CharacterEdo TenseiKabuto

Spy, medical ninja, master of a forbidden jutsu. Long confined to the role of Orochimaru's right-hand man, Kabuto Yakushi becomes one of the major architects of the Fourth Great Ninja War. Four stages shape this profile: the orphan who became a spy, Edo Tensei pushed almost to perfection, the shedding into snake Sage Mode, then Itachi's Izanami genjutsu. A path that ends in an unexpected redemption.

Spy, medical ninja prodigy and master of a terrifying forbidden jutsu: Kabuto Yakushi is one of the most devious masterminds in Naruto. Long in the shadow of Orochimaru, he becomes one of the major architects of the Fourth Great Ninja War. Here is his profile.

The Orphan Who Became a Spy

Kabuto is found as a child by Nono Yakushi on the outskirts of a town destroyed by a battle: a head wound has robbed him even of the memory of his own name. Nono treats him and takes him to the Konoha orphanage, where another resident, Urushi, puts a helmet on his head so he will not hurt himself again — hence the name Nono gives him. That night, he leaves his bed to thank her; she then discovers that he cannot read the clock because of his eyesight, and gives him her glasses (chapter 582, pages 8-17). She teaches him medical ninjutsu, in which he shows immediate talent.

The orphanage lives off the care Nono gives to wounded Konoha shinobi, with Kabuto assisting her, but it also depends on direct funding from the village. Danzo Shimura uses this: he comes and threatens to cut off that support unless Nono hands him an orphan for Root. Kabuto, who was listening to the conversation, volunteers against the wishes of Nono and Urushi. Root trains him in espionage and sends him out, for years, to gather intelligence under borrowed identities.

In Iwagakure, his activity is uncovered and a pursuer corners him; he wounds that pursuer fatally with a chakra scalpel and discovers afterward that it is Nono, herself on a mission for Root. He tries to heal her: she does not recognize his face, even when she hears his name, and dies of her wounds. Orochimaru will later explain the setup to him: Danzo had promised Nono that Kabuto would be freed in exchange for an assassination whose target was Kabuto himself, after preparing her with photos of Kabuto growing up, gradually replaced by those of someone else (chapter 584, pages 5-6). He was aiming at Root's two best spies.

In a bright room, seen from behind, a person with tied-back gray hair seated on a chair and another standing in a long black robe, facing dozens of children in white tunics lined up behind a long table.
The Konoha orphanage: this is where Kabuto is taken in and where he reveals his gift for medical ninjutsu, before Root recruits him.

A Genin Who Never Existed

Before Orochimaru, Root had already made him into several men: it sends him in turn to pose as a ninja from Kumogakure, from Kirigakure, from Sunagakure and from Iwagakure. After Nono's death, Orochimaru invites him to build with him Otogakure, then provides what he still lacks: a biography. He was supposedly taken in by Nono, captain of the Konoha Medical Corps, after the battle of Kikyo Pass, then adopted as her son (chapter 584, page 12).

This cover story is enough to make him a regular Konoha genin, a status that opens the door to the Chunin Exams held twice a year, and with them access to the participants on whom he gathers intelligence for Orochimaru. Another layer is then added: Akatsuki spots him and Sasori turns him into a sleeper agent tasked with spying on Orochimaru, through the Sand Technique - Memory Manipulation (chapter 290, page 14). This A-rank ninjutsu buries a tiny needle in the memory center: it does not erase, it seals, so that the agent sincerely believes in his own loyalty (Sha no Sho databook, page 280).

Orochimaru notices, frees him from that control, and Kabuto infiltrates Akatsuki on his behalf. By this point he has worn four borrowed nationalities, a genin identity built on a manufactured past, and a loyalty he believed was his own: none of them was his. It is this emptiness that he will sum up in front of Itachi: "My name is a sign… my glasses a tool… From the very beginning, I have never been anyone." (chapter 582, page 17).

On a suspension bridge with red cables, above a wooded valley and green mountains, a man with white hair tied back in a ponytail is seen from behind in a long hooded gray-purple cloak; facing him, a hunched figure in a black coat scattered with red clouds, its face masked, bearded and topped with horns, extended to one side by a long pale segmented tail ending in a point.

