogan and the Karma mark.

Son of the hero who became Hokage, he carries the legacy of a legend on his shoulders: Boruto Uzumaki is the protagonist of the new generation. Here is his profile — parents, team, techniques, and mysteries.

The Son of Naruto and Hinata

Boruto is the first child of Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage, and of Hinata Hyuga. He is born four years after the Fourth Great Ninja War and gains a sister, Himawari, two years later. Since his parents stayed close to their childhood friends, he knows the children of that whole generation from a very early age. When the duties of Hokage leave Naruto little time for his family, Boruto starts multiplying pranks across the village, with a single goal: to get his father's attention.

He shares a verbal tic with him, "dattebasa," which answers Naruto's "dattebayo" and the "(da)ttebane" of his paternal grandmother, Kushina Uzumaki. The resemblance stops there: in a 2017 interview, Masashi Kishimoto names as the biggest difference between father and son the fact that Boruto does not shout what he feels. Where Naruto grew up with no parents, no friends, and no particular talent, Boruto has a family that is present, a wide circle, and early gifts.

His parentage gives him a dual belonging. Born into the Uzumaki clan, he is also recognized, along with his sister, as a legitimate member of the Hyuga clan by direct descent from their mother, a detail that only the anime provides, in episode 154. From this dual ancestry he draws a powerful life force and very large chakra reserves on the Uzumaki side, and the potential, long purely theoretical, to one day awaken the Byakugan on the Hyuga side.

Bolt, Menma, Shinachiku: How the Character Was Made

"Boruto" (ボルト) is the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "bolt," the fastener. The name refers to Neji Hyuga, his mother's first cousin, whose name means "screw" (捻子). In its first appearance in the English-language Weekly Shonen Jump, the name was in fact transliterated "Bolt," a transliteration corrected when the chapter came out in collected volume.

The first name could have been something else entirely. Masashi Kishimoto first considered naming Naruto's son "Menma" or "Shinachiku," two names for seasoned bamboo shoots, as he explains in the Motion Comic NARUTO. Another admission from the author, collected by the site cinemacafe: he meant to give Boruto the Byakugan and forgot to do so before chapter 700 was published. The right eye ends up manifesting one, but through the Karma, not through Hyuga heredity.

The choice of mentor comes from the same offscreen space: Kishimoto confirmed in a television interview that he had entrusted that role to Sasuke Uchiha taking inspiration from the pair formed by Son Gohan and Piccolo in Akira Toriyama's work. The artwork carries a discreet signature too: Boruto's hairstyle draws a leaf, with his ahoge, the unruly strand, serving as the stem.

The New Team 7

The squad Boruto joins on leaving the Ninja Academy is officially named Team Konohamaru (木ノ葉丸班), after its leader, Konohamaru Sarutobi. It brings together Boruto, Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki. When it is formed, it is designated Team 3: in the anime (episode 38), Sarada considers requesting a transfer because she cannot get along with Boruto, then, once the dispute is settled, the three genin themselves ask for the number 7, that of their parents' team.

The team came close to being disbanded. Its three members have their genin rank taken away after intervening without authorization in Iwagakure's internal affairs; it is the Fourth Tsuchikage's personal praise that earns them reinstatement. Later, once it is established that Boruto's Karma has advanced by 80%, the team is suspended from all missions as a precaution. The Story Guide (page 62) also gives a name to the formation Sarada leads against Boro: "Reborn Team 7" (新生第七班).

Boruto is also Sasuke's private student, and Sasuke agrees to train him on a single condition: that he first master the Rasengan. After the help Kawaki provides in the rescue of the Seventh Hokage, he is made an honorary member of Team 7. Konohamaru, for his part, stands by his students' transgressions to the end: he salutes their courage after the rescue of Tento Madoka, while reminding them that a sanction is called for since they dropped their B-rank mission.

The Rasengan and the Vanishing Rasengan

Boruto learns the Rasengan from Konohamaru and masters it after a few days of relentless training: first a small sphere held between both hands, then a normal-sized ball formed with a single one. He then manages to throw it like a projectile (chapter 16, page 23), and the anime has him learn to compress it for greater power (episode 171). Once he has better mastered Momoshiki's power, he gains access to the Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan (chapter 78, page 20).

While learning the technique, he unconsciously applies to it chakra of the Lightning Release nature, a feat few prodigies pull off. Once thrown, the transformation kicks in abruptly and the sphere disappears in flight: this is the Vanishing Rasengan, created by Boruto and named by Sasuke. The versions diverge on one point, however, the novelization of Boruto: Naruto the Movie attributing the invisibility to an unconscious application of the Wind Release nature, and not Lightning Release.