The Chunin Exams Seen Through the Infiltrator's Eyes

Kabuto enters the Exams with Yoroi Akado and Misumi Tsurugi. His tool is a set of ninja info cards (chapter 39): blank to the naked eye, marked on the back with the single kanji 忍, they release their data under the effect of chakra, even in relief — but only the one who inscribed them can read them back. It is a spy's object, not that of a helpful comrade. He approaches the Nine Rookies, warns them about how hard the exam is, then casually lets slip that he has almost nothing on the ninja of Otogakure: this provokes Dosu Kinuta, an Otogakure genin who was listening. Kabuto dodges, but the Melody Arm shatters his glasses.

In the Forest of Death, he stops Naruto from opening a scroll, guides Team 7 toward the center, and takes a blow from Oboro's team in his place. Then comes his withdrawal in the preliminaries, which he justifies in two different ways: to Naruto he claims exhaustion, to Yoroi generosity — leaving them Orochimaru's favor. The real reason lies elsewhere: he fears he will not be able to hold back in a fight and will blow his cover, and with Orochimaru sitting in the stands, he has no intelligence left to gather anyway.

Sent to abduct Sasuke, he kills the eight Anbu guarding him at the Konoha hospital and only flees through the window when Kakashi Hatake arrives — the manga notes his abilities as comparable to Kakashi's (chapter 88, page 12) and has him say that at least ten guards would have been needed (chapter 89, page 2). That same night, he meets Baki to prepare the invasion and offers to eliminate Hayate Gekko, whom Baki kills himself. A month later, with Gaara unable to give the signal, it is Kabuto who triggers the invasion by putting the stadium to sleep with the Temple of Nirvana Technique (chapter 114, pages 15-17).

The Chakra Scalpel: Medicine Turned Into a Weapon

Kabuto uses the chakra scalpel far beyond surgery: to cut through a defense, or to extend his blows by severing muscles on contact. He has even managed to sever the chakra circulatory system, preventing a jinchuriki from receiving the chakra of his Tailed Beast (chapter 168, page 9). He also invented the In'yu Shometsu (陰癒傷滅) to keep his test subjects alive longer; he applies it to himself as well: he reads the opponent's expression, movements and the nature of the jutsu, guesses where the blow will land, gathers his chakra there and begins healing before the impact.

The duel against Tsunade illustrates all of it. With Orochimaru's arms sealed, it is Kabuto who fights: he blocks the needle of Shizune, stays out of reach, strikes only to disable, then cuts open his own wrists to paralyze her through her fear of blood. Naruto hits him with the Rasengan but collapses: Kabuto has severed his heart muscles and boasts that nothing can save him — Tsunade saves him. His In'yu Shometsu is not enough: the Rasengan deals more damage than he has chakra to repair (chapter 168). Tsunade judges his ease with ninjutsu and his quickness to be greater than her own at her peak (chapter 164, page 12).

The databook adds that the technique demands stamina that he alone possesses (To no Sho databook, page 201). The rest of the kit follows: the Mystical Palm at a slight distance (chapter 296, pages 12-13), painkillers, performance-boosting hormones (chapter 311, page 16), poisons calibrated against a specific target and truth serums (chapter 515, pages 10-11), and a taste for corpses, stored in scrolls, reanimated as decoys and retouched to be indistinguishable from the real thing. The anime adds an offshoot: Tsunade derives a related technique from it, which raises the survival odds of Rock Lee's spinal operation from 50% to 58% (episode 100).

In a green meadow dotted with rocks, a young man with gray hair and round glasses, wearing a forehead protector whose plate is engraved with a musical note and a dark high-collared top with white sleeves, holds both arms out in front of him, palms forward; his hands and forearms are wrapped in a sheet of blue light.
Kabuto activates his chakra scalpel: the surgeon's instrument serves him to cut through a defense and to sever muscles on contact.

The Catalog Body: What Kabuto Took From Each of Them

The first graft is that of Orochimaru's remains, which earns him the White Snake Power and a true reptilian form: an elongated body, short limbs, a stretched face, and a maw wide enough to swallow a target and capture it (chapter 514, pages 11-12). His human appearance is no more than a shell he sheds at will, with a snake lodged in his navel that can merge with another body to heal it (chapter 667, pages 2-4). His successive alterations also give him a different chakra signature, and he produces detachable white snakes that carry it and mislead sensors (chapter 579).