The technique has its limits, and they are explicitly measured. In the anime, Kakashi Hatake judges it incomplete, the invisibility coming at the cost of a loss of offensive power (episode 168); Momoshiki, for his part, calls it too weak to inflict a fatal wound, but very painful on a vital point (chapter 54, page 26). The anime alone also has him learn the Wind Release Rasengan from Kakashi, a technique likewise left unfinished (episode 169). In various media, Boruto simply calls it "Rasengan."

His variant of the technique fits in the palm and is barely visible: that is the whole point of the Vanishing Rasengan.

The Kote at the Chunin Exam: Where the Manga and the Anime Diverge

It all starts with a misunderstanding. Boruto shows Sasuke the Rasengan he has just acquired; his mentor notes its small size, and the student wrongly concludes that he has been rejected. He then borrows the Kote from its inventor, Katasuke Tono, to instantly produce a normal-sized sphere. Sasuke notices the tool and says nothing: he accepts Boruto as a disciple all the same. It is Katasuke who will then persuade him to use the device illegally during the trials.

The Chunin Exams play out in three rounds. The first consists of a single question to be answered true or false, but the real test lies elsewhere: the teams are dropped into a pit and the actual goal is not to touch the ink at the bottom. Convinced he has failed, Boruto makes no effort to catch himself, and it is Sarada and Mitsuki who hold him back. In the second, a capture the flag, he is overwhelmed by the three Senka brothers and their clones.

What follows diverges depending on the medium. In the manga, Naruto spots the cheating during the match against Shikadai and disqualifies his son on the spot. In the anime, it goes unnoticed: Boruto reaches the final against Sarada and Shinki, and is only exposed after crushing his opponent's Iron Sand with the Purple Lightning drawn from the scientific ninja tool. The sanction then goes beyond the tournament, with Naruto also stripping him of the right to be a ninja; Boruto will later sum it up to Tento, saying that he practices it again only because he was forgiven.

The Jogan: The Pure Eye and Its Two Faces

The Jogan (淨眼, "Pure Eye") is a dojutsu that only the Otsutsuki clan knows (episode 15), and which its members describe as troublesome and strongly passed down through their bloodline (episode 65). Its depiction changes with the medium: in the manga, the eye is featureless, the pupil barely visible (chapter 1, page 5); the anime shows it light blue, with a darkened sclera and a clearly drawn pupil (episode 1).

It is the anime that stages its awakening. Boruto begins to unlock it unconsciously in his right eye at the age of seven, thanks to a prophetic dream passed on to him by Toneri Otsutsuki and to the appearance of the Nue. The eye then activates only involuntarily, in the presence of high-level threats, and stays dormant the rest of the time; at sixteen, Boruto knows how to trigger it at will.

Its capabilities are described with precision: it perceives the chakra circulatory system down to the tenketsu, tracks a target by its chakra signature, and opens portals to other dimensions (episode 14); it also makes out the invisible barriers that separate them (episode 125). In a rare quirk, the right eye, once blinded, regains its sight and its powers for the duration of the activation. After episode 15 aired, animator Chengxi Huang published a clarification — neither Byakugan nor Tenseigan, but the ocular equivalent of Naruto's perception of negative emotions — while stating himself that the information remained provisional.

Karma: 80% Otsutsukification, Then 18% Rewritten

The Karma (楔, "joining peg," romanized "Karma" in the Viz edition) is the compressed backup of an Otsutsuki's biological data, implanted in a "vessel" whose genetic makeup it gradually rewrites until it becomes a perfect Otsutsuki. If the Otsutsuki is killed, his soul migrates to that vessel and, once the mark has run its course, reincarnates there by completely supplanting the host. Momoshiki places the mark on Boruto's right palm at the end of the fight that costs him his life, and the rewriting begins from the moment of the marking (chapter 46, page 25).

The arrival of Kawaki, bearer of the Karma of Isshiki, makes the mechanism worse: the two marks resonate and speed up the takeover of both vessels. During the fight that pits him against Boruto, Isshiki tells him that his transformation is complete to about 80%, then lays out the plan: once a complete Otsutsuki, he will be fed to the Ten-Tails to ripen it into a God Tree and produce a chakra fruit of the highest quality.

The outcome reverses that program. Facing Code, Momoshiki takes control of Boruto's body; back in his senses, Boruto pushes his father out of the way and lets Kawaki run him through. Since his soul would disappear along with his vessel, Momoshiki resurrects him by overwriting the remaining 18% of data with Boruto's own (chapter 67, pages 32-38). Boruto comes out of it a complete Otsutsuki, but Momoshiki can no longer be reborn through him. What remains is a large scar with a black geometric pattern on his chest (chapter 67, page 36) and an imposed mental link: their thoughts become mutually accessible against their will (chapter 75, page 38).

Rogue Ninja: The Slashed Eye, the Accusation, Three Years Outside

Convinced that Boruto has become an Otsutsuki, Kawaki first tries to seal him, then to kill him. While protecting Sarada, Boruto takes a blow that opens his face diagonally, from eyebrow to cheek, across his upper whisker mark, with a corneal abrasion over the pupil (chapter 78, page 35). The right eye remains permanently blind. The forehead protector inherited from Sasuke now bears a matching gash, which crosses the one Naruto had made in it (chapter 79, page 1).

Right after that, Eida's Omnipotence swaps the stories of Boruto and Kawaki in the world's memory: Boruto is taken for the murderer of his own parents and has to leave the village (chapter 80, pages 22-25). Sasuke smuggles him out, then sacrifices himself a year later against Code's Claw Grime; swallowed by one of them, he ends up turned into a small tree, and Boruto takes up his sword. Taken in by Kashin Koji, whose inherited foresight, the Ten Directions, teaches in advance the techniques of possible futures, he develops the "Uzuhiko" Rasengan, which harnesses the Earth's rotation, and his own version of the Flying Thunder God (Hiraishin).

His return to Konoha earns him no leniency. The elders point out that he has already been sentenced to death for the murder of the Seventh Hokage; Ibiki Morino roughs him up in the interrogation room when he refuses to name his source; and it is Mitsuki, called in as backup, who quietly removes his restraints. Boruto leaves, stating that he still holds the village to be an ally.

The Deal Struck With Momoshiki Against the God Trees

A year after his departure, every use of the Karma had restarted Momoshiki's takeover, to the point that Boruto had stopped using it. After coming close to death against Jura, he nevertheless goes down into his own mental landscape and offers a deal to the Otsutsuki's soul: his body, on the condition that they first destroy all the human God Trees. Momoshiki accepts, knowing the offer is sincere since their thoughts are intertwined, but he also guesses the calculation behind it: Boruto is counting on Kawaki to kill them both before the deadline.

The pact opens up to him the full power of the Karma and Momoshiki's abilities. Against the God Tree Mamushi, he activates the mark to absorb a wave of flames, then destroys dozens of Divisions one after another, without the Otsutsuki having to take his place. To this are added two abilities acquired before the pact: flight, and a Flying Thunder God mastered well enough to carry him from one marker to another, including across dimensions.

The other acquisition is ocular. Boruto can now activate at will, in his right eye, the Byakugan of Momoshiki: a field of vision of nearly 360 degrees, with the exception of a blind spot at the level of the upper thoracic vertebrae, vision through solid matter and over great distances, reading of the chakra circulatory system down to the tenketsu. The eye also gives him fragmentary visions of the future, limited to what directly concerns him.

The deal: Momoshiki lends him his power, and expects his due.

What the Official Profiles Say About Him: 160 in Dexterity, 90 in Intelligence

The character profile from Boruto: Naruto Next Generations puts numbers on his abilities: 160 in dexterity, 140 in chakra, 130 in perception, 120 in strength, 90 in intelligence as well as in negotiation. Three star ratings round out the table: evasion four out of five, ninjutsu four out of five, unarmed close combat three out of five. Two novels, School Trip Bloodwind Records and The Last Day at the Ninja Academy, extend the grid: mental resistance and drug resistance four out of five, espionage, acrobatics, observation, and swimming three out of five.

Other records place him through facts rather than through scales. The Zai no Sho (page 26) credits him with an exceptional talent for ninjutsu; his abilities are ranked second in his class from his very first day at the Ninja Academy (episode 2); he is the only student to pass the written part of the graduation exam without cheating, and with a perfect score; and, at the genin exam, the Sixth Hokage credits him with a chunin level, well above the rest of his generation (episode 36).

The profile published in V-Jump for Two Blue Vortex adds the domestic color: hamburgers, fries, cola, and very spicy food at the top of his likes, shellfish at the bottom of the list, whose taste he likes but whose shelling he hates. His stated hobbies are meditation and making the accessories for his Flying Thunder God, those markers he hands out to his allies.