The rest comes from his research on Orochimaru's test subjects. He reproduces the Hydrification Technique of Suigetsu Hozuki to liquefy himself and slip out of a Susanoo, the Uzumaki regeneration of Karin to close his wounds, the kekkei genkai of Jugo to passively absorb natural energy, and Jirobo's DNA for the Earth Shore Return. Sasuke, who had Suigetsu and Karin on his team, recognizes their abilities and asks whether Jugo's are there too: Kabuto confirms it.

The centerpiece is called Den'ien'ei (伝異遠影), "Strange Transmission of the Distant Shadow," whose pronunciation distorts dīenuē, "DNA" (fourth databook, page 272). Through Sakon's kekkei genkai, a bust-shaped clone springs from the snake in his navel and performs the techniques of anyone whose cells he carries, kekkei genkai and Hiden included, while Kabuto keeps fighting. The clone transforms on the fly and combines talents: a Tayuya clone plays her genjutsu on a bone flute carved by a clone of Kimimaro, both of them from Orochimaru's elite guard (chapter 585).

In a dark forest, a young man with light gray hair, a wide grin baring his teeth, wears a high-collared gray-purple cloak; one of his arms, entirely covered in large white honeycomb-patterned scales, reaches toward the camera, its long-fingered hand open, while a patch of white scales covers one of his cheeks and the eye on that side is yellow with a slit pupil, rimmed with a purple line.

From Snake to Dragon: Sage Mode

After integrating part of Orochimaru's remains, from which he draws larger chakra reserves, Kabuto learns senjutsu from the White Snake Sage, in the Ryuchi Cave. The ability borrowed from Jugo lets him gather natural energy even while moving: he can therefore hold Sage Mode indefinitely, a state Orochimaru never mastered. The visible marks of the transformation are minor: lines around the eyes, four horns at the back of the skull, and a brille.

This brille — the transparent scale that covers a snake's eye — gives him immunity to genjutsu and to visual attacks (chapter 580, pages 2-4): a decisive detail, since it is the brille that Itachi will have to reopen in order to force him to release Edo Tensei. Sage Mode also strengthens his jutsu and his blows (chapter 585, pages 16-17), his defense (chapter 581, page 16), his speed and his reflexes (chapter 579, page 16), and gives him sensory perception (chapter 580, page 8).

He finally gains from it the Sage Art - Inorganic Reincarnation, which breathes natural energy into inert matter: this is how he animates the rock of his cave to try to crush Itachi and Sasuke. The words are his own: "I am no longer a snake… the power of the sage has let me shed my skin… I am a dragon now!!" (chapter 579, page 19). Snakes and dragons are in fact interchangeable in several mythologies, as in the case of Yamata-no-Orochi.

Snake Sage Mode gives him four horns and reptilian features: this is where his phrase, "from snake to dragon," comes from.

The Master of Edo Tensei

Edo Tensei, the reanimation of souls, was created by Tobirama Senju and then developed by Orochimaru. Kabuto claims to have perfected it, and the detail is precise: he reanimates dozens of individuals at once, which Tobirama could not do (chapter 521, page 5), and brings them back at the power they had when alive, which Orochimaru could not do (chapter 546, page 15). On the body of Madara Uchiha, he pushes the alteration as far as restoring his youth and grafting on the Rinnegan and Wood Release (Mokuton) (chapter 560, page 3).

The technique is not free of cost, however: for the demonstration Tobi demands, Kabuto reanimates Torune Aburame by sacrificing Fu Yamanaka. He usually leaves his reanimated their personalities, both because they are more effective that way and because their return shakes those who knew them alive; controlling them tightly, by contrast, demands a great deal of effort from him. By siphoning the chakra of Orochimaru's curse marks, he can suppress those personalities remotely and reduce his dead to machines (chapter 522, pages 9-10).

Blackmailing Tobi and the Command Post

At the Mountains' Graveyard, Tobi recognizes Kabuto as Sasori's former spy and wants to kill him for his betrayal. Kabuto answers by resurrecting five dead Akatsuki members and offers his army for the coming war. The price he asks: Sasuke. Tobi hesitates; Kabuto then summons the real Madara Uchiha, and the deal is struck — Tobi obtaining only that the delivery be postponed until after the victory.

He then trades the capture of Naruto and Killer Bee for a tour of the White Zetsu army: he is also shown the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path (Gedo Mazo) and the Hashirama biomass from which the Zetsu are grown. On Turtle Island, tied up by Kurotsuchi and about to be probed by Aoba Yamashiro, he sheds his skin, escapes and abducts Yamato instead of his targets: his Wood Release, he pleads before a furious Tobi, will strengthen the Zetsu army. Finally he captures Anko Mitarashi, drawn to the Graveyard by a trail of corpses, and refuses Tobi's demand to kill her: her Heaven Curse Mark serves him as a chakra tap.

On the battlefield, he crushes the personalities only where he wants to hurt: against the Third Division, to which he then sends all of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Elsewhere the results are uneven — Hanzo deliberately lets himself be captured without Kabuto retaking his mind in time, Itachi frees himself from his control through Kotoamatsukami. The calculation pays off either way: the Allied Shinobi Forces' losses served his stated goal, his victories his underlying one, weakening Akatsuki.

Redemption Through Itachi

His downfall comes from Itachi, and the trap is a loop. Kabuto snatches Sasuke's sword and runs Itachi through with it; Itachi takes it back from him and cuts off the tip of one of his horns. The exchange starts over, the horn growing back each time around: this is Izanami, a genjutsu that works through shared physical sensations between the victim and its caster, not through sight; the brille does not protect him from it. While he is locked inside his own mind, Itachi opens his brille and forces him to release Edo Tensei.

What follows is immediate and inglorious: Sasuke resurrects Orochimaru from a sample of Kabuto's flesh, Orochimaru reabsorbs his own chakra from Kabuto's body, then the two of them leave him where he lies. The way out of the loop only comes afterward: Izanami releases only the one who becomes humble and stops trying to bend events. Kabuto then accepts the person he has always been, and it is on his own initiative that he joins the last battlefield to heal Sasuke's mortal wounds — a debt repaid to Itachi, who gave him back his identity.

The postwar is gentler than his record would have suggested: Kabuto is not imprisoned and becomes the director of the Konoha orphanage. The anime qualifies this (Shippuden 485): there Orochimaru tells Sasuke that none of the three is truly free and that they were probably spared only because the village sees them as tools it could call back. Finally, in Naruto Gaiden, Naruto entrusts him with the clones of Shin Uchiha, and Kabuto decides that the priority is to give each of them a name of his own.

Itachi's crows: at the end of this duel, Izanami locks Kabuto into a loop from which one frees oneself only by accepting who one is.

"A Thousand Changes, Ten Thousand Transformations": The Name and the Databook Entry

A kabuto is the samurai's helmet. With his teammates Yoroi ("armor") and Tsurugi ("sword"), the genin team therefore forms an armor-helmet-sword trio. "Kabuto" is also the ending of the Japanese name for aconite, a plant that can soothe pain or kill — a notable consistency in a medical ninja who uses his pharmacopoeia in combat. As for Yakushi (薬師), it is the short form of Yakushi nyorai, the Buddha of medicine: "master of remedies."

The databook completes the profile. His favorite motto is senpen banka (千変万化), "a thousand changes, ten thousand transformations," a proverb that denotes a countless number of metamorphoses, an endless variety. His hobby is maintaining his scalpels; the opponents he wishes to face are Naruto and Orochimaru; his favorite dishes are two salt-grilled fish, horse mackerel and sea bream, and he hates raw meat.

That leaves the figure that is a profile in itself: his Konoha record shows 191 official missions — 163 D-rank, 28 C-rank, none of B, A or S rank. The file matches what he says about himself, an introvert who does not like being looked at and prefers to stay in the background (chapter 579). A curiosity of the entry: the fourth databook (Jin no Sho) lists neither Hiden, nor kekkei genkai, nor summoning among his special traits, even though he uses all three. Studio Pierrot's settei sheets put him at 120 cm when Nono finds him, and at 150 cm when he leaves for Root.

Kabuto's genin team, with Yoroi Akado and Misumi Tsurugi: "armor," "helmet" and "sword" brought together in a single trio.
